US Federal VAT Consumption Sales Tax
herbie replied to August1991's topic in Federal Politics in the United States
I don't think he really thinks Democrats would.... we know Americans loathe taxation at any level by anyone so for either party it would be political suicide. Best chance to have done it was during Reagan, it was more in fashion at the time. Missed the boat on a good gov't revenue stream. I don't think a 5% tax would hurt anyone in the US if they brought it in as soon as inflation's corralled, everyone would be numbed to higher prices. It would hurt everyone else, as the value of the USD would go up. -
So the PM should go to conferences in Paris on the bus? Or went to PEI and N&L by rowboat to inspect the damage? Or would you rather see him sit in his office mandating what you can have for breakfast and how you tie your shoes like you seem to think he does? Getting real tired of defending a PM I'd never vote for from petty idiots.

Drax (UK): "green" burning of Canada's old growth forests
herbie replied to myata's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
Not gonna say the specific region, but ask around your area of BC. And I'm not gonna say ALL these projects are bad, one finger joint mill here sustained itself for 15 years and made a shitload of difference for hundreds of local native and non-native employees. A pellet plant down the road has been running quite a while and more are around. But there's an entire industry of finding grant money in rural BC and no thought given to sustainability in any it seems. We'll just get another grant for something else and milk that until it runs out... seems to be the attitude. I'll also point out that the old gyppo mills were ones that declared bankruptcy and left an absolute mess for the public to clean up. Not grant scammers but 'real smart business guys' like Trump... -
Does it have permission for agents to run around armed and shoot people like on TV? Surely not. The whole point is we don't even know what they exactly mean by police stations. They can't "arrest" people in Canada and if they harass Cdns they should be declared persona non grata and expelled. That seems to be the accusation, but with no evidence given.

SHOCKER - Poilievre goes super-WOKE !

I get it ArmyGuy, you don't think adding dental to the main healthcare is a good idea, but I and the vast majority of voters do. Most employers do too as it would reduce the 'extended benefits' cost from their pocket. We're not likely to change each other's minds. But I will put to you that it's a (not fully) done deal and eliminating it would not look too good on anyone's election platform. So the actual problem is how to deal with its cost going forward. -

Myata does not comprehend that logs is just a generic word. There aren't any Old Growth Ancient Holy poplars or tree limbs or sawdust. Maybe volunteer to come put out the fires we get here when the leftover sawdust from the gyppo mill that closed 30 years ago spontaneously ignites every so often. Understand the biomass plant they built took much longer clearing it all and went way over budget to get the foundation on actual ground at the other one closed 25 years ago. But she did point out one thing: that biomass used up shitloads of grant money, supplied power only to the mills -they never even considered backfeeding to the town itself - , 99% of the original workers were from Spain, when it did startup hired only a few locals and shut down after a year when the feed supply (read that as grant money) ran out. Eventually sold to a conglomerate with the local Band's grant money and no one doubts will shut down again the minute that runs out. You can drive 1 mile out of town and for the next 50 past piles of wood scrap, stumps, broken trees bulldozed into piles and set on fire every winter and that fuel fully wasted. Not turned into pellets, not burned at the bio-mass plant. -
Could you get any more petty with your anti_Trudeau BS?

US Federal VAT Consumption Sales Tax

Not objecting to the use of the word, just to implying there's something wrong with taxing everyone at the same rate. That's the whole point and was stressed when Canada's GST was introduced, Added onto the price later so it's clear you're paying a tax and that everyone is getting nailed not just some. The rebating part was somewhat complicated and came with a huge new bureaucracy to send out the cheques to low income and calculate those qualifying incomes year after year. When I ran my business, it was easy as hell. Calculate the money I collected on sales and deduct all the GST I'd spent on all goods & services to provide what I sold. No complicated paperwork required. Far easier than the Provincial tax where you needed to keep records of what the PST applied to and only got a tiny % for collecting it. The original question is why in the fiscal position of the last couple decades does the USA not use one when it surely would benefit from a GST/VAT? Plus, let's not forget that it causes more money to move between suppliers, produces, sellers, gov't and citizens. -

No I pointed out 2 ways to reduce the burden on lower incomes. And I really don't care if bean counters picked a word and labelled it "bad" I heard enough economic doublespeak when I lived with an accountant, and see enough whenever a company has massive layoffs and their stock value shoots up. -

