California regulates cow farts
?Impact replied to betsy's topic in Federal Politics in the United States
Except of course your premise is based on a complete fabrication. I ate horse meat a few weeks ago, and was about pick up some at the store the other day but decided on chicken instead. If you are going to make such absurd statements, you should at least check your facts before posting. -
Proportional Representation Discussion
?Impact replied to Michael Hardner's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
Agreed, if a completely new issue comes up during a term then the individual parliamentarians should be allowed free vote on them. Technically they are today, but of course can be kicked out of caucus. A political party should have a clear mandate (not just campaign promises, but general party principals and guidelines) and they can hold their members to that mandate, but outside of its scope there should be freedom. That doesn't mean however there won't be a lot of grey area. A good example is when the party says it will not create an abortion bill, but a member brings out a bill on definition of beginning of life. That is certainly a grey area, some may say light grey and others dark grey. -

No, you linked to an article from some right wing nutcase that loosely quoted a German publication, that quoted a Green party member (not a leftist, a environmentalist but you obviously don't know the difference). The original quote is nothing like what the right wing nutcase summarized, and even further from what you are claiming. -
If you look closely, the markets were low on Friday, picked up by Monday, and climbed on Tuesday as well. The election was on Tuesday, but the figures like the DJIA were from the close which was long before any election results came in. The fact they didn't drop on Wednesday but continued to climb is a good sign for Trump, but they were already heading in that direction clearly before so they are not a response to his election. They might be a response to less uncertainty, but not specifically to Trump.

Proportional Representation Discussion

What about all the other European parliaments that have proportional representation, and thriving economies. Germany is one of many excellent examples, yet you non-geniuses don't look at them. -

Discretionary spending 2015: $1.16 trillion Tax breaks 2015: $1.24 trillion -
I remember back in my school days we would occasionally get forms to fill out, and they asked the question "Sex: M/F". The reason I remember is it always provoked us to say (I don't remember if I ever had the guts to actually write) things like "often", or "yes please".

Is it productive to ban literature?
?Impact replied to drummindiver's topic in Moral & Ethical Issues
No, it should not. The librarian is wrong, and this appears to be her issue because she didn't like that many people were borrowing it. Sorry, but that is what a public library is about, and if the book is popular then it might be time to consider purchasing another copy. If she were doing her job as a librarian, then she might want to recommend many of the other books on Hitler or specifically Mein Kampf that discuss it from alternative viewpoints. Your local librarian or library board is not doing it's job. Generally library boards have regular meetings where you can bring up this issue. -
150 years ago, a short trip from Manhattan would put you right in the middle of huge green spaces, and central park was nothing like it is today with the ponds, jogging paths, concert venues, zoos, etc. This is about greenspace in the middle of a rapidly growing city.

Hey, why not? The original topic was a complete fabrication, why not add another one. There is no regulation of cow farts, or banning of meat, but if you want to rant about liberals/socialists then why not make up shyte in order to do that. -

No, it is not. If your local library does not carry it, then I suggest downloading a copy from the internet. Either the original or an English translation. -
Pipeline Politics - Is Canada the only "sucker" Nation?
?Impact replied to Keepitsimple's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
Bitumen cannot flow through a pipeline. -
There are 843 acres of green space in the middle of Manhattan due to the foresight of city planners over 150 years ago. I am sure there were a lot of people then, and in the intervening years that didn't get the point.

While once the Y chromosome was large and contained as many genes as the X chromosome, it has been rapidly deteriorating. The X chromosome contains almost two thousand genes, while the Y chromosome has deteriorated to a few hundred with less than a hundred being functional. A few hundred million years ago both chromosomes were roughly the same size, each containing a similar number of genes. What is the eventual destiny of the Y chromosome, will it eventually decay to nothing? Now what do you have to say to those who talk about the feminization of our species over the past half century?

America under President Trump
?Impact replied to betsy's topic in Federal Politics in the United States
My numbers are based on federal spending only. The annual appropriations process that Congress goes through is the discretionary spending in your chart. The mandatory spending is not so much a budget process, but Congress deciding on things like eligibility for social security, etc. It is over twice the size of discretionary spending. On top of that are interest payments on debt, which at a mere $230 billion is only 6% of all spending. -

You are only looking at discretionary spending. Look at the total budget and you will see that Social Security & Unemployment is the largest ($1.3 trillion), followed by medical & health at $1 trillion. -

Yes, $610 billion is a lot of dough. While they are rightfully accounted for in other categories, both Veterans benefits and interest on the debt are directly linked to the size of military as well. I would say the real spending is more like 610 + 160 + 25% of 230 = $830 billion. -

More and more small businesses are focused on bringing in product from around the world, or outsourcing their manufacturing overseas. Yes, there are some sectors that are local, but in the goods producing sectors it is getting to be very few like food where time is a critical factor. Here is a successful small Canadian business, they designed and made an excellent product line (I have 3 of their models) but the reality is made in China. -
