Point taken. What if I let my teeth rot a little? -
Does language identity relate to the person or the group?
Hydraboss replied to Machjo's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
Britons by far. Canada is now defined by it's total lack of a culture. Multiculturalism has diluted it to the point where it no longer exists. Albertans and Kwebekers? There IS NOTHING in common, except maybe the desire to be an independant nation. I am Albertan, and have more in common with Englishmen. Alberta...Canada's Texas. It has been said many times before (sometimes by me): "Cultural identity" runs north-south, not east-west. There is zero in common between Alberta and Kwebek (except the parasitic relationship where we support the quasi-french). (P.s. - please make another poll....maybe on whether people like my answer or not. Or what flavor of pudding you should have after dinner. Thanks.) -
Harper to impose term limit on senators
Hydraboss replied to jdobbin's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
I see no reason for limits on any elected official. If the public wants them, then they should be able to have them. The Senate should be elected and there should be no term limits. -
Did Harper Learn ANYTHING From The BUSH Years ?

Flush. (wait) Flush. See Argus? Sometimes you have to do it twice to deal with the really bad ones. -
Alberta demands $700 million more from Ottawa
Hydraboss replied to jdobbin's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
First of all Smallc, welcome to the board. You're young and idealistic and that is admirable. As for "selfish Alberta soverenignists", be careful how you swing that cat around. If you go back a little in time on this board (no offence intended Geoff), you would find that Geoffrey's own signature was "Alberta Nationalist" I believe. He too was a working part time student and was very pro-Canadian. I'm not sure what the catalyst for change was (probably taxes), but he has begun to realize the extent to which central and eastern Canada rapes Alberta. His numbers also tend to be dead accurate, so you better bring your A game in your responses. So you like to quote numbers, do you? Ontario will contribute $22 billion dollars and Alberta will contribute only $18 billion (your numbers). As you love to point out, the population base is in Ontario and Kwebek. How many people are in Ontario, and how many are in Alberta? Are you too much of a coward to post the numbers that really matter? What, exactly, do your figures say the per capita contribution to equalization is for both provinces? And please don't go into your tired little routine of "the country of Canada is more than money or the sum of it's parts" either. What you're selling, we're not buying. This is about the ROC stealing money from my family - my kids. One other thing...I probably understand equalization as a concept and as a financial matter far better than you. I have been discussing this since you were in diapers. Ontario receives $375 million in equalization payments, and therefore they are on the federal dole. It makes absolutely no difference how much they pay into federal coffers; the province takes more than they give and therefore they are a welfare state. -
Evolution classes optional under proposed Alberta law

That's what I thought. Can't do it. Go back and play in the sandbox with the other kids. -

Back up the statement that you made and described as fact. -

I'm not denying that what you say is true, but I'm asking the poster to back up a statement that he made and described as fact. If I try to become a teacher and then opening state that I think teachers are a joke, then I should expect not to get the job. However, to state that by virtue of being enrolled in a program at a particular institution will automatically deniy me access to post-secondary schools is something I want cited. -
Look familiar?

Who does Canada Trust Most? - Reader's Digest
Hydraboss replied to Keepitsimple's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
Not foolish by any means. As for "book learnin'", there is no written substitute for direct experience. To have lived through the "Dark Ages" (PET years) provides a level of experience and understanding that no writer could ever adequately describe, and even if he/she was close, all writing has a bias one way or the other. Your understanding of the situation is swayed/tainted by the authors and instructors you have had. If your professors have a liberal bent, then your understanding and belief will have a liberal bent. Same goes for the other end of the scale. -

