I think you're right. We should start by not calling Sikhs "goat herding terrorists." No? I never said that. But if I want to express my amusement at religious fanatics who dress in costumes and run around with swords I feel free to do so. I'm sorry, but the only thing i can do here , is "lol" at the ignorance.

If he did, it was probably for his own benefit in my opinion, to get his shot at leadership when the party was destroyed and weak.

The best part about these forums, is that everything breaks down into "shut up you left wing hoser" and "you right wing nut job, learn to have a heart kthnx". Well that's my synopsis anyway. As long as the forum doesn't degenerate into reply's of : "lol" I think we are still in the clear.

You all should read this post again. Why? There is nothing in it. I'm sick of being told I sound like Bush/Cheney. I just have the common sense to know that a debate will accomplish nothing and that the vote will be favourable. And what if the vote isn't favourable? The world will put us about last on the list of semi-respected countries, most of them don't even listen ot us anymore because we've been marked irrelevant because of this behaviour. Afghanistan is in our best interest and the best interests of the world. I'd hate to see progress destroyed by a left-wing coalition in our government, set on isolating us from the world, of course, until Osama follows through on his commitments to attack us. We aren't there for corporate gains like the Americans, we aren't there because of some 20 year old political doctrine. We are there to help Afghani's and perserve our national defense. While I appreciate your use of fear mongering in regards to Osama attacking Canada; in truth, we can do nothing to prevent such an attack from occuring if someone wanted it to occur. Not even by playing superhero and removing all the poverty in the world. Last time I checked that's what the US has always prided itself on doing, playing superhero. Maybe isolationsim is the way to go.. yes.. I just find myself hopelessly cynical. sigh.

Potential Liberal leadership candidates test support
uOttawaMan replied to stignasty's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
Belinda leading the Liberals would be the best thing possible for the Tories and NDP. Of course it would, she's Paul Martin in a cocktail dress. Ya right TML.. I think you need glasses. She clearly doesn't have jowels. -
Where do we draw the "tolerance line"?
uOttawaMan replied to JerrySeinfeld's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
Or privatization of health care...free trade with the US, signing the missile defense deal...global warming...you name it! HAHA - lefties LOVE the slippery slope - they've based most of their opinions on it. Problem is, history keeps proving them wrong. Isn't that in itself a slippery slope? -
I am constantly amazed at how many "righties" get their news from Fox. I get my news from Al-Jazeera

I guess if you think unbridled cynicism is a way with words, then yes, I guess she can.

If a gay gets attacked by muslims in canada, somehow the blame will end up squarely on Christians' laps. Something to do with that whole turn the other cheek deal. Unless of course they are discussing gays, then they'd rather not hear anything about cheeks. At any rate, for lack of a better term in this thread, I think flame on applies. -
Abolish Senate, McGuinty suggests
uOttawaMan replied to stignasty's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
I don't agree with his reasons, but I agree with the idea. Would avoid the whole nasty situation having elected members in the Senate, which I still think is going to cause some major problems down the road in terms of where the true legislative power will lie. -
David Suzuki is the man.

Cuba's wonderful. No need for these types of debates only one party haha So true.

The Liberals have lost it
uOttawaMan replied to Montgomery Burns's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
All I can say here is racism for the loss. God forbid a foreign interest invests in our country. Tell you what, I'll take your stance seriously when you start a movement to get all Canadian companies to withdraw their investments in overseas ventures, and completely cripple our economy by become totally isolationist. -
Todd Bertuzzi was the best player for Canada in the first two games of the tournament. After that, he started to slip. But if you want to talk about taking penalties.. look at Chris Pronger.. the man took an unbelievable amount of penalties, as well as giving the puck away again and again. Certainly did alot more damage than Todd. The rest i agree with you .

Tell that to the people on the rooftops in New Orleans. I really don't know how to interpret what you are saying. Are you saying tell that to them, because there government is so big and strong , yet they didn't rescue trapped people fast enough? Or are you saying that those people would prefer to have a bigger government so they could have been helped faster? Or are you saying that those people would be like "we are super strong, screw that quote"? Clarify plz.

Wow! Mapleleafwebs very own sect of right-wing extremists That be me! Personally I'd like the NDP to stick around. Jack's ideas and "I GET RESULTS!! PPPPLEEASE VOTE FOR ME!!" give me some great comic relief. Plus if I ever start a car dealership, I know who to hire. Who would you hire? Certainly not Jack Layton. Maybe Paul Martin or Stephen Harper. Since one of your favourite insults is against the NDP's fiscal management capabilities, why would you want him in a profit driven buisness like a car dealership? Oh well.. I'm sure you have your reasons for wanting to work with Jack.

What about the Jews? Also the Hindu's look to be covering the spread.

I wish, I pay a whopping amount of taxes as a student, so much it has threatened my continuing in university. Full-time students should pay no tax. Yes, no tax! I would agree with the pay no tax sentiments, generally speaking however most university students pay very little in taxes after it is all said and done. Thats probably because most of them are discouraged from actually working during university. It's a hard bargin when you get no additional money over your tution and living expenses after taxes! I get all my income tax back.

