  2. happy thanksgiving to all!
  3. yes, this summer I was able to add more Scottish munros and Bens to the list :)

  4. I was at work, and a co-worker who heard the news on his way to work told us about a plane crash. We got more info from Internet - Yahoo news as it unfold. As we had visited NY only a few days prior to 9/11 and have beautiful memories and pictures, it was particularly difficult to explain to our young one later that day. We have had a chance to visit NY and ground zero numerous times since but still it is sad around this time plus now the TV keeps showing the images all the time again least you forget. I cannot begin to imagine how the folks who were directly affected is able to cope but god bless them to rise above this sadness.
  5. My kid gave me this news. Some sad news indeed. It is strange how you really don't know someone but you are still move to huge sadness.
  6. I have never had trouble with kids "brawling" in restaurants. There are choices of restaurants to choose if you are desirous of polite cultured kids...at a price. Having said that isn't it discriminatory for a restaurant that provides service to the public to size up a group of people of a certain age and put rules of "No Kids" condition because they are loud and boisterous whereas adults can also be boisterous, brawling (as in fights)and grabbing things. What I meant is that because kids might disturb other patrons is not a good reason and justification to ban kids as the rule ultimately also affect others. In this instance the rule is set to dissuades families (adult) from accessing a service which seems like the intent of the restaurant. I understand children running around however a more justifiable rule can be "every one remain seated while being served" OR Some restaurants have kids Tuesdays which encourages families to use the service those sort of solutions seem to me to be more "bona fide" reasons for restaurants "policies" otherwise find another business
  7. This is too funny!! an unexpected rock
  8. I can confess I am not a fanatic. I am usually outside the concert halls and too many of times waiting for our young kid. It is strange she picks upcoming groups that she is musically attracted to and call raw talent and memorable. For example I was outside of Panic at the Disco, Metric, Matt Dusk and a host of unknowns cost $15 who eventually made big. I don't think she attended a notable, well except for Usher, because of the lip synchronizing and electronic voice. For example a talented singer such as Christina Aguilera or Brittany Spears do not need an electronic voice. I am mostly into theatre and try to get to the shows where ever I am in the world.
  9. my kid first election to vote is uninterested in politics however said that Iggy was the only one who said "vote for me" and he gave the date whatever that means I quite liked the Gilles Duceppe, Layton reminds me of the sales man, very slick.
  10. I don't think Trump is in it to win, he is too business savvy - another 20 years puts him in his 80's, then my friends is the right time - like changing priorities, like nothing else to do? - let's do the president thingy
  11. The space looks like desperate times. In that case we have to survive - the call is desperate measures. One good thing, we might all shape up and become right size to match our space - effect: less burden on the health care system. personally I couldn't live in this small space if there are options.
  12. NASA have to look towards the corporate sector for sustainability instead of relying completely on government funding. Hopefully, few more Einstein geniuses would emerge to help keep the funding afloat. Otherwise NASA would really have to come up with strategies such as "deception point"
  13. Since the culture hinges on individualism and promotion of capitalism I don't see why a person should not go to where they can boldly plunged in an increase in wealth. How do you think the some folks got exploited, there exist opportunities and a mercenary. For example, now that I am much older and wiser I have my eyes set in down under. Obviously, it is in my best interest to integrate and assimilate and become as Australian as I can and as soon as possible. - when I am done with my feat, I would return with my good fortune - at that time I would feign my dismay upon discovery I am not in good Canadian standing Albeit in these times I ponder of Christopher Columbus, if I didn't know better I would have made reference to Isabella and call him Spanish. so un-Canadian would allude to the normal reference of being American - nothing wrong with this, when things crumbles that's what happens. The conservatives have an ad that shows about crumbles. We return to America. Notes so that I am coherent so some folks - Columbus is Italian - In my experience traveling we are identified as American until corrected - The "I am Canadian" bit as in the commercial is loaded with non-Canadian sentiments or anti-Americanism Negative Ad
  14. I do believe that the colour of the skin influences the hire. However, I also believe that there has been significant effort by employers to make opportunities become available to minorities. What I meant is if you are good, have potential, then you get hired. Employers have changed their recruitment practices in finding the right candidate for the job. Minorities including (Canadian born) who eventually make to higher jobs are 2-3 folds more "Canadian" educated (minorities coming from abroad with their so called inferior education usually head off to be reeducated in order to fit and meet the requirements of the hiring companies)...have to work harder to please, and even then they are missing the certain "je ne sais quoi" to tip to the next level. Now I think it has to do with the minority assimilation of culture, growing up within their community and lack of networking within within the economic group albeit other reasons one being the ingredients of how they (the minorities) can become successful using that which they cannot change i.e. color. The accents are not touched on but the desirability for speaking fluent English or French will shut a good percentage out of the hiring process and if I had to make a guess I would even make a claim of over 60% would not be hired for higher opportunities. And it has nothing to do with pulling names out of the hat because the employer have the numbers to choose, luck et al - they are just not meeting the requirements.
