  1. It's about freaking time we demanded some of our money back. Iris is not stupid (although she was a better Children's Services Minister than money-chick), but her error (other than supporting NDP Ed) is that she should be pressing for a hundred times that amount. It's Alberta money, and it should come back to Albertan's. I'm a firm believer that Alberta should be deeply in the red on every budget for the next ten years (only on paper of course) and become a have-not province when it comes to equalization. Turn-about is fair play, and Kwebek has been getting away with it for decades.
  2. Tried that. All the french guy did was screw us up as a country in 1982.
  3. Exactly. I don't consider it "laying someone off" when you replace him the next day (same position). The guy was fired for whatever reason, but HR ensures that the company is not at risk from a wrongful/constructive dismissal case by paying severance and having the worker sign-off that he has been laid off. The company goes about it's business, and the ex-worker gets EI. Done deal. One girl. Gave notice and is moving to Vancouver to "experience life" at the end of June. Doesn't even have a place to live or a job yet. Oh, to be twenty-something and single again! I'm not really referring to the single income, family supporter here. I'm commenting more on the single or at least childless types that can live on $1937.00 per month ($447 per week taxable). This number is based on the $42,300.00 max income level. If I was out of work, I would find a job. Always have. Doesn't matter to me if I get a shiny new headset at Mickey D's...it's income. The problem starts when people are "too good" to work a job like that. "I can make more on pogey, and then I don't have to actually go to work". What???? If you have worked enough in the last 26 weeks, you qualify for EI. Doesn't matter if the company closed down, moved or turned into nuclear waste. You work - you qualify (generally speaking). EI Info
  4. I can't say that the company I work for has many people quitting employment right now (only one that I know of), but there has always been a fair number of people asking for lay-offs when their employment is being terminated. It gives the ex-employee the ability to join the EI Ski Team, and the company doesn't have to worry about "wrongful dismissal" or "constructive termination" headaches. Human Resources loves it. Sign here....and off you go. Bye now! And EI IS a vacation...especially in an economic downturn. There's very little expectation to go job hunting when there are very few jobs posted. You don't need much of a job to max out on pogy and you can sit on your ass for a year.
  5. I still find all of this "racist" crap rather stunning. Again....the LIVE interview with the asian kid on Corus radio network (Charles Adler) had the kid asked, (Adler)"What exactly did the other boy say to you that was racist?" (Asian kid) "He said the f-word in Chinese, and that made me mad cause I'm the only Asian in our school. It was racist and made me mad." According to the Asian kid himself, the white kid NEVER SAID "F-cking chinese". Did the story change?
  6. First of all, I could care less if you think it's "cool" to post/link to information openly accessible on the internet. You are the one who used a defunct company name as your user name, so expect that some members here will do a simple search. Second, I could care less if you don't like my original post or think any of my response was a personal attack. The attack was well warranted for anyone who would DARE use the death of an Alberta worker to SNIVEL about his poor, failed company. The reason my answer sounds to you like a letter you may get from OHS, etc, is because my assessment makes sense. I notice you intentionally avoided answering any of the questions I posted. Were they in any way vague? You want discretion???? Don't link to the report of a death of an actual person that you do not know, and then proceed to give some half-assed, non-educated guess as to what killed him. You're pretty damn quick to blame the government for submarining your ladder cage that should have been installed (in your opinion), and then WITHOUT FACT OR KNOWLEDGE, saying that the worker would still be alive if only "the government" hadn't "screwed" you over. Been in Alberta 6 years you said? Bye.
  7. BS. There are many of us that say exactly that. There. Claim supported. If the Liberals win even a small minority, Canada will revert back to the old "east vs west" even more than it is now. Iggy is another mouthy showman, and nothing more. If this happens, it will still be an eastern government in control of the western colonies.
  8. Alberta OHS Go to page 20/24. This has nothing to do with the safety of workers using ladders. It has everything to do with the safety of scaffolders building ladder cages...and saving time and money in the process. Good idea. Too bad it didn't fly Peter.