Sounds like my story, except that I have joined the blue tide. I am even currently thinking about the law enforcement path too, just I don't think I'll ever get into the areas I'd like so I'm probably scapping that plan (how many people can they possibly have in economic crime??), wouldn't want to be stuck as a street cop forever... You'll be a conservative soon enough moving out here and being a police officer (RCMP I'm assuming?)... I'm from a middle class Roman Catholic family as well but I live in a red Liberal riding (people on Montreal's West Island may have heard of the CPC but all I know is that they won't vote Conservative...EVER... ) It would seem to me if you were a cop you'd have more conservative views on defence and crime. I'm not saying you'll become real right-wing like many CPCers...just that you'll become a bit less socialist. I knew a few people who were cops and pretty moderate with their politics. Yet they got pissed off after seeing the same easy sentences from left-wing judges who they argued were pampered and elitist and never EVER on the street dealing with crime. They said, "we deal with these people screwing around with drugs, muggings, vandalism every week and the judge releases them ASAP... next night they're out screwing around again...it's bull." Neither the Libs nor the NDP is tough on crime. I think you may soon embrace CPC elements (I was still pretty leftist when I was in university... ) I know what you are saying, and to be perfectly honest, you are probably right. The only thing that bothers me, is this politcal "lets get tough on crime" line. What does that even mean?!! How you can you get tough on a problem that is inherently tougher than the laws designed to address it?! What they are really saying, is : Lets get more police officers, and lets give judges stricter sentencing guidelines, and make more severe re-offending sentences. What that amounts to is a more severe justice system , not a "tougher" one. Lol.. its a pet peeve.. what i can say.. lol

I second the motion. TML for PM ! Actually, I think it would be better to establish a compassionate dictatorship under TML. Cut out the middle men/women. All this attention I'm getting...I must admit I'm honoured... My dictatorship will be more benevolent than Chretien's, I PROMISE... Can I be the Chuck Guite to your Chretien?! PLeease. I swear, none of those envelopes will be a problem. I've devised a more effiecient way of carrying cash... hehe.. hollowed out teddy bears. Its genius.

From what I understand, this has only been a sport since 1998 and there are only two countries with competitive teams: Canada and the US. What other countries field teams? Sweden, Finland, Germany, Russia, Italy and Switzerland?Everything I dislike about the Olympics is contained in these facts. I see no reason that any of our tax money should be used in any way to support these kinds of sports. It is fraudulent if these players appeal to "national pride" to justify a government subsidy. Did you not notice they played Sweden.. not the US in the finals.. and the game was 4-1, not a blowout.. Maybe you should check your stats before you start whining about government funding. Or better yet, try to compete against those women. They would ruin you six ways from Sunday.

We did it, we did it and when the Flag went up I actually heard real Canadians singing our anthem. How wonderful after being told by Americans that the reason we didn't sing it was because it was too hard to sing. I second the congratulations to our team but was that last comment really necessary? How many times I bite my tongue when I meet Americans on vacation and they say "tell us really do Canadians hate us" and I have to say that the odious minority doesn't speak for the moderate majority? Well.. how many?!! cmon dont hold out on us.

The NDP vote is stronger in University ridings. Look at Ottawa Centre... eek. no doubt...if I had $5 for every "stop Harper" pin displayed around some of the Montreal campusses I'd be richer than Paris Hilton overnight (not quite as sexually appealing though... ). University students have never, for the most part, experienced real-world issues and been in the business world. Most of my parent's friends who were socialists during their university years are now either moderates or moderate conservatives. You change...most people do. Anyways, so Ottawaman doesn't go crazy with me I'd say that there are a lot of well-intentioned people in the NDP, just I don't think the party understands what is necessary to raise Canada to the position of being a real power in this world. I say we elect TML for prime minister. Because I feel that way about all the parties. Too self interested and concerned with their own preservation and advancement.

oh, please tell me you're being sarcastic and that you don't really have the IQ of a hockey puck? first off, hockey is hockey but not all hockey is created equal. when you watch the minor leagues, i hope you're not sitting in the bleachers disparaging them because they're not as good as the majors? or is that different? i'd like to see YOU up against any of the olympic women's players - how about that 15 yr old swedish goalie? there are more than two olympic calibre teams. canada and states, sure - we usually let the states in because they have the biggest market share on viewership. no american team = not enough viewers = not enough dinero. it's the same reason you'll never see two canadian teams battle it out for the stanley cup unless there are some EXTREMELY extenuating circumstances. sweden is nothing to dismiss lightly. finland is better than sweden. russia will do much better once they start getting some funding from their government (when they were over here for some game or other, the russian women players were literally trading vodka for hockey tape). italy, well, okay - they only have a pool of 372 players from which to draw, but national pride will bring out more. czech republich - this is a country KNOWN For fierce national pride and iron guts. if not the next olympics, then definitely the one after, this team will be a serious contender. germany and switzerland - nothing to disregard lightly. right now, canada is a juggernaut, fine - but this is the leading edge of the sport. once it becomes more firmly established, the playing will level out. fyi: most of the *serious* hockey afficionados i know enjoy women's hockey more than men's because women play with skill and strategy, not just brute force and knuckles. I disagree, people like women's hockey for its flow, not skill and strategy. If you watch European men's hockey, like the Slovakia vs Russia game, its insanely fast, lots of rocking hits, and man those guys can dangle! It's like women's hockey but faster, with hitting, and better. It's when the North American hook and hold style gets blended in that the games get less entertaining. I still prefer watching the men because of the sheer level of talent they have, and some of the ridiculous plays that occur.
