What industries should the state never subsidize?

What are you talking about, shift the tax burden from who? Shift it to who? -
What industries should the state never subsidize?
Wilber replied to Machjo's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
Except country Y's industries all went broke because they couldn't compete with X's subsidized and protected industries. X wins because Y didn't think was worth supporting its own industries so they just disappeared. The market can only regulate itself if everyone plays by the same rules. -

You still don't address the issue of unsubsidized industries having to compete with those that are subsidized as well as protected by tariffs. You have to deal with the world you live in, not the one you would like. The US may be booming but it is on a combination of tax cuts that aren't paid for and trillion plus dollar deficits. It's being done on a credit card. -

You make no sense. You want to make an industry smaller, then take more money out of it. -

Go back to your cave then and don't expect utilities, roads, police, firefighters, a military or any other service government provides. -

I see Trump as more of a new Mussolini than a new Hitler. I think Hitler is huge stretch but his MO is right out of Joseph Goebbel's playbook.- 223 replies

You seem to think resource industries are some kind of piggy bank when in fact they are businesses like any other, they operate of profit margins and if they aren't there, people won't invest in them. Where were you during the NEP? Trudeau Sr. tried to do just what you are advocating. Energy companies fled in droves and the Alberta economy took decades to recover. Now you want to do the same thing again. -

Well what do you want to do? These are the kind of companies that actually develop technologies, they don't just make stuff. You go on about developing value added products while at the same time advocating giving up our ability to produce them by giving up our markets to business' that are protected and subsidized. A nation of burger flippers trying to get by selling each other stuff that other countries produce. US tariffs -

The country that Trump says will not interfere with others sovereignty is the same country that coined the phrase, Regime Change. Something it has indulged in and Trump has mused about on several occasions, Venezuela, Iran.- 223 replies

USA Sinks into Authoritarinism

Trump and McConnell are doing a pretty good job of suborning the courts. One check on the way out. With Gerrymandering and voter suppression, they are working on removing Congress as another check. I share your hope about November, the people themselves may be the only check left because the balance is being systematically destroyed by the likes of McConnell.- 223 replies

Wilber replied to ReeferMadness's topic in Federal Politics in the United States
A lot of people thought Hitler wasn't serious. I don't think Trump gives a crap about democracy or people, everything is about him. How actively he will pursue it is debatable but with allies like McConnell he has made a good start and there is no doubt in my mind that he would like to be Emperor if he got the chance. The American system of checks and balances looks to be turning into an empty coat. But then, any system is only as good as the people who will defend it.- 223 replies

Boeing and Airbus subsidies WTO calls Airbus subsidies illegal Embraer and Bombardier It's a complicated business. The fact is, if you want an aerospace industry you will be providing subsidies in some fashion. -

Actually, BC joined Confederation on the condition the railway was built. -
It is hard to believe there are that many but it is not just Trump, the world's view of America itself has gone way down.

We don't have an open border with the US. You need a passport to enter the US and Canadian citizens are refused entry all the time, sometimes for completely arbitrary reasons. The chances of Alberta leaving Canada to join the US are somewhere between slim and none.

I thought that was odd as well.

Meech is a very interesting and complicated subject, you would probably be better off researching it yourself because it is difficult for even Canadians to explain to each other, let alone to a foreigner.

NAFTA negotiations.

Absolutely, I won't buy a dairy or poultry product that isn't labeled Canadian content. We just ordered a new furnace. I'm buying a Napoleon, designed and built by a Canadian company in Canada. Didn't even look at anything else. -

S you want energy companies and their employees to subsidize your transit and bike paths.
