By North American standard, those actually seem tame. https://www.ctvnews.ca/world/resurgence-of-virus-threatens-south-korea-s-success-story-1.4979402 We are really going to have to live with this virus. People are going to get it, we need to learn how to better treat it and people need to focus more on good hygiene.

I think what bugs people is that when the police kill someone, a vast majority of the time it's swept under the rug. And the public don't end up seeing what happened. If there wasn't a video of the Floyd killing, do you really think anyone would have been fired, let alone charged? I think the crux of these protests is more police accountability. You know Police in Toronto still don't have to wear body cameras. They say it's too expensive, their budget is north of a billion dollars. OK well show some instances in the past week of gross violence by the public, there have been plenty of examples of police brutalizing peaceful protestors. And Police shouldn't be able to break doors down and not identify themselves. Especially in a country where the constitution says you can defend your property. Unlike in much of Canada.

It's a counter to the narrative that the media only cares about violence involving black people. This instance even had 45 trying to rationalize the police violence. And what do you think the cause of that is? Could it instances in history like this? https://www.theatlantic.com/sponsored/hbo-2019/the-massacre-of-black-wall-street/3217/ It's like Black people should forget that that's how they were treated in the past and now be passive like white suburbanites that have never had a police officer violently take them down for Jaywalking. https://www.cnn.com/2020/06/11/us/tulsa-police-handcuff-teenagers-jaywalking/index.html

From your article Which is what we've been doing. The only real places that aren't open now is where the whole point of the activity/task is being in close spaces with other people.

I'm outraged that the police kill anyone where it doesn't involve an armed suspect attacking them. No matter what the race. BTW protests have been largely peaceful for over a week now, So I'm not sure why you're upset. The Breonna Taylor case involved a no knock warrant. Her boyfriend had no reason to believe the people breaking into their home were cops, because they didn't have to identify. Oh and the suspect they were looking for was also in custody. So I hope you agree that No-Knock warrants should be banned.
-
You did see the media attention a 75-year-old white man who was shoved to the ground by cops got right? The outrage to all these protests speak to a level of racism that I never really could have imagined. They're not taking any of your rights away, they want more accountability for police (in their interactions with whites too). And it's working. We're seeing videos that were previously hidden showing police over-reacting to black suspects released to the public now.

America under President Trump
Boges replied to betsy's topic in Federal Politics in the United States
You know you're desperate when. . . https://www.forbes.com/sites/andrewsolender/2020/06/10/trump-campaign-demands-cnn-apologize-and-retract-poll-showing-biden-up-14-points/#6960d33934bd Trump could easily claim "Fake News" like he always does. But his plummet in popularity has clearly gotten to him. And though the CNN poll was the most damning of Trump, it's not exactly an outlier. All of these polls have Trump no closer than 6 points behind Biden. https://www.realclearpolitics.com/epolls/2020/president/us/general_election_trump_vs_biden-6247.html And while we're at it, Biden is up in these Battleground states. https://www.realclearpolitics.com/epolls/2020/president/wi/wisconsin_trump_vs_biden-6849.html https://www.realclearpolitics.com/epolls/2020/president/fl/florida_trump_vs_biden-6841.html https://www.realclearpolitics.com/epolls/2020/president/mi/michigan_trump_vs_biden-6761.html https://www.realclearpolitics.com/epolls/2020/president/mn/minnesota_trump_vs_biden-6966.html -
But instances where Cops are caught on film killing someone who either wasn't violent or ceased to be violent when the cops had the upper hand are what's causing these protests. It's irrelevant if Black are more likely to be involved in violent crime that they'd be violent when encountering the police. It's assuming the cause of those deaths by cop. It doesn't implicitly state that all or even a majority of the deaths involving the police were a result of violence towards the cops. You would have to present that fact first. You could claim the Breonna Taylor was because of a violent interaction with the cops. You have plain-clothes cops breaking into a house looking for a suspect. They didn't identify themselves as cops so her boyfriend exchanged fire thinking his apartment was being broken into. But it's 100% the cops fault she died.
-
Really? You have a fact that more Whites are killed by the Cops. Then it's pointed out that Blacks are actually killed at a higher rate. So then it HAS to be because they're involved in more violent crime, which justifies why they're killed at a higher rate. Which is highly racist. Facts can be cherry-picked to fit a narrative.
-
Racism isn't an objective thing. It's 100% subjective based on your perspective. I'm sure in the 60's people thought that support for segregation wasn't racist. And there were racists who believed their opinion was based on facts. Which is why people that think these protest are bad are on the wrong side of history. The history of systemic racism in the US can't be denied. The systemic racism of the past creates the poverty that creates the crime noted today. But even then the racism is factually obvious. Black and Latinos are incarcerated for Drug crimes at a much higher rate than white. But they don't do drugs at any higher a rate. All the more reason to defund the police. I notice you don't include the assault of Martin Gugino.
-
There are systematic reasons for that. But it's when you see a black person that isn't being violent that gets murdered, that's when you get BLM protests. Going on 2 weeks now. Seems a lot of effort for something that's a fabrication. Why should I have to convince someone who's being willfully ignorant of something? You're not black, you can't comment on a black person's experiences with police. You deny racism then say something like that. Dallas, Texas has a black Police Chief. Toronto did up until he resigned this week. Keep being on the wrong side of history.

