We definatly need to move our justice system more along the lines of US justice, we need to punish hardened criminals. Right now Canadian justice is a joke along the lines of this: A pedofile is let out after serving his term and the cops say there is a high chance of him re offending, what the hell, if so than lock him away! You don't see that kind of thing happaning in the US. We really should change. Couldn't disagree more, US has highest incarceration rate, and its doing absolutley nothing to curb crime. It's like the death penalty, its used as symbol so that the general public is like "phew! look at all those baddies behind bars getting punished!" After all my Crim studies, we need to maintain our current approach of rehabilitation first. There are always unfixable cases, but until we put in adequate funding , we are just locking people away, and not doing any good for society, because they will get out. US crime rates are down substancially since the early nineties US Crime Statistics And so are ours. http://www.cbc.ca/story/canada/national/20...tats050721.html I'm sure you will all scream bloody murder at the homicide rate. But people don't think about how long they are going to spend in jail when they kill someone. It's just not a deterrent. That homicide rate is greatly coming from urban areas like Winnipeg and Toronto, where we have to deal with the problem of guns. Just because I'm not in favour of a "US style" utilitarian mandatory sentence system, doesnt mean I don't think there is a problem that needs to be addressed in a more serious manner. Do you want the Criminal Justice system to be fair or equal. You can't have both.

I think that's the dumbest thing I ever heard. Stop telling people who they should be allowed to vote for. If they want to vote for the Marxist-Leninist Party, they damn well have the right to, if they want to vote for the CPC , they have the right to. This is Canada, not the US. Two party systems are fricking awful. Never bring forth that idea again.

I like it. But prepare for liberal flaming. Even better--ban all violent criminals from the country. You get caught, you get banished--for life. Leave jails for those that may be able to be rehabilitated. We'd have to include a 3 strikes plan for all others so if they get caught 3 times they're gone. Hyuk Hyuk! Yah, let's shoot 'em out into space! Where the heck else we gonna "banish" them to? California? Iran? Cuba? Russia? Timbukfreakintwo? WHERE? Knee jerk reaction -- send all violent criminals out of the country; then they'll be someone else's problem. You know what?! I really don't care where they go. They obviously cannot function within the rules of our society so they ought not be allowed to be a part of it. Sure, I'll give you that criminals need to have their rights respected during the criminal proceedings, but during the sentencing the interests of the victim, probability of the criminal comitting a subsequent offense on release and the safety risk that the criminal poses to society in general need to be the focus. You telling me you've never broken the law? Lets ship out all the jaywalkers too.

I totally agree with him, I'm an Criminologist as well, and prisons have been shown not to provide any tangible deterrence for crime, they act more as reassurance for the general public. As for building more prisons.. that is definetly not the answer.. in the US, part of the problem, (along with their sentencing..) is that they are trapped in an economic cycle. They have so many prisons, that employ so many people, and create more jobs in prison technology development and support staff to go along with the correctional staff, that if they shut down some prisons, they would take a major economic hit. And yes , I am aware that it costs tens of thousands of dollars to house a prisoner, but I'm talking in terms of employmeny rate and economics in that fashion.

I didn't say the pet projects were scary, I was saying the amount of money they would rape us for is scary. Socialism is obsolete, the United States didn't become the most powerful and innovated nation in the world because they micro-managed the economy. Your right.. China and Japan are now about to take the most powerful and innovative nations titles and run with them.

My Goodness, the world hasn't come to an end!

Ah, Americans in like Mississippi use the term like it is dirty, not your average American... Have to disagree with you there, my friend. Liberal is a dirty word in the US--thanks to the socialists corrupting the word. The modern Democrat Party (after JFK) is not classical liberal, it is socialist. Indeed, the Bush administration is more resemblant of classical liberalism. I think they should learn to learn, before they start throwing out words that they have no comprehension of as insults. -
Religion......what team do you support?
uOttawaMan replied to JMH's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
Oh, not to mention the violence when they go rampaging and vandalising after a terrible loss! They've even indoctrinated their kids into this cult! Dads doing the religious training on their brats on every streets all over the city. I'm sick and tired of the bouncing ball repeatedly pounding the pavement outside my house. I looked out and observed this young boy just tossing and bouncing his ball.... non-stop...as if mesmerized...toss up and down, bounce, catch, toss up etc.,, I'd swear he was in a trance! Oh, they have their own "idols" alright. One of them is called "The Great One". He's practicing "exercise" its a founding principle of the cult of "Live Longer". -
As happy as I would be to see those poll numbers more regularly, CPC gov't with NDP opposition size support, I honestly think that those numbers are reflecting leadership at the moment. The Conservative's and NDP continue on with their known and respected leaders, while the Liberals are in limbo. So people are like.. hmm.. since my Liberal party is mangled.. honestly who would I vote for at the moment? And then you see the left leaning Liberal population say they'd vote for the NDP. I agree with earlier posts though sadly... once the Liberals get straightened out.. the NDP will fade into the backround again by next election.

