Ontario needs to invest in EVs as a realistic Option.
Boges replied to Boges's topic in Provincial Politics in Canada
This thread is concerned with Governments (Specifically Ontario) making the necessary investments in making an electrification possible. Because it's going to have to happen. All the major economies on Earth are already moving in that direction. China actually being the leader on EV adoption. It's rather pointless to fret about the reality of buying choices of vehicles in 2035. I'm pretty confident in saying that the EV market share will be much more by the turn of the century than it is now. But even now, if you look, Green Vehicles usage is certainly growing. -

Then why are you debating what should be a trend in the Car Industry? You clearly don't car much about cars, but feel the need to feverishly debate the direction of the industry. Because it certainly not more Toyota Corollas If most people who like driving nice cars had 20k to burn, they'd buy a much nicer used car. I already highlighted why it's a much better financial proposition in a previous post. Still a very small portion of the Automotive market and not a direct competitor to any modern EV. -
I saw the video. It's extraordinarily racist. Basing your view on Black people by a Rasmussen Poll? It's like he wanted to be an Alt-Right Martyr. I wouldn't want to do business with such a person either.

You guys just go to the same Well. Again, a massive fallacy. You need make the consideration that there is almost no regular maintenance for an EV. So you can cut out the $150-$300 or more oil and other fluid changes. Brakes also don't wear down as fast because of regenerative braking. If you're in the market for a NEW car. And can only afford a $20k loan. You're not in the market for EV anyway. In fact you're not in the market for the vast majority of ICE vehicles. You live in an even smaller niche market than the EV market. Automakers don't want to make Compact cars. https://www.usatoday.com/story/money/cars/2020/07/17/discontinued-cars-2020-ford-fiesta-toyota-yaris-gm-chevrolet-sonic/5413585002/ Another big consideration for me getting an EV was the Cheat Code of being able to use Carpool lanes solo, which is law in Ontario and makes commuting much easier. -

If you can afford one and usually drive less than 200 kms a day and have a place to charge it, it is the best option. -

Again why are you not making an Apples to Apples comparison. Why would a car company sell its brand new techy car at bare bones prices with bare bones features? -

You think a Kia Rio or a Chevy Spark are gorgeous cars? Even if you thought this, they certainly aren't "generously" equipped at that price point. Then they'd be much better off to buy a better quality 5+ year old car than get into a loan for a shitbox car. Again no one has ever said the Toyota Corolla is a Gorgeous car. They aren't in the same category of cars. -

Why would a car company offer a bare-bones base model with such advanced technology as an EV? "A New Car" can maybe be had for under 20k but it's nothing special. Imagine getting a car in 20 There's no money in cheap cars anymore, the margins are too thin. A dare you to find anything special about this car. https://www.chevrolet.ca/byo-vc/client/en/CA/chevrolet/spark/2022/spark/features/capabilities/table?bodyTypeOne=1&driveTypeOne=FWD&engineOne=LV7§ion=Highlights§ion=Powertrain&styleOne=420663 The true value in the car market is used cars. People still lease cars for 2, 3 or 4 years and because of km limits they're usually in good conditional unlike former rentals. Getting a car off a lease is the best value, as opposed to buying a bare bones used car that has none of the frills most modern car owners expect. -

If you have $15k in liquid cash for a car, you'd be much better off buying a 4-year-old used car off a lease or something. But even that's hard in this market. My 2014 Hybrid can be found on Auto Trader for almost what I paid for it in 2018. -

So we're talking base model Sub-compacts? You can see my indignation when the comparison is made to a well equipped EV. -

Maybe 10 years ago. I challenge you to show me a base model compact car that's under $20k I just Googled the Hyundai Elantra, which is a trendy looking compact car, You can't get one for under 25k. The big three have gotten out of the compact car market completely. You basically can only get 4 or 5 compact sedans, all from Asian car makers. -

NEW? BS! If you're talking Used, we're not talking Apples to Apples yet. And in this market I suspect you can't get a good used car for that price right now. All modern EVs sold now have generous Warranties on the batteries. -

I disagree. We're simply talking about Goals. None of the plans by governments or car companies are binding. They illustrate an intention to move away from ICE vehicles in the next 2 decades. You have to pick a target, or nothing gets done. We're ultimately talking about an environmental measure. We're in this weird environment with cars right now. You couldn't buy a new car EV or ICE if you wanted. The COVID induced Supply-chain disruption has made getting any New Car difficult. I had the fortune of being in the new car market in the Summer of 2020 where we were in a depressed market, so supply, price and interest rates were good. Not the case now. -

