  1. They are donations to the Liberal party by Canadians, and subject to the federal financing rules - period.
  2. Yet they cheered when Harper got rid of the per-vote financing, and brought in his Corrupt Elections Act on way less than that. Other countries are able to function just fine by having the politicians do the job they are well paid to and reach compromises with other parties. We don't need dictators in this country, Conservative or Liberal. That is why I don't support ranked ballots either.
  3. I am more focused on: Exactly. Not really Earth shattering. Let's face it, she just got a bit pissed off one day. That's about it. The more I learn about Viola Desmond, the more that statement reeks. Why do you feel compelled to belittle this lady? Are you not satisfied that she was violently attacked and hurt by a theater usher? Are you not satisfied that she was forced to spend a night in a male jail cell for a crime she did not commit? Are you not satisfied that she was not accorded a fair trial? Are you not satisfied that she was robbed by the province of her hard earned money? Are you not satisfied that the province ruined her life, and caused her to flee the province? Are you not satisfied that she was given a criminal record that she did not deserve? What exactly would satisfy you?
  4. I was watching a documentary about British submarines the other day, and when a new sailor earns his dolphins they are placed in a glass of rum which he is to drink down and then filter them out with his teeth. In some ways this is also hazing, and equally troubling because of the abuse of alcohol. I have no problem with responsible drinking, I do so myself. I am however concerned when someone is coerced into it. I was happy to hear the commander say the drinking was voluntary, although none of the recruits turned it down. There would be a certain level of peer-pressure that the recruit would feel, regardless of what the captain said. When welcoming someone into a new group, we should go out of our way to welcome them and not make them pass some irrelevant test in order to debase them because of some dumb ritual. Yes, there may be competition to get into the group based on knowledge or physical skills or whatever is relevant but that is about meeting the requirements of the group. A team is a group of individuals supporting each other to do better, and hazing is the exact opposite. Those who say you are not a team player if you don't participate are lying, they are the ones that are not the team players.
  5. What stinky hole did you pull that one out of. There was a nomination process and and an evaluation committee that came up with this result. You are now creating your own criteria based on her skin color. I didn't pick her, I would have been equally happy if someone else was selected and I gained the opportunity to learn about another Canadian. This however was the result and I am equally happy because I got to learn about Viola Desmond. I am not the one ranking people here, and putting the black people at the back of the bus (or in the balcony).
  6. Your response was to a website that equated anything Muslim with implementation of Sharia law in Canada - it was complete garbage. There is no Sharia law in Canada - period.
  7. The problem is not stigmatization, it is dealing with the reality of a grow-op. There is a big difference between someone with a plant or two near the window, and an operation that has bootleg hydro and hundreds of plants under massive grow lights and misters or other automated watering system. The high humidity and heat completely destroy a house, leaving mold and mildew and an unsafe living environment. Additionally there is residue from the large quantities of pesticides, fungicides, and fertilizers used. It is the difference between the old lady with some potted plants in her kitchen, and a greenhouse.
  8. You are making the claim it was based solely on the fact that this was a black female. Look in the mirror Archie Bunker, you are the one offended by the selection not I. You couldn't even read the bloody profile I copied, and wrote her off as someone who got pissed off one day. She is one among many Canadians that deserve to be recognized, and today is her day. Next time the $10 bill changes it will be someone else. I guess you go through your baseball card colection and burn Jackie Robinson as well? Get over yourself.
  9. That is one of the problems we are trying to address. There is no reason a party with 30% of the support should get 100% of the power. We have a lot of people voting anti-Conservative or anti-Liberal because of our screwed up perception of how to govern in this country. Lets get people voting for who they want to govern, and then force the politicians to work together.
  10. Well Rona Ambrose is spending an inordinate amount of time bitching it the House of Commons about the Liberal party soliciting donations.
  11. That is the crux of the matter. Nobody is saying that Viola is the most deserving female in Canada's history, not by a friggen billion light years. Someone made the very valid observation that the only female to appear on Canadian 'paper' currency has been the Queen, so perhaps it is time we actually try to change that. There is a story that goes along with the 400+ names that were looked at, and they are all deserving. A decision needs to be made to pick one, and so a decision was made. Now it the opportunity for Canadians to read a little an learn about this little known Canadian, and yes most will not even take that opportunity. Let me make it simple, the following is from the Bank of Canada website. It is worth reading, and also might help you in understanding why she has been so obscure for far too long.
  12. I'm saying there is nothing partisan here. This is not about the Conservatives or Liberals, it is about getting new fixed wing SAR aircraft. The process was initiated during the Conservative government and completed during the Liberal one. Nothing shut down, no change of direction was made, no new magic incantation was recited. This is government working as it should. The ball was passed and there was no fumble. The criteria was set while the Conservatives were at the helm, the evaluation happened while the Liberals were at the helm. Final negotiations with the selected vendor occurred while the Liberals were in the drivers seat. If the Liberals decided after the evaluation that they didn't like the results then they could have pulled the plug and had a new RFP issued, that would be a change in the opposite direction. That clearly did not happen. The bigger issue would be if there were a change of government now, after the selection is made and then the contract was cancelled - again that is not happening.