Is it a fair statement to say that the NDP are socialists, and left wing? Is that not close to Communism?? Did they not at one point suggest "Free for all governement where there are no rich or poor" (jack layton speech from 2004) Don't critisize me because I am starting a debate. 6 people have voted with me saying that they would, or possibly would push for communism. Speak up fellow supporters!! Have your voices heard. Did you ever consider the fact they might be doing it to goad you on? It's an online annoynomous poll... who gives a flying &$*#. The NDP is moving more towards the centre all the time, simply because that's the type of party that gets elected in Canada. (see: Party, Liberal; and more recently : Party of Canada, Conservative.) LoL and tml, my lil "left'wing utopia is starting to become severely confused, because I kinda hold opposing values. Such as this little blurb. "Genetic researchers have been expelled, all recreational drugs are legal, military spending is on the increase, and organ donation is compulsory." SO bascially.. my government says cloning is wrong, drugs are ok, we need a solid army, and health care is a top priority . 7 million people and a developing economy! w00t im 2nd World!

Good to know who we can trust on economic opinions! What course is it? I think we have similiar naming/numbering structures between BC and AB. Hey every ones got an opinion...but yeah the course was Money and Banking I really don't know what the hell I was thinking, every one in that class is a business or accounting major and I am History Major so I think I am a little out of place, it certainly is harder than macro and micro. Really, I've got Money and Banking in spring. I've taken some other 300's though already, International Trade and the such. I found money and banking one of the easiest parts of macro, so I'm hoping it plays to my strong points. I'm a finance/econ major, thats probably why! Don't stick me in a history class though. I think I'd do better in history than economics... I'm in a European History 15th-20th Century class at the moment... eeek. Jk its good fun. lots of info, but hella interesting.

Hey just a tip for those with more time on their hands, if you go to settings, you can set it so you get two issues a day to deal with instead of one. So you can control your country faster.

Conservative Govt.
uOttawaMan replied to The Honest Politician's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
You don't have to be Trudeau, wearing ridiculous costumes and doing dumb things to be a leader. I know you weren't specifically referencing Trdeau, but much of the time when people are complaining about Harper, that is who they dig up from the past, and speak of "charisma", more specifically Harper's lack thereof. If Layton has taught us anything its that leadership requires more then a personality. In terms of what Harper has engineered, its difficult not to give him credit for the amalgamation of the Tories. Don't get me wrong, Harper is not the person that embodies every attribute you would want in a leader, but he has accomplished something, which means he obviously has some qualifications for leadership. Or he stumbled his way into a can't lose scenario and just ran a near perfect campaign ( which i applaud) and now is drunk on power and is eating all of our cookies. -
hahaha.. my country is listed as: "Scandinavian Liberal Paradise"

Actually this is alot of fun! MY country is the Empire of the CanadianIrishmen, and my currency is the Keg. "The Empire of CanadianIrishmen is a tiny, socially progressive nation, remarkable for its complete lack of prisons. Its compassionate, intelligent population of 5 million enjoy extensive civil rights and enjoy a level of social equality free from the usual accompanying government corruption. The government -- a sprawling, bureaucracy-choked, socially-minded morass -- devotes most of its attentions to Social Welfare, with areas such as Law & Order and Defence receiving almost no funds by comparison. The average income tax rate is 41%, but much higher for the wealthy. A tiny private sector is dominated by the Gambling industry. Crime -- especially youth-related -- is relatively low. CanadianIrishmen's national animal is the polar bear, which frolics freely in the nation's many lush forests, and its currency is the keg."