Yes, I was a math major. 1 out of 6 is not a small group. Six million is not a small group. How can you dismiss a figure like six million as insignificant in the overall picture? What is it that you don't get - that this is a fix for an omission on Day One or the overall idea that social programs are the number one part of the budget that benefits your daily life. You want spending cuts, then cut the spending on shit instead of things that help. -

The report doesn't mention why they use the wood pellets. Mixing those in actually reduces the CO2 and pollutants from coal burning plants. Enough to meet the standards there, but diddly squat compared to overall world-wide coal emissions. And "primary forests" simply means where it is most commercially feasible to perform forestry operations. I live there. Pellets are made from sawmill scrap, forest waste and logs not best suited for lumber. So some Old Growth" content might be included. No one cuts down evergreen timber just to make pellets. We do live in a market economy so if the sawmill isn't buying and a pellet plant is that's life. The tree's already cut down. Doesn't happen a lot and not for really good logs. And what's the author's alternative? Stop using the pellets and increase their CO2 output in those coal plants? -
And I'm of the opinion you should all drop your xenophobic and conspiracy bullshit and get down on your knees and be thankful the "MSM" exposed this so that there will be no choice other than to react. The nonstop bullshit of posters that Trudeau should've done something about the crackhouse next door when you haven't even phoned the cops is complete nonsense. -that was 'allegory' before you all go off subject posting about there's no crackhouse next door...

declining to mention the low and middle incomes get the GST rebated.... declining to acknowledge that even though all pay a little more, low spenders pay far less than big spenders There's also the option to; instead of a massive rebate program, simply drop the taxes on LOWER INCOMES massively -

A small minority in your opinion that is anything but. There's a lot of working people with NO dental or extended medical and even unionized ones with barely more for coverage. The 'employer pays anyway' is also a pretty damned American attitude (if you just got a decent job!) that is pretty weak. You also state again "could be used in health care" when that's exactly what it is being put into. We've been lulled into thinking dental is something else when it wasn't included since Day One. Do you really think needy people should suffer because there's some 'better' priority? Do you really want to continue the Conservative line that "it's a good idea but we can't afford it at this time" knowing full well it's never going to be a good time because money will always be needed for something else like shitbox submarines and corporate tax cuts like their 'child care plan' from 30 years ago? -
When you people are capable of discussion, can read what's written in front of you and can do more than post moronic memes. moot points and what you think are insults, feel free to continue on the subject. I hate to disappoint you but 1953 is not going to happen again despite your best efforts, so you're wasting your time thinking like it is still then.

It's no surprise at all. I mean you 're all willing to accept the FBI has an office in Budapest because it says so on a TV show. And that Trudeau personally goes over every building and occupancy permit in the City of Toronto because of a headline. Today the headlines were how Trudeau is weak because he hasn't spoken out that Chinese laws are not applicable int Canada, I guess because some of their readers are so damn stupid that wasn't obvious.

Just can't stop blurting out the same settler attitudes can you? If they couldn't walk to and from a school, then maybe they just shouldn't go! Why should I pay... Especially enjoyed the 'they get free land' comment. The irony...

The Folly of Ignoring Climate Change

Oh Jeez yet another climate activist who knows it's 2022 and doesn't wear a hair shirt and sandals to walk on water to get across oceans. -
Answered your own question there, didn't ya?

So you're gonna argue that it's not enough and the go on it should be put into health care which dental care is? Plus argue how we should've spent it on something else while arguing we shouldn't be spending at all? doesn't even make sense. -
Aristedes of course you wouldn't have. You must have the offending ignoroid on ignore. Don't worry another immediately popped up blaming lefties for the abuse in res schools....

The Folly of Ignoring Climate Change

No! No! No! By the weekend gas will be $2.50/L And the same lot from there will still cry out how EVs are stoopid. Facts and two by fours to the head don't work on some donkeys. -
Mr Irrelevance spews the same toxic shit again.... By NOT beating them for speaking their own language. By maybe teaching in their own tongue along with ESL By letting them go home on weekends By setting up one rooms schools on reserve. By training some people on reserve to become teacher. By building roads to and from those reserves. By not letting churches do the 'educating'. By not treating them like shit when they interact with 'the white man' By recognizing they are part of "our" culture as much as we are theirs shall I go on?