  15. I am not sure how you come to the conclusion that 'tis the end for Japan. Compare to the economies of the world Japan is 3rd, US is 14 trillion in debt, Japan 7 You can't compare japan economies to Greece and Jamaica Japan economy is slightly below China valued - however china is still a developing economy US and Japan are more mature economies The yen didn't take a plunge, nor the US dollar didn't sky rocket as buyers move from the Yen to US$ - didn't happen Japan will be a "OK"
  16. Hello Dancer Well, I can see that I can take you seriously now. You are correct in the your analysis. However it is the large cap companies that give the opening to diversity inclusive of women and for other companies to follow. Deloitte, Home Depot were faced with class action lawsuits by women and are examples of changes to include women. Their recruiting practices have changed, and the promotion strategy have change. It includes mentoring just to mention one good among many. As a woman accessing higher opportunity Deloitte would be the very top of my list. Citigroup’s Smith Barney, Merrill Lynch, and Morgan Stanley denied systemic discrimination against women, however paid millions to settle. I suggest other financial institution follow similar culture of denial. Women are sold short even with the MBA, even when performance should be as objective - there is an actual person with embedded unconscious who can be subjective on the take of the issue of performance and portrayed objective - with expected results. I see the cutting teeth, and I remain optimistic. Thanks for the reply.
  17. Well, not much has changed from 10 years – slow crawl for women Below find very recent up to date information – echo from the journal of 10 years ago CBC News March 3, 2011. Executive gender gap remains. Growth in the number of women who advance to the executive ranks at Canada's largest companies has slowed to a crawl in the past two years, a major study has found. Executive gender gap remains. Why the executive suite is the final frontier for women - “I was so fed up being told there were no capable women. I had to stand up and tell them that I thought they were stupid,” Ms. Yaffe, chief operating officer of Alliance Atlantis Communications Why the executive suite is the final frontier for women Representation of women in the Canadian and U.S. work forces Representation of women in the Canadian and U.S. work forces
  18. Women still are not earning equal pay for same job as their male counterparts. I will try to explain a reason why some folks say a man and woman are accessing equal job and there seem to be no gap in pay. Say a man and woman applies for the same job, they have the same talent, and competencies. However there is a "sexist" boss hiring and prefers the male. There is probably no stats on this but women also prefer to hire the male, because they are plugged into the boy's network. The only way the woman can counter offer hiring over the male is to negotiate a lower pay. The "sexist" hiring boss hires the women because he saves 30% on someone who can do the same job, a reason why women are found in high positions with lower salary. The hiring women hires the male for actual or more than their worth. http://www.statcan.gc.ca/pub/11f0019m/11f0019m2001157-eng.pdf shows men still have a wage advantage over women.
  19. 53:43 ratio, WTH I had a good chuckle at this one - saying things fast you haven't thought of as yet. Don't write with those ipad thingy if you don't see too well either....so short reply
  20. The feminist movement has come a long way from making women being able to vote to defining women as a person so that they can own property, opening doors for education and employment so YES very big progress for women. There are also many backlash that comes with trying to gain equality - look at a corporate woman at the top of her game adopts characteristics of the 90% nice successful gentlemen always at top. Women still are not earning equal pay for same job as their male counterparts. In the political arena even though the population is 53:43 women:men there is sever under-representation of women in politics, the solution injection of quotas for Canada. If we take a look at the Sweden politics representation women is 50:50 balance - and their social systems you can see a true representation of women involvement in policy changes - a very social system. So from this end, women are not represented in policy making and therefore cannot table things that are affecting their interest e.g. abortion - how about a bunch of old male judges, and politicians help decide what constitute whether women actually own their bodies. Well women also are under-represented in court system. If there is one thing that should be accomplished from the feminist movement is "LIBERATION" from men, their power and their practice whether intentional of putting women into roles. Women should be the ones with those unearned privileges.
  21. I haven't been around here much lately - but someone like Black Dog I think would encourage much participation and fruitful discussion regardless of a point of view
  22. Look at it this way - we see people getting richer, we see poverty, we see a lot of poor miserable people - but we live in a capitalistic society that allows us exploit resources and become greedy. You want me to change my views that greed does not exist? That some people not going to be demise in order for others to move ahead, in order for others to become rich. Some win others have to lose, well not completely - they just get the short end of the stick. People have inherently been greedy, and have greedy ways, oh don't worry not you, but everyone else is greedy. Give me an example of a country that was not greedy, Russia perhaps, US, UK, Spain, France, Iraq, how about Canada? but .... How does a person become richer? or the topic of conversation the rich getting richer. Well people are individualistic and looking out for themselves and so they set off to pursue their interest to benefit themselves. What I can say to you is thatthere is NO other systems available to look at where you can get rid of poverty, or lets call it by its name "poor people". Hoever, poor people in Canada and the US are much better off because they are exploited where capitalism flourishes, business and trading are advancing, and the order of things is for rich who is always greedy, getting richer. In this case, you would be surprised to note that the poor people have just escaped being desperately poor albeit visions of poor famished people. In an extreme senario send all the rich folks to another planet for one week, see what they accomplish in their new environments - and see what really happens to poor people left behind.
  23. What? this sudden outpouring of righteousness is so hypocritical. The poor is depleting the system more. Here is my simple scenario, let me know who you would wish to support - on the backs of the middleclass: - an executive who lay a foundation, toiled, sweat, risk much but also has the smarts to paved the way to the top, as the article points out is now deemed rich. - the poor who has plenty of opportunities not to become homeless, weighing on luck, think the rich owe them something for the injustices of being poor, sit around the corner with outstretched arm accessing your hard earn dollars that you keep giving. Imagine an entire poor family putting both arms out for your alms.
  24. I don't get it, the rich will have to take from someone in order to get rich and the middleclass hardworking people striving to get to the top seem like the only exploit.
