NAFTA negotiations.
Wilber replied to Thinkinoutsidethebox's topic in Canada / United States Relations
Since when is competing with an industry that is subsidized and protected by tariffs a free market? I'm in favour of a user pay system but the American dairy products entering this country are not user pay, they are subsidized. -

Don't be so godamn high and mighty just because you are a friggin vegan. Who are you to decide what industries are valid just because you don't personally use them? -

Do you use things like public transit? Doesn't work for me but if you do, I am subsidizing you. The feds spend nearly 30B a year on subsidies of one kind or another. Better make sure you aren't sponging off your fellow taxpayers who don't use any of those products or services. Get the idea? -

I don't care. There are things I don't use that are subsidized, that doesn't mean I think they should disappear. -

Bully for you, I'm sure there a things you use that I don't and couldn't give a crap about. -

The aren't subsidizing the industry, they are subsidizing its consumers. When is that going to sink in. -

Like what? You don't think farming is a long term industry? When are you planning on quitting eating? Remember, less than 3% of the US market is open to tariff free competition so how do Canadians compete against businesses that are protected by tariffs and receive subsidies? How many tariffs and subsidies did the Americans drop in this agreement? You get one guess. -

Why should we let our industries be snowed under by others that are subsidized. How does a competitor being subsidized make your business a relic? Trouble is, people can't see any further than cheap stuff and they want someone else to subsidize it. -

Depends on whether you want to destroy the industry. Dairy farms don't operate in a vacuum, they consume more goods and services than just about any other type of farming. The average farm has somewhere between $500K and a million in annual operating expenses, almost all of it spent locally. Their demise affects a lot more people than just the farmers. -

Those commies down south are forcing you. How can you give a one time buyout and then expect people to compete with subsidized goods. -
Several provinces held referendums.
-
There have been eleven minor amendments but when it comes to major changes the process is daunting. Amendments require the approval of the Commons, Senate and two thirds of the provinces representing at least 50% of the population.

So why is less than 3% of the US dairy market open to foreign competition tariff free? The US export far more dairy than it imports. Four times as much to Canada. You need to lay off the orange Kool Aid, it can rot your brain. -

And if you think it is just the US that subsidizes its over production. Australia bailed out its industry to the tune of $450 million last year and the EU offered theirs 500 million Euros. Now Canada gets to join that club. -

Probably. Supposedly a user pay system with no subsidies is somehow Communist. On the other hand, a system that dumped 50 million gallons of subsidized milk last year because there was no market for it is "free enterprise" and the way we need to go. -
Gladly pay for it but I’m not paying to maintain a military that you can rent whenever it suits you. If that’s what you want, get your own because the military I pay for isn’t for rent to individuals, nor would I expect anyone to join it. Hire your own mercenaries. The problem with mutual assured destruction is that it is your only option if you have no conventional capability. Say some tinpot country with a moderate size military with limited nuclear capability wanted to take Vancouver Island. Without any conventional weapons, the whole country would have to commit suicide to defend you. I doubt they would think you are worth it.
-
Like what? Why is it too much for you to think things through? You don't get a military on demand just when you want it. If that's what you want, get your own fucking military and pay for it yourself. I guess committing suicide is your idea of defence because that would be your only option The military are emergency response people, or don't you consider a war an emergency. Why should they defend someone the likes of you who would just cut them off if they are hurt on the job. Looking after you would be my first veto if I was in the military. Or do they only get to veto things you don't like and would have to get your permission. .

Ford-Kavanaugh Sexual Assault Allegation
Wilber replied to WestCanMan's topic in Federal Politics in the United States
Ya but you are talking about a lifetime appointment to the highest court in the land. That should mean leaving no stone unturned to get to the bottom of multiple accusations, at least one of which comes from a respected academic. But hey, put him on the court that's fine by me, it's not our SC. -

Yes it is, the court cannot impeach but it can determine whether Congress properly followed the rules. Now whether Congress could do it over and correct their mistake is something I do not know. -

You're standards for supreme court justices don't seem to include anything they may have done in college. That's fine with me as long as it is the SCOTUS and not our court. Americans deserve it. -
That applies to all government borrowing. Who do you think is going to pay the interest on and redeem those bonds, the Tooth Fairy? Are you going to conjure up a military on demand if the country is threatened? Do you think military and emergency response people should have a personal veto over what duties they will carry out? If you are going to just cut them loose if they get hurt on the job, why shouldn't they? See above.

Not directly but it can rule on whether Congress properly followed the rules of impeachment. Which as they are the court of final appeal, pretty much amounts to the same thing. -

Perfect. Just drainin the swamp and replacing it with a cesspit. -

Yup, you get what you deserve and Americans deserve a frat boy drunk and possible sexual assaulter on their Supreme Court. Put him in while the standards are still low. -
How is that different from government borrowing money any other way? What a selfish attitude. Why would anyone want to join a military to protect the likes of you. Your police, firefighters, paramedics etc aren't drafted, maybe they shouldn't join either. Consider that when you need one of them.
