Still Going to Buy the F-35, Really?
?Impact replied to Hoser360's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
It would be interesting to know what the issue was with water wash procedures. The ejection seat, and hence the canopy, is armed by the ground crew before the pilot boards. That is of course important to ensure that whenever the aircraft is flying the flight crew will be able to escape quickly in an emergency. When the ground crew are servicing the aircraft, that system is disarmed to avoid someone activating it by accident. I don't know what happened on Friday as only the canopy had an issue, but perhaps it has something to do with when in the ground procedure things are armed. The other possibility I am thinking is that the water might have shorted out some circuits. -
Environmental activists costing Canada billions
?Impact replied to Argus's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
It is interesting you picked mining, an industry replete with examples of destroying the environment. When a company can open up, create massive tailing ponds that are highly damaging to the environment, then close and file for bankruptcy to absolve themselves of responsibility for the mess they created. Pyrite and Iron Sulfide from copper and nickel mines, bauxite from aluminum mining, cyanide from gold mining, etc. Perhaps the economics need to be modified so that investors do not get one red cent until the mine closes and they have restored the environment to a pristine state. -
Perhaps that is because the idea of a simple left/right political spectrum is bogus. What makes the Liberal party left wing? They are a corporatist party, alway have been and always will be. Socially they are far more progressive than so called big-c-Conservatives, but again that could only be vaguely associated with left-wing. It is your lumping of everything you claim to be bad as 'left wing' that makes it the biggest pejorative ever.

Ok, let's follow the European model. It should take about 10 years investment in education first in order to have graduates that are not burdened by huge debt and we can start paying them less to provide health care. Lets put the horse before the cart, not the cart of private health insurance and practitioners first to empty the treasury and make themselves rich.

Environmental activists costing Canada billions

Where do you get the year from? If I want to exploit the environment, then get the f*ck out of my way? It should take as long as it takes to ensure that your exploitation is not going to be a big burden on future generations - period. Certainly there are inefficiencies in the system, but putting an artificial date on things is bogus. Work through to make the system better, but stop with the entitlement to exploit. -
I think what is missing here is division of financial obligation for health care. The 6% escalator clause was really about the federal government trying to restore its level of commitment (over time) to health care after things were slashed in the 90's. The real question is has that level been restored, and what will it take to maintain it? Costs rise over time due to inflation, and that include both kinds of inflation: buying power of the dollar, and increase in population. If the federal government does not cover both of those through increases then in effect it is a cut, a 0% increase is not the steady state (unless we have true 0% inflation and zero population growth).

Absolutely no different than racist or denier; they are also equally descriptors. When someone uses 'leftie' to describe someone making an environmental argument then it is 100% being used as a pejorative because there is absolutely no correlation with political spectrum. It is all about frequency, and leftie is used as a pejorative about a thousand fold more often than are either racist or denier. My favourite pejorative is progressive, because I can just hear the people expectorate as they use it. Your sneer is very visible, and your disrespect is clear when you pretend otherwise. The simplistic nature of the perceived political spectrum is exactly why the term leftie is inappropriate. I consider myself to be far more a conservative than most that make that claim, but I am not at all a Conservative. Even though I voted Liberal in the last federal election for the first time in well over 20 years, I am just as much as conservative as I am a liberal. Even the qualifiers 'social' and 'fiscal' are far from precise, and are usually only used by those that want to pretend they are responsible without being hillbillies. What they fail to understand is it is not responsibility they are taking about but just the opposite. Generally those that use the term 'fiscal conservative' are really trying to avoid their financial obligations.

Sex is normal human behaviour, murdering someone is not. One of the most disturbing videos I remember is when Nodar Kumaritashvili, the Georgian luger, was killed on the Olympic bobsled track for the Vancouver games. In that case it was the ringing sound when his head struck the metal support column that I found caused a visceral reaction. One video I avoided was the maniac in Montreal with the ice pick several years go. It is hard to judge how I would react since I never saw it, but I suspect I would have found it less disturbing because the victim was already dead, so it was mostly about mutilating a corpse. The reason I choose to avoid it was less to do with how it would effect me and more about respect for the victim and his family, not wanting to glorify that vile act. I would say perhaps that if the video has the potential to be disturbing to some then common curtsey would be to post a warning about its content and allow the viewer to decide. I agree with betsy on this one.

Not true, Harper didn't have the support of Quebec. In fact federal representation by Quebec is almost perfectly in line with population. It is provinces like prince edward island that have a significant advantage federally, about 4 times that of Quebec per capita. Canada has never elected a ruling government with fewer votes than another party, while the US has elected a president with fewer votes than his opponent on 5 occasions. This time was the largest number of votes (2.9 million) that the competition than ever before, that is 2.9 million completely disenfranchised citizens. In fact there were 25 previous presidents who had won with fewer than that advantage, and now it turned into a loss. The bias always seems to tilt in favour of the Republicans, except for once when it was a 'Democrat-Republican'. It seems the system is strong biased against the Democrats.

The way you throw around 'lefties' continually like a pejorative without presenting a rational or logical argument, it is simply propaganda. I would say that is thrown around in that manner about a hundred thousand times more often than 'racist' or 'denier' ever is.

Will Canada ever become the 51st State of America?

Hey, I get 10% more bacon than my American friends. -
Predict how Canada will look like in 4 years
?Impact replied to webc5's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
It is decreasing every year. In 1960, Canadians represented 10% of the foreign born population in the US, today it is only 2%. On the other side Americans represent over 3% of the foreign born population in Canada. -

Give me a break, I've seen your swing and it doesn't matter if you measure in yards or meters, you ain't taking any strokes off. -
Lack of intellect. The perfect way to describe those that always resort to throwing around 'left' as if it were an all encompassing pejorative.

Ouch !!! Russian ambassador have been assassinated in Turkiye
?Impact replied to Altai's topic in The Rest of the World
This is what the gunman is reported to have said; "We die in Aleppo, you die here. Don't forget Aleppo! Don't forget Syria! Stand back! Stand back! Only death will take me out of here. Anyone who has a role in this oppression will die one by one. Allahu akbar, We are the descendants of those who supported the Prophet Muhammad, for jihad." -
There have been 157 faithless electors in previous Presidential elections, those that did not record their vote according to the outcome of the general election. The most in a single election was 63 in 1872 when Horace Greeley died between the November election and the Electoral College meetings to vote. The most recent was in 2004 when an anonymous (rules are set at the State level so some can be anonymous) elector voted for John Kerry's running mate for both Vice President and also President. As nobody stepped up, and obviously it had no bearing on the outcome of the election, speculation it was a mistake. There have been a few abstentions, or voting for another in the same party, the last time an elector actually switched parties was 1972 when Roger MacBride a Republican from Virginia voted Libertarian instead.

Black Rights Activist on Canadian $10 bill

Again, repeat after me, this is not a contest. -
Black Rights Activist on Canadian $10 bill
?Impact replied to Icebound's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
She established a fairly successful small business, despite the environment that made that next to impossible. The fallout from the theatre crime against her eventually destroyed that business as well. Again, learn about her before declaring her undeserving. -

The 'beautician' part is not what is relevant, it is the challenges she faced because of her skin colour and how she overcame them. Again this is not a contest, it is simply a recognition. If you think that Lincoln Alexander has not been properly recognized for his contributions, then I suggest you try and do something about it instead of complaining about Viola Desmond. -
It would be interesting to have some of the electors vote contrary to how they are expected to, and hopefully they do to send a message. It is however a pipe dream to think that the 35 or so needed to sway the election would. We are not going to know, at least for sure, until the new year so don't expect any news today.