In the middle of the next decade. And even then, it's only the sale of new vehicles. ICE vehicles will still be around for a good while. This is not impending. I seriously doubt our political leaders would move forward if technological fixes weren't in place. These are simply goals. Goals that will also have to come with advancements in Green Energy Technology. It'll be interesting when there's a tipping point where investment in EV tech is more convenient than finding a Gas Station that sells a super expensive fossil fuel that's heavily taxed. -

I don't see it as a sacrifice. I see it as a way to escape from the myriad of problems associated with an ICE vehicle like the wild swings in the price of gas based on things that happen far from Canada, to the constant string of problems and issues that pop up on an ICE as it gets older. I once had to pay $1,000 to repair a leaky Cooling system on a car I had that was less than 10 years old. It definitely fits well into my lifestyle. I mentioned that we're at the early adopter stage of this. There are plenty of people willing to modify their behaviours to accommodate for the benefits. -

People always talk about what happens with an EV when the power goes out. As if your average person has a few litres of gasoline in stock in case the power goes out. It's not a huge leap to see that having 30-100 kwh of energy stored in your car can be a God sent if there's a power disruption. That's way more power than an average generator holds. The solution here is not power generation, its power storage. And none of us are smart enough to predict the technologies that will evolve in the coming years to solve that problem. -

I think people get caught in this idea that transportation NEEDS! to be like it always has been for us to move past ICE vehicles. Driving an EV requires some planning for longer trips. In rural areas they aren't ideal yet. BUT as I keep saying, for a good majority of personal transportation solutions, most modern EVs suffice. Right now they're only really useful for those with Single Family homes. But if you do have a single family home with charging infrastructure, they're amazing. It's quite liberating not having to think about when you need to get gas next and at what price. -

Not if Green Technology advances along with EV adoption. Imagine we could store electricity efficiently? https://www.powermag.com/best-is-yet-to-come-for-energy-storage-technology/ It's not exactly science fiction. One of the cool things about EVs moving forward is that they could be part of the solution with the way they can feed into the grid. https://www.cbc.ca/news/science/ev-to-grid-1.6100454 -

Teslas have this Super Charger Network that make people think that it's super easy and convenient. I saw a Reel on the weekend where a Tesla owner complained that these Super Chargers don't tell if they're occupied from an app. I'm not sure if that's true or not. I know from the main normie EV Charging Apps, Flo, Chargepoint, Electrify etc. You can look up that charger and see the status. I'll concede a long-distance trip in an EV requires some planning. But there are tools out there for that. -

We're definitely still in the early-ish phase of the EV adoption Curve. Like with early users of the internet or smart phones or PCs there will be challenges but there becomes a point where development move to a more grander scale. All I really hear from pessimists is that we're not there now. No Shit! But you're full of crap if you can confidently predict if we can or can't be there in a decade. -

These are Teslas. If you buy an EV and don't have the ability to charge at home, you'll likely struggle. Those pics needs some context. -
I think people have thrown logic out the window in regards to masking. Or at least those who still choose to mask. In one breath we're being told COVID is constantly evolving and we need to keep getting Boosters to keep ahead of the curve with mutations. If that's the case we shouldn't fret being exposed to the virus. If we get it should be mild. There are people who are deathly afraid of being infected by COVID. It was serious when it was a Novel virus. 3 years in it's not terribly new to our immune systems anymore. Unless you still spend all your time at home and only go out with an N95 mask.

You do know any EV can be set up with the same outlet as a Dryer. So to say it's some pie in the sky optimism is ridiculous. How did we get Central Air in modern buildings? This is all predicting the future. If this doesn't happen, shame on all involved, because the technology is much better. Smarter people than you or I will make this happen. Or we just continue on with wildly inefficient technology because it's what we're used to. -

You don't think all major automakers aren't making plans to move their production towards EVs? Why do you think the price of Lithium has skyrocketed? With an EV future you have to re-think the way transportation works. You won't need a fleet of chargers on every few blocks. Most people will do their charging at home or close to home. Stage 2 chargers do not take a huge upfront investment to make. The biggest obstacle would be old apartments where everyone shares the same hydro costs. Residents have no problem paying for someone else keeping their apartment 18 degrees year-round, but collectively paying to charge a car may be a bridge too far. But most people thinking like that will probably be dead by 2035. -

Well with this, there's a Climate imperative that most leaders buy into. So it's not exactly the same. I think 12 years from now is a pretty good runway. And again the goal is just to say that all NEW cars sold need to be electrified. So no one is banning ICE vehicles. I think most Automakers are moving down that path already.
