It reminds me of the legislation in the states that shut down horse farming operations for meat. The closed the local industry because, people like horses more than cows. The primary shipping destination was asia... so it was bringing money back too.

I want an accountable government. If we don't know what they are doing, how can we hold them accountable? -

That is a generalization good sir. I was not trying to insult your well being or mental state Hey now, I never said there weren't merits of no minimum wage. I could use servants. What makes this funnier is that even the CBC vote compass put me right of centre between Liberal and Conservative. When it comes down to it. Conservatives label everyone "left" who doesn't fit their mold. -

I enjoy the personal attack. Thank you. I also find it hilarious that the right wingers consider me a leftist. Anything left of crazy right is a leftist, apparently. Those I know find it equally humorous knowing me a little better than random internet ideologues. Conservatively speaking, I'm a leftist revolutionary with such progressive ideas like investing in grass roots businesses and lowering small business taxes but, not subsizing large and healthy corporations/industries. Might as well call me a communist and put me on trial. -

Show me the 90+% in agreement, please If people make more money, they can spend it and generate other jobs. You can't spend money and generate economic activity if you have very little or none. Lowering the worker wage provides a short term boost to jobs which is negated in the long term as people have less money to spend into the economy. Reducing employment available in the long term. This was a large factor of the great depression. If people can't buy products, no one will be paid to make them. Raising worker wage provides a short term stall in hiring which is overcome as people have more money to spend into the economy spinning off more jobs. Long term job creation. The problem is that it is way more complicated to show long term effects in a manner that black and white thinkers can understand and accept. What formal business education do you have Tim? I'm just curious. I have a degree in Business Administration, double major with Computer Engineering. I don't feel that you are fully explaining your reasoning adequately on the matter. Anyone with economy in mind knows that long term is more important than short term when considering the health of a country's economy. I am not forming my opinion by ideologically saying that we need to pay people more regardless of market conditions. That would be absurd. I'm saying that people who don't have money can't spend it. Without spending, the economy suffers. That is a fact good sir. A reasonable(up for argument) wage should be set to ensure that people with jobs have money to generate economic activity(more jobs) through consumption. Is generating economic activity part of leftist ideology now? who knew. Back on topic, explain your personal logical process where you come to the conclusion that climate change is not a problem and whether we should do anything about it. Maybe I missed the post early on. -

There is no consensus like you claim there to be. Sorry. You Have To Have Money To Spend It If no one is spending. Jobs are lost over time. I am far from them. I compromise. Ideology does not. -

Do you have a source to verify this? I will cite the great depression. -> People with lower wages will buy fewer products and services. -> When fewer products are being bought, jobs are lost in all related activities (R&D, Marketing, Customer Service, etc). -> People without jobs definately can't buy anything, the cycle worsens. Our entire economy is built on this concept of consumerism. Those who make very little or nothing can't consume. If you pay them more, they can consume more. In turn creating economic activity and jobs for what they consume. Anyone with a broader understanding of business and economics beyond 'ideology' can see that fact in action. The incandescent lightbulb has been engineered to fail. 100 years ago you could get bulbs that lasted 2000 hours. Why is it after 100 years they are worse? The incandescent bulbs only last 1000hours.... inspite of patents of 25 year designs and a 100 000 hour patent? The more something breaks the more it has to be replaced. Planned obsolescence. Making us consume more than we really need to, and destroy our environment even more. I suppose I have just argued for lower wages when taking the environment into consideration. If we destroy the economy by paying everyone but the top end very little, then we can't consume nearly as much and even more jobs will be lost. When we have no money, no one will buy unnecessary toxic products like cellphones, microwaves, televisions and the C02 emissions creating them will be saved. Hurrah! -

I never refuted your position about conservatives being driven by ideology. I agree! Ideology is not rational, it's a belief. It is closer to faith than science. To follow ideology instead of analysing a situation and applying the best policy to solve it is to be willfully ignorant of reality. Common Example: Problem = "There are too many poor and unemployed people" Common Conservative Solution: "Lower the minimum wage to create jobs" Result: More poor people are created. This is exactly what is happenining in the climate change debate. I believe it isn't a problem as my ideology says so, therefor it is not a problem. Most of the plans are garbage. I never said they weren't. Especially the conservative pushed ones like pumping CO2 underground slowing it's release. Just putting the problem on future generations. The most promising plans are in changing how we create and use fuel. One plan I saw that looked promising for fuel creationwas using algae to produce oil. Carbon neutral because the algae grows taking carbon out of the air. I remember reading that If 1/7th of the U.S. corn crop was turned into growing this algae the U.S. could be energy self sufficient. -

Absolutely. The Scientist who makes 60-90k a year is doing this to keep their job. Not big corporations with over 100,000,000,000,000 at stake in future oil purchases alone... Yep. Must be the scientists. -

Canadian, American religious divide

You do make a valid point. I was thinking more along the lines of how embarassing it is to have someone like Michelle Bachmann being considered a serious contender at one point. -

This is unfortunate. I don't mind if a politician is religious. But, I am glad that we don't have the circus that is Republican primaries in Canada. -
I'm sure he ran a socialist charities too. A BUSINESSMAN WITH A HEART? IMPOSSIBLE! The only businesses run by anyone other than conservatives are charities and hippy paraphenelia.

Bell and Rogers received subsidies to put those lines in place... They should pay them back before they think of doing any more gouging of the competition.

This is a huge sham. The true play behind this is trying to eliminate competition using the internet as a media delivery medium. The internet is the only data connection you need. You do not need a separate TV connection. You do not need a separate Telephone connection. The internet can provide all three dirt cheap, transfered as data. But you need bandwidth. Limit bandwidth, kill the competition. This is an example of the heavy weights abusing their power, largely built on public subsidies/investment, to keep innovative delivery methods out of the marketplace.
