They weren't banned.  They were blocked because they were not invited!  They weren't on the list of the press pool. This was just a gaggle.

A press gaggle (as distinct from a press conference or press briefing) is an informal briefing by the White House Press Secretary which (as used by press secretaries for the George W. Bush administration) is on the record, but disallows videography. The term can also be used to refer to the informal interactions between the press and the press secretary that occur before a videotaped press briefing.[1]

One former member of the White House press corps provided the following historical context:[2]

"Gaggles" historically refer to informal briefings the press secretary conducts with the press pool rather than the entire press corps.

Take note of what happened to Fox News during the Obama admin.

So far, none of the four other major networks has given any indication that they wish to disinvite Fox News from the White House pool -- the rotation through which the networks share the costs and duties of White House coverage and the most significant interaction among the news channels.

I suppose major networks has a say on the press pool.....and the major networks didn't mind at all that CNN and others, weren't on the list.  Hahahaha   They must be tired too, of CNN's being disruptive with all its repetitive questions! :D