Exactly correct. -
Who does Canada Trust Most? - Reader's Digest
Hydraboss replied to Keepitsimple's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
No, not "terrible book learnin'" but simply different levels of understanding. I'm sure I have a different understanding of WWII era Germany than someone who lived through it. That's not a negative comment on anyone in particular; it's fact. PET would be shot dead if he set foot in parts of Alberta right now. Glad he's dead. -
Liberal bill aims to end pre-election ad binges
Hydraboss replied to jdobbin's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
Quite simply, that's just good legislation. (and, no, I'm not joking) Much of the funding that parties receive is from the Canadian taxpayer, so I have no interest in seeing them blow a bunch of cash on pre-election ads. This is starting to look like the car company policies of releasing the new models a friggin year before (2009's in March/April '08...used to be the 09's would have been released in late September '08). What's next? Are they going to start campaigning the day after the polls close? I would even be in favor of ALL advertising being counted against their spending limits for anything produced/released every day between elections. Get elected in Sept 2009? Fine. Spend a single dollar and it counts against your election budget in 2014. (Of course, I also believe that the LPC should be required to pay back the stolen taxpayer money and that amount should be held against their election budget.) -
Evolution classes optional under proposed Alberta law
Hydraboss replied to Smallc's topic in Provincial Politics in Canada
Thank you for all your hard work looking up this information. Would you please: 1) Provide a link to any post-secondary institution that makes reference to the inadmissablity of any particular biology course in any secondary institution (perhaps a program like pre-med or microbiology). 2) Provide a proper link to information where these schools state that they will not meet admission criteria (meaning that their course curriculumn does not meet provincial guidelines and therefore post-secondary requirements). 3) Provide a link to where you found the information (list of schools) that do not meet entrance requirements for post-secondary institutions. Thanks again. -
Evolution classes optional under proposed Alberta law
Hydraboss replied to Smallc's topic in Provincial Politics in Canada
Yup. Hell of a statement. Of course, since it's such common practice, it shouldn't take you but a second or two to supply a link to some proof. Again, I am well aware of the requirement for 30-level English, math and biology. Where, again, does it list as a precautionary statement to prerequisite acceptance the ?????????????????????While you're at it, would you please give a couple of examples of "Christian academies that deny evolution"? I'm not aware of any, so your help is greatly appreciated. U of Alberta Science ...can't seem to find anything that backs up your statement. -
First of all, a second language is always strictly for personal gain. Business would be the most sensible gain. You are right on the money that spoken languages are exactly like programming languages. They are for communication and instruction. As for the values I choose to teach my children, those are really absolutely none of your business. Materialism at it's lowest? And you're quite sure of this, are you? And YOUR values are superior to mine how? Please feel free to espouse your idealism of how multilingualism will save the world, but keep in mind that people have been killing each other for millions of years regardless of whether or not they spoke a common language.
-
The choice of a second language has absolutely nothing to do with "simply show(ing) respct for those around the world who are struggling to learn English". It's a business decision on her part, and a smart one at that. It won't be that far in the future when you will have to choose to do business in three languages in North America. English, Spanish and/or Mandarin/Chinese. The only one not in the equation is french.

Evolution classes optional under proposed Alberta law
Hydraboss replied to Smallc's topic in Provincial Politics in Canada
Oh, I'm well aware of entrance requirements. I'm looking specifically for a cite that shows schools that publish they "will not accept kids into science based programs if they have graduated from Christian academies that deny evolution". Hell of a statement; I just want to see proof. Cause, a proof is a proof you know. -
It makes far more sense to learn Spanish when you consider the Spanish-speaking population south of Canada's border. To continue learning a dead dialect of a language (french in Kwebek) makes absolutely no sense. 20% of Canadians versus the multi-millions of Spanish-speaking people in North America??? No comparison. By the way, this IS an English country whether you like it or not.
-
Basic math does not support the 75-80% price point. 1 barrel of oil (205 liters) at a cost of $60 US (roughly $70.80 CAN - actually, REALLY roughly) works out to $0.345 per liter of oil. If the pump price is $0.95 per liter, the crude cost is about 33% of that. (Again, numbers are for demonstration only) Still a ridiculous rip-off. The rest of your post is bang on.
-
Why would anyone bother in an English country? Outside of Kwebek, what purpose would it serve? My daughter is heading into grade 7 next year and has already chosen her options...not french, but Spanish. Now THAT makes some sense. edit:sp

Don't pop the bubbly just yet. I'm still strongly in favor of Alberta leaving the rest of you behind, but until that happens this province should be taking back the money stolen from it's citizens. Nice try though. You can wave to me over the wall. -
