Have the Feds lost their minds completely
Boges replied to blackbird's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
Environmental policy is a mess. And our relationship to the FN people is an even bigger mess. Can this stuff be used for corruption, I'm almost certain it does. But again, this is no different from plenty of instances where "spiritual rights" are asserted. -

Alright, well based on some treaties and laws that state that the land we need to build these pipelines on belongs to FN tribes. Otherwise why would we need to consult them at all. Seems you're quibbling with the idea that the FN communities in question aren't particularly concerned with the same things us White people are in getting our Dino Juice to market. They have a spiritual link to the land and would prefer not to have Oil companies trample through without their say or consideration of their belief. You may not like that, but then the alternative is just to rip up said treaties and endure the PR backlash that will cause. But this is not the Federal Government that'll ever do that. Sorry you had to find out this way. -

The same could be said for all Religious beliefs. Including those derived from the Bible. For example, the idea that life begins at conception is a completely subjective spiritual belief, but so much political pressure is used to have the views of religious people enshrined into law. -
Ontario needs to invest in EVs as a realistic Option.
Boges replied to Boges's topic in Provincial Politics in Canada
You already see this with the stupid and dreaded Check Engine Light. You can buy a device that'll tell you what the Code means, but likely can't fix it without access to advanced electronics. The good thing about EVs is that they don't need a lot of upkeep because they're basically an electronic motor, battery, four wheels and a computer. BUT the bones are still like a normal car, so you'll still need to buy the traditional car Battery, Wipers, Tires, Brakes, Washer Fluid, Cabin Air Filter. So parts will still be important, just not so many parts. My father-in-law has a hobby of flipping old cars. This hobby will be increasingly impossible, in the future, the only way to fix up an old car is with a computer. -

Not that I agree with the premise of the OP and that Indigenous culture should be considered when doing Pipeline projects. But it is quite ironic that the poster creating the thread is upset that Spirituality is being used to make decisions at a Political level, but will often cite the Bible as evidence for why a certain policy should be pursued or not. -
If this conflict isn't a Proxy War, I don't know what is. Ultimately if Repubs win in 2024, and we see a scaling back of support for Ukraine, this will get ugly. But if China and Iran are going to back Russia, I think it behooves the US to back Ukraine as much as they can. You can see simple-minded America politicians using money sent to Ukraine as a wedge issue. As if that money wouldn't be spent anyway by America's Military Industrial Complex. There's a reason why America won't prioritize Universal Healthcare, but will spend more than all their allies combined on Defense. This is kinda their thing.

You don't think all Car makers are making it next to impossible to repair your own car? All cars are portable computers now. The problem with Teslas is that they're poorly made and they don't have very many actually service locations. So some guy has to come see you. -

My insurance isn't much more than a traditional ICE vehicle. They're still ultimately insuring the value of a car, and that's a flat figure. I also suspect EVs aren't as sought after for theft as they usually get sent to the developed world. -

And Canada exports power to the US. So now you want to make the Per Capita argument that America's size makes it the greenest country, despite many parts clinging to Coal for electricity generation. -

Los Angeles is the second largest city in the country. You don't really comprehend Demographics well, do you? -

Well this is the faulty premise in your argument. See the other EV thread. Governments only do things that get them elected. If you question democracy, that's a different debate. BUT, for example, A Carbon Tax lost Liberals elections 15 years ago. Now it can get them elected and force Conservative Politicians to have some sort of Climate plan. Governments in Democracies can't unilaterally act, if Climate policy was a political loser, politicians wouldn't have them. -

How do Cobalt mines pollute. I thought your issue is with how it's extracted. How many electric devices that you happily use and clothing items you happily wear are made by people in sub-standard working conditions. You're only quibbling because Lithium Ion batteries are avenues to pursue a Greener future. -

How is per capita not a relevant statistic? I'll hang up and listen. The First world is being targeted because they pollute the most and are most capable of going Green. Which all are actually doing. -

This is true. In Canada, The US and much of Europe parties that acknowledge Climate change are being elected at a Federal level. That speaks to the customer base. I know that Car makers make decisions on design based on laws passed in California because it's the largest market in the largest economy on Earth. Who cares that Coal miners in West Virginia don't want to buy EVs. Wealthy people in California do. -

Look I'm not opposed to LNG extraction. It's a fuel we need. But it's hilarious that you're fretting over the Environmental impacts of Lithium mining because it goes towards a "Green" product. But you'll defend the environmental costs of traditional Fossil fuel extraction. -

They also have North of 1 billion people and are actually interested in foreign influence, unlike the US under Trump. Per Capita, Europe and North America are still far worse polluters. What Canada makes up 2% of Global emissions for a fraction of a percent of the Global population. -

Sweet Anecdote from 40 years ago. Fracking is a relatively new form of Gas extraction no? -

We're not talking Fuel we're talking mining of rare Earth Metals, or manufacturing. I venture to say that at least a few products you own were produced by people with sub-part working standards at the very least. -

Is any mining a pristine and safe venture? Ever checked what the Tar Sands do to the local environment? Fracking for Natural Gas has proven to do awful things to local environments. -

Or LNG as mentioned earlier in this thread. Using that as a bridge fuel for the world until Green Technology or more affordable Nuclear can be brought online would be far better for the environment than what we do now. BTW increasing LNG usage since Russia is now a Pariah state, means enriching countries like Qatar that also participate in Slave labour. -

Do you know how much stuff you purchase is made by Chinese Slave Labour? You just oppose EVs so you decide to focus on how Lithium Ion batteries are made, all while using a device that likely uses Lithium Ion Batteries. And incorrectly correlate Cobalt Mining with Lithium Mining . -

So EVs in Quebec that get charged from Hydro Power are Fossil fuel based? Nuclear Power is Fossel Fuel based? Solar and Wind?