  9. I have my own ideas what happened, but they're strictly speculation. Being lead on more than my share of these investigations (any more than 1 is too many), I have learned that jumping to conclusions is often the quickest, most direct and wrong answer you can provide. The OP is not concerned in the least for the death of the worker; only for his "ladder-cage" idea that industry/government wanted nothing to do with. Findings from the report state that the worker was not complying with the fall-arrest/protection rules as required, so regardless of where he fell from...he fell. That's what fall-protection is meant to prevent...falling. Would you walk around inside a sky diving plane when the door is open without a tag-line? Of course not. Why not? Because you could fall.
  10. I will comment on the first item, but not the second as I have no idea what went on with your bank (nor do I care). You are using a worker's death to whine that your ladder-cage idea flopped. I find this beyond disgusting. To speak directly to the incident, I would ask you the the following (since you are obviously a seasoned incident investigator): Would the worker have fallen to his death if he had worn proper fall-protection personal protective equipment as required? No, he would not have. Would the worker have fallen to his death if he had remained within the scaffold railings (without climbing the ladder)? No, he would not have. Would the worker have fallen to his death if he had fallen from the ladder while wearing fall-protection PPE? No, he would not have. Do you have proof of any sort that the worker fell to his death as a result of falling off the ladder? No, you do not. Will you continue to use any picture of a worker's death to bitch that you had a failed safety-related product, as long as the photo contains a ladder (even if not a contributing factor in the incident)? Yes, you probably will.
  11. Well, I think we've come to the end of our discussion. You obviously have no understanding of the map that even you posted. Don't get me wrong, it is an accurate map. It's just your comprehension of it that isn't. Do you realize just how huge a segment of that map is industrial area? Do you realize where the vast majority of people live (also known as the core concentration)? Before you continue to embarass yourself, you may want to do a little investigation into that one. Unless Freedom Ford, Future Shop and Canadian Tire are now casting ballots, there really aren't that many people in a whole lot of that map. Of course, if you were a real Albertan from the Edmonton area, you'd already know that.
  12. Very good genius. Do you know what forms the core of that map????? The University of Alberta. Thanks for proving my point.
  13. Okay, lets try this one last time for those of you that are borderline-retarded: Edmonton-Strathcona - A federal riding that does not extend past the city limits of Edmonton, and includes the neighborhood of Old Strathcona (which is not associated with the county of Strathcona) Edmonton-Strathcona Edmonton-Sherwood Park - A federal riding that crosses over to include an eastern portion of Edmonton, Sherwood Park (which is in the county of Strathcona), Ft. Saskatchewan, etc. Edmonton-Sherwood Park County of Strathcona - An Alberta county that does not form any part of the City of Edmonton; notice the division of highway 14 (everything to the west of that divider is the City of Edmonton) Map of Strathcona County Did I type too fast for you to comprehend? The county of Strathcona IS NOT part of the City of Edmonton. You must get very irate when people try to explain the difference between Washington State and Washington, DC.
  14. My god are you dense! Edmonton-Strathcona and Strathcona are NOT THE SAME RIDINGS! Edmonton-Strathcona is NOT made up of "30+ communities", it's a part of the south side of Edmonton INCLUDING THE UofA and is where Linda Duncan (NDP) took out Jaffer. Strathcona is NOT part of Edmonton and contains federal ridings that ARE 100% CONSERVATIVE. What part of this are having difficulty understanding????????????? I know that you're simply looking at Wiki, but try to understand the larger picture here.
  15. Not just my job. Lots of jobs are hard. (And I instructed at an Alberta college while attending, so don't preach to me) It's just that teachers DON"T have a hard job. They barely HAVE a job. It's less than what is normally considered part-time, and yet they make substantially more than a good portion of hard working folks. My wife's entire family is teachers (except one lawyer) and her father was a principal for over thirty years. So I have first hand and second hand knowledge going back over three decades. How long did you say you "were kind of a teacher"?
