  1. Biden's goal of 70% first-dose vaccination by July 4th is an admission that demand for vaccination will plummet.

Yes, as cases continue to decline rapidly, many will forgo the vaccine for now.  Also, politicians like to set goals the can easily meet, and then claim success.  This is really a non-story.

"Canada probably won't reach herd immunity against COVID-19 anytime soon" (if ever)....no kidding.

From your citation (which is just an opinion column):

      Quote

In the United States, vaccine hesitancy is increasingly seen as a major and perhaps permanent barrier to herd immunity. The vaccine rollout south of the border got off to a fast start but has been slowing as time goes on and the supply of doses starts to outpace demand.

That's probably why I hear a lot of people are saying they aren't going to bother getting the second dose. Oh well.

    3. Boges

      Boges

Because of the influx of vaccines we're seeing now, the chances people will have to wait four months is unlikely.

If/when we get another Shipment of AZ, it should go 100% to provide second doses, as their reliability isn't as solid as Pfizer.

    4. OftenWrong

Let's hope you're right. Vaccinate the masses as quickly as possible, so that the herd is immune.

Then I can get back to my normal life.

Regardless, it doesn’t matter if herd immunity is achieved in the fall vs late spring.  Enough people will have been vaccinated or have immunity from being previously infected to result in low level case rates and even lower level death and hospitalization.  This story is just more panic porn.

    4. Boges

      Boges

But are enough people going to get vaccinated? Seems the rate is levelling off in the US.

I think the variants will play a factor in how effective previous infections protects one.

Up until recently it was agreed upon that most young people will handle COVID-19 rather well, in most cases. Variants have blown that theory out of the water.

  3. Ontario pledges to allow all adults to be able to book a COVID-19 vaccine appointment by the 3rd week of May.

Herd Immunity by Canada Day is likely.

    1. Boges

2-3 million doses expected each week in May. 3 million plus expected in June.

One dose probably makes milder symptoms as well.

    2. Boges

      Boges

It certainly does. But this is the first study it indicate you're less likely to transmit the virus even with only dose.

More evidence that getting as many people the first dose is more important than getting people fully vaccinated.

    3. bush_cheney2004

      bush_cheney2004

More evidence of excuses for Trudeau's epic vaccine failure.

  5. I wonder if people in Germany, Spain, Italy and France are freaking out that Canada is beating them in vaccination.

    1. Argus

      Argus

      Since we're not... no.

Canada is only giving one dose four months apart. No one in the world is waiting four months for a second dose and there's little science behind that decision.

  6. The only nations of any size or influence that have higher rates of vaccinations than Canada is Chile, the UK and the UK. If you discount people 16+ who won't be eligible for the vaccine, Canada's 1st dose vaccination is almost 30%.

16+ includes some minors/children and adults too.   Ontario just opened up vaccinations for 40+, not 16+...because there are not enough vaccines available in Canada.

    3. Boges

      Boges

Yes but Health Canada has not approved any vaccine for people 18+.

So people 18+ aren't getting it because it's not approved for them. Not because there isn't supply. So when considering vaccination rate of those eligible would be a more accurate metric.

Sort of like when Biden said he wants all people 18+ to be able to book a vaccine if they want it.

    4. bush_cheney2004

      bush_cheney2004

Provinces decide what ages to vaccinate based on approved vaccines...Canada just doesn't have enough doses...even going so far as to stagger 2nd doses way beyond the manufacturers tested/approved interval.   Playing games with numbers will not change Canada's situation and vaccine shortage.

I just watched a great interview with a doctor on Tucker Carlson. He said the issue is giving the vaccine to people that have been previously infected and already have produced antibodies.  He said those people shouldn’t be vaccinated because it can cause an autoimmune response that can lead to blood clots.

    3. Boges

      Boges

Trump got vaccinated after being infected.

I don't think there's conclusive evidence that previous infection produces immunity.

The theory is sound though. As Argus says, there are plenty of common drugs that can cause blood clots. I guess the difference with the vaccine is that you're strongly being encouraged, if not forced, to take it to try and get life back to some sense of normal.

Do you think JT just didn't accept vaccines? The issue is that manufacturing wasn't set up domestically. So they couldn't do what the US did and ban exports.