Wet Got Bigger Problems Than George Floyd
Boges replied to a topic in Federal Politics in the United States
Does that justify what happened? -
1) If more whites are killed by blacks, then that speaks to the idea that police need to be checked. See the gentleman in Buffalo. That's caused a bit of a commotion. I'm outraged by cops committing violence to all people. 2) Blacks are incarcerated at a higher rate than Whites and are killed at a higher rate based on their representation in the population. 3) This is where this debate will circle the drain. Racist will continue to contend that more black are put in jail and killed because they somehow deserve it, or that they're more violent than others. Those aren't debates that can be won or lost with facts, they're just feelings because for decades black and indigenous communities have been put into cycles of poverty by past generations. Cops don't reduce crime, reducing poverty reduces crime. 4) Who cares what you or I think? This is the side of history you find yourself on. The more you want to contend that racism doesn't really exist the more you look like a dinosaur. You'll look like people that disagree with Bi-Racial Marriage, Abortion, Gay Marriage, Legalized Weed etc etc etc.
-
The reason George Floyd is being martyred, is because he was so obviously murdered by a police officer. He wasn't a threat, he was unarmed and he was handcuffed, yet he still ended up getting killed. It's more of a straw that broke the camel's back regarding this police brutality thing. And unlike in past years, there's clearly an appetite for hearing African-Americans out in regards to police brutality.

Without a single cite. You're all over the place here. You've gone from Sweden and Restaurants to elective surgeries.
-
It would be the main indicator of an impending crisis. In late March the level of hospitalizations were increasing exponentially, had it continued to increase the system would have been overwhelmed.
-
Agreed. I'm not sure why that's the last thing mentioned. https://www.cp24.com/news/ontario-reports-fewer-than-300-new-cases-of-covid-19-for-third-day-in-a-row-1.4977794
-
You'd have to give certain examples, where it really made no sense and caused public harm. Elective surgeries were shut down, for a time. But I was able to get doctor's appointments. But they were certainly slowed down due to Social Distancing. 100% some collateral deaths happened because the Healthcare system focused on COVID-19 to the detriment of other services. But had those services proceeded without care taken for the pandemic, more could have died. Lead? That's abstract. I see the Premiere of Ontario and public health officials talking every day. #45 was too for a time until he started telling people they should chug bleach.
-
It made sense if you were preparing for an overwhelming of the Healthcare system. Even if X Healthcare service wasn't near any place where COVID was being treated, having people congregate in waiting rooms and in close contact may contribute to the spread of the disease. Do you know that for certain? Out of all healthcare services I can imagine, Mental health is one thing that can certainly be done virtually. Family doctors have moved that way. How do you think it's being misinterpreted? I think focusing on actual positive cases isn't what should be focused on, but it's always the top line item. Articles bury the Hospitalization figures but that's what is most important when gauging the severity of the outbreak. What would you have political leaders do? It's a damned if you do, damned if you don't scenario. If you don't trust the numbers, then how can you accurately evaluate how governments have reacted?
-
So what would a more reliable interpretation be? That because Sweden didn't see a mass extinction, they did this better because they could keep some restaurants open?
-
The only countries, that aren't micro-states, that have worse death rates than Sweden are Italy, Spain, the UK and Belgium. I'm pretty sure Brazil, Russia and China have worse rates too, but their numbers aren't really reliable.
