  1. I think MH is right and I would say the same about any government that used the not withstanding clause in such a partisan, trivial manner.
  2. I'm agreeing with you. By those people, I mean the ones you are talking about
  3. How about any other costs they may have incurred?
  4. Not sure it would be practical. A big reason for for Energy East was for export which means getting it to the east coast. Can large tankers use the St. Lawrence and would that be even harder to sell even if they could?
  5. Chrétien and others
  6. To remain fluent in a language you have to use it. That is where our geography works against us. There are long waiting lists for the French emersion schools in BC but if there is little need to use the language after you leave school, it will just atrophy. From a purely practical point of view, while certainly not useless, there are a few Asian languages and possibly Spanish which would be more useful than French in BC Who speaks Esperanto? If you are going to learn a second language, at least learn one you can use somewhere else.
  7. For practical purposes, most of the country has regional unilingualism which works fine regionally, but that doesn't solve the problem of how you operate a federal system that represents the whole country. What language would you have used in Parliament for instance?
  8. My problem is that you would break up the country over a single issue, disregarding all the downsides of doing so. Personally, I don' believe a Canada geographically split in two would have a future. Official bilingualism may be a PITA but it's a small price to pay for a country this good.
  9. Still, you haven't given me one real reason other than you don't like bilingualism
  10. Yes, those people.
  11. Why do you want to make being Canadian even more complicated? Do you dislike French that much?
  12. What would be in it for Quebec? All those things you want, the ROC would need for unfettered access to the Atlantic and between the ROC’s provinces. Quebec would not. What incentive would the Maritimes have to stick with Provinces that were so willing to cut them off from the rest of their country? How would the remaining provinces build infrastructure needed to tie them together? How would you handle defence? Etc, etc. Lot of difficult issues there and for what? We aren’t the only country with more than one official language, Switzerland has four. Even though the US is officially English, Spanish is extensively used, both commercially and by governments.
  13. Those people.
  14. Deflect, Deflect, Deflect.
  15. So nothing. Why bring it up? Oh I know. Deflect, deflect.
  16. What does geography have to do with your huge trade deficit with China?
  17. What does geography have to do with your trade balance with China? Is the Pacific Ocean uphill heading westbound?
  18. The original point was you claiming how China traded more with the US than Canada. What your chart says it China sells a hell of a lot more to the US than the other way around. You are much more a customer of China than a trader with China. Chinese trade to the US is a super highway. US trade to China is a goat track.
  19. Not your trade with China, Nice try.
  20. You should read your chart a little closer. When it comes to US exports, China is a distant #3 behind Canada and Mexico. The US exports 2 1/2 times as much to Canada than it does to China. I'm quite comfortable with Canada ignoring Trump's BS deadlines and doing this thing properly. Pleasantly surprised actually, considering how many nay sayers were claiming Trudeau and Freeland would just fold like a cheap suit. Canada US trade is basically balanced. China US trade is 80% one way in China's favour.
  21. Canada would be split geographically. How long the Maritimes and Newfoundland would remain part the rest of Canada is very questionable. New Brunswick is the only official bilingual province, it might just join Quebec. Who knows about the others.
  22. Both Freeland and Lighthizer have made it clear that they are not negotiating in public. Loons can make up whatever crap they want but they have actual business to conduct.