  13. Read through the list of 400+ names that were looked at, or even the short list. I would be surprised if you recognized more than a few of them. This gets back to the old drunkard John A.. It seems that when anyone wants to talk about historical figures we jump to the few we know. This is an opportunity for people to read about someone else. We don't need Chairman Mao's portrait everywhere. Perhaps that is part of the criteria for the selection committee, a chance to give someone who is relatively obscure a chance to be recognized. Like I said, 35 million Canadians might read an article in the paper and say interesting, and then move on. More than likely it will be only a small fraction that will even read the article to begin with. This is an infinitesimally small recognition, no need to get your shorts all twisted up.
  14. RFP was release March 31, 2015 (long before Liberals) RFP was amended September 4, 2015 (still during Conservative mandate) RFP closed January 11, 2016 (shortly after new Liberal government) Where exactly do you get that the Liberals has any involvement what so ever? It is valid to complain about the wrong aircraft, but when you make this some partisan exercise you are barking up the wrong tree.
  15. We put symbols on our money, and change them frequently. Look the the friggen quarter, it seems to change daily. Suddenly a black lady gets recognized and its the end of the friggen world. I have never heard a complaint before about someone being recognized on our money that was inappropriate until it was someone with a little colour in their skin. Step back people and look yourselves in the mirror. The last big controversy about the $10 bill was a few year ago when they put out the description the the website about the wrong mountain peak they used. Someone with a sharp eye who had hiked the mountain noticed it was wrong, and they changed the description. Big friggen deal, we didn't have a national emergency. Why are people upset the Viola is being recognized? If she were white, those same people would pay zero attention. They might read an article in the paper and say, interesting never heard about her before - and then move on. That is what 35 million Canadians are doing with Viola, but we seem to have a few that think this recognition will somehow bring the world to a crashing halt.
  16. Not at all. Most of the time cost is associated with extra bells and whistles. Some of them might impart true benefits, but if you don't need those benefits then they are essentially extra cost. Others might offer zero practical benefit, but some people might want them anyway. My $9.95 wrist watch from Wal-Mart is just as good (perhaps better) than the $15,000 Patek Phillipe watch I want. No, I'm not trying to imply that the Italian aircraft is just an ego aircraft, but obviously it has a very different value equation. Don't forget that the money saved allows for great flexibility. Perhaps we could only get 12 of the Italian jets instead of 16, or perhaps we are able to get outfit with better gear, or whatever.
  17. Do you want the government setting the price for bread as well? As far as I can see pricing is a market issue, not something that should be government regulated. Yes there will be taxation on the product, and that is something the government regulates but the base price should be market driven. I believe the recommendation was taxation based on THC level, which while not comprehensive is certainly the one of the key factors.
  18. What is the difference between her and the American 'hero' who wouldn't give up her seat on the bus? Rosa Parks is highly celebrated for her actions by all but the KKK. What is your problem with Viola Desmond? How is this infinitesimally small recognition of her actions going to ruin your life?
  19. Not sure what party that is. Since it's inception, the Conservative party has been in power 77% of the time. In the past 30 years, either the Conservative party or the progressive Conservative parties have been in power 57% of the time. It appears to me that people that think they are 'conservatives', because they are too damn lazy to understand politics, are getting far, far more than their fair share of 'power'. I agree that democracy is not static, and things need to involve and include better voter engagement. This is absolutely nothing, zero, zilch that is radical about proportional representation. It is a tried, tested, and true system the world over. I see it as only a step towards better democracy, the Swiss are light years ahead with their form of direct democracy that (yes, far from perfect) allows a representative government for efficiency reasons but keeps it in check. We need to be continually looking at improving the system.
  20. Yes, Banting and Best would be good to recognize. In fact we already do, look at the back of the polymer $100 bill, between the two serial numbers. I didn't whine when it came, unlike the children that are whining now because of the colour of skin of the person being honoured this time.
  21. Were were you before the election, there was all kinds of uproar. Why do the alt right have to rewrite history to make a point?
  22. Yes, they absolutely were. The fact that he made relatively sane choices, instead of the completely ridiculous ones Trump made is the the difference. A Secretary of State that is beholding to Russia, that is not scrutiny you are hearing is is disbelief in how corrupt Trump is.
  23. I don't think the population increase will be anywhere near large enough to justify a new airport. Perhaps the terminal could be enlarged some, but the airport itself is fine. The second runway might be widened, lengthened and have ILS installed but for the most part the primary runway should be fine. Yes, a few more flights could be added but it is never going to become a major airport.
  24. Cheap is not the criteria, it is cost/benefit. You don't operate aircraft for 50 years based on their purchase price, how they are maintained plays a far more important factor. Paying a lot of money does not guarantee you a better product.
  25. As usual, you seem incapable of sticking to the subject without trying to throw in personal issues. I never said anything to promote this lady in particular, I pointed that we need to expand from recognizing just a small handful of historical figures. I never promoted any social justice cause here, yet you feel the need to label me as a social justice warrior. This country was built on the backs of many, from the farmers that cleared land to the imported labor that dug railway tunnels, yet all we ever hear about is the old drunkard John A. who took care of his patronage buddies.