  16. You may want to reconsider this statement. I have a just a "teensy" bit more knowledge on the subject of teachers than you may ever want to admit. I know you've been to this thread (but you didn't read the whole thing), but that was before we all knew that you are a young student and not a taxpaying citizen. Read and learn
  17. So does getting screwed over by those guys from Kwebek.
  18. 'bought time too. My beer kept rolling off the end table.
  19. There. I fixed that for you. Quite a rant you were on there (considering I never said I believe in creationism cause I don't). Read the proposed bill. It says parents have the choice; it doesn't say they're taking the teaching out of the curriculum. Now who's forcing who to do what?
  20. Note to self: If anyone on this board calls you a racist or bigot ever again, quote this guy's posts
  21. Uhmmmmm....first of all, I made reference to the only NDP riding in Alberta...Old Strathcona (82ave area aka Whyte Ave). Second, Strathcona is not an Edmonton riding. It's a county outside of Edmonton (includes Sherwood Park, Ardrossan, etc). Third, the NDP MP beat out sitting Conservative MP Rahim Jaffer in Edmonton-Strathcona. Guergis is a Ms. not a Mr. and SHE'S in Ontario (Simcoe–Grey (Ontario)). She's also remarkably hot. And Jaffer's wife (but I assume that was the point of your misguided post). Learn your politics, small one. Can you hear me now?
  22. Of course there are. There has been a huge influx of people from other parts of the country in recent years. The ones that come to make cash and get out tend to keep their political views. Those that move here and intend on staying change their views to a much more conservative one once they experience the financial benefits of being in this province. Of course, then there's also the fact that they're surrounded by people who make no secret of their political will and that tends to rub off on them. This is no different from any other part of the country. Harper is "from" Alberta the way Newfoundlanders living in camps in Ft. MacMurray are "from" Alberta. Why am I slipping? The french vote would likely have nothing to do with the Strathcona vote. It's not a french center, it's a university center and that explains the block-voting that takes place. They vote based on their ideals and lack of experience in the "real world", and I would expect no less. Want to blame the french? Okay. How about Beaumont? Oh wait. They voted for a Conservative too.
  23. Leafless, the problem with your idea is that it's not just Kwebek that votes that way. Every region votes one of two ways (or a combination): who will give the most to my province & who do I NOT want in power. Ontario votes against the Conservatives; Alberta votes against the Liberals; the east coast votes for whomever gives them the most taxpayer's cash; and Kwebek...well...votes in a party for the same reasons as the east coast. This is called regionalism to the extreme. The west learned how there is little positive effect for them regardless of who they vote for (see: Mulroney). In the end, the only thing left is to vote for those that do the least amount of damage to their respective provinces. Federalism in this country is dead, and has been for many years. Now we just enjoy disliking each other. The only thing most provinces agree on is that no one likes Kwebek.
  24. There's a hell of a lot more than just two tiers of Albertans these days. The point is, Harper has done nothing of consequence for Alberta since being in power. Nobody really expected him to. The reality of the Canadian political system is that, once elected, politicians must do whatever they can to stay in the good graces of Kwebek and Ontario. The rest don't matter (except the east coast - they'll vote for whomever gives them the most money). The ONLY reason Harper gets votes out here is because he's not Liberal. NDP and Green aren't even worth mentioning in Alberta, with the exception of the single NDP riding which is at the University of Alberta (it's a protest vote by people who don't pay taxes).
  25. Weird. Me and norman agree. Except the last point. Harper was from Toronto, not the west. (he's not an Albertan, but he's played one on tv) Harper will get the vote out west, not because he's "from" here, but because he's not a Liberal. End of story. If Harper was running for the Liberals against a Conservative leader from Kwebek, he would lose out here. If JFK were alive and running for the Liberals, he wouldn't get the vote out here.
