Ontario Teachers Strike
MiddleClassCentrist replied to socialist's topic in Provincial Politics in Canada
This is actually true, They were offered a large wage increase(16% over 4 years I believe) and they turned it down in favour of trying to get better working/classroom conditions. -
The MSM view of Muclair's position on Dutch disease is laughable because it was only criticized for coming from a socialist party. But anyone who has taken economics 101 could have pointed out the idiocy that the Conservative government was spewing to protect their big oil supporters. After waiting for his comments to subside and drop to the back of our minds as Canada gets a RECORD TRADE DEFICIT to $2.34-billion in July. Now... yes now... apparently the MSM and Conservatives understand that simple fact of "oh yeah, a high dollar does kill exports."

But crops can't grow without water, and do poorly in extreme heat. Tipping the scale to either extreme, hot or cold, does not help us. -

You know it can be proven by using simple statistics and math, right? http://www.cbc.ca/news/world/story/2012/08/04/climate-change-real-scientist.html Translation: The general right wing nut is too stupid to not buy into the corporate propaganda that targets any potential flaw to question the entire process. So we'll use simple math to do it instead. *Counts number of hot days per year over last century*, *counts dry spells over last century by year* result -> "see dimwits... it's right there!" I don't know why they bother because the willfully ignorant will just pull the "You made up those stats/data" -

You need to recognize that the oil industry still has over $100,000,000,000,000 of oil money left to work on based on today's price of oil and "proven reserves". But yes, that group of scientists trying to save the planet making paltry salaries compared to most people in the oil industry. THEY ARE THE ONES WITH THE TRUE CONSPIRACY. Do you under stand how ludicrous your stance sounds? Scientists are peer reviewed and based on stats/data collection against a hypothesis. New data is received, hypothesis changes. Oil industry throws out propaganda to confuse people so that they don't have to change their business model by starting "grass roots" movements totally funded by big oil to push concepts like "hydrogen fuel" to kill the electric car movement. I'm sorry, but siding with corporations is not just stupid. It's suicidal. They only exist to generate money... not ensure that humans exist in 100 years to enjoy it. -

OK. Your reference to astrology is ludicrous. Why are you buying into the big corporate agenda of "prevent change so our business models need not incur the cost of change"? In the past there were mass extinctions. We know this. The ocean has gone stagnant before. We know this. If the ocean goes stagnant, hydrogen sulphide producing bacteria grow rampantly. FYI - Hydrogen Sulphide is toxic. We are having an impact that could cause a mass extinction... we need to change what we are doing. -
http://www.thecomedynetwork.ca/Shows/TheDailyShow It's in there near the beginning for Sept 6th episode. They had PRE-SCRIPTED the accepting of the motion on the teleprompter. Jon Stewart makes fun of it pretty well. Even though 2/3rds were required to pass. They did it by listening and it was very very close.

Stupidity of Ontario voters continue
MiddleClassCentrist replied to Tilter's topic in Provincial Politics in Canada
I didn't know that. Did the media report that as much as they reported someone sleeping on the job? All I remember ever hearing about was someone(UNION MEMBER ARGLE BARGLE BARGLE) falling asleep on their job . Not that they had a medical condition. effing MSM. -

Ontario has lots of problems, depending on the outlook you take, the solutions come down to either making poor people pay more, making wealthy pay more, or making the middle class pay. All the while reducing services. Since the wealthy control the system and own the propaganda machines of the main stream media, they aren't going to pay until the quality of life lowers to the point of another general strike. The poor can't really protect themselves but, it not currently popular policy to make them pay, so they aren't going to pay. The middle class can't really protect themselves and do have a bit of spare money, we are the ones paying to keep this system that puts more and more money into the hands of a few going while increasingly needing to support more people at the bottom. -
http://www.thecomedynetwork.ca/Shows/TheDailyShow I like the Daily Show because it's making fun of stupid things politicians/fox news does it often has more truth hidden in it than regular broadcasting. Now, I haven't seen good math/statistical analysis from the right to show that their general path (because they don't seem to quantify their policies) is the correct direction. Do they not like math anymore? I mean, simple math proves global warming by counting the number of hot days in a year and number of days over a certain threshold. You can track that abortion is a good public policy because of the lowering crime rate associated with the year it becomes legal. Are they abandoning analysis and relying on emotion, ideology and marketing tricks? I suppose that's fair, isn't that how Obama won? Hope and Change (that will never happen).

It NEVER happens in the private sector. (lol) It's happens everywhere, only ideologues with an agenda push it. -
Organic Food not better for you
MiddleClassCentrist replied to Boges's topic in Health, Science and Technology
Technically we should let food prices rise to lower population increases, it the world had cheap access to birth control, it would work. We currently support a population based on 100% productivity/yield, which is a mistake. -

By-Elections are won by having motivated voters. Teachers and labour are pretty motivated to keep Dalton from a Majority right now. -

Non-organic tomatoes do taste bad. http://news.discovery.com/earth/supermarket-tomatoe-gene-taste-120628.html It's the mutations to make them perfectly homogenous in colour that do it. Organic or homegrown please -

Yes, corporations find loopholes to avoid paying people what they deserve in the absence of a union. -
“This is unprecedented,” she said. “Even (Prime Minister)Stephen Harper when his government created back to work legislation for Air Canada workers didn't try to deny the right to arbitrate settlements,” she said. “This putting Students First Act is really putting democracy last. “It's dangerous, it denies the right to strike, denies the right to an arbitrated settlement and denies the right to any legal challenge.” http://www.brantfordexpositor.ca/2012/09/03/labour-day-activities Has Dalton flown under the radar in his swing from centre to ultra right wing stance on labour? Lack of arbitration, not even with a completely biased arbitrator like the Conservatives do? Interestingly enough, his stance isn't homogeneous in application. Right now it only seems to apply to Highschool and Elementary teachers. College teachers only had to accept a wage freeze and kept their grid and other benefits Dalton is attacking for the Elementary and Secondary workers. Why the double standard? College teachers have it even easier, they don't have to care if their students don't show up or fail. No idiot parents to deal with...

Ontario Teachers Strike

"A New York City charter school earned headlines in 2008 for its plans to pay teachers $125,000 in exchange for working longer hours and assuming additional duties. A voluntary program instituted in Washington, D.C., last year could raise total compensation for some teachers to $140,000 Some teachers in Wisconsin and Illinois are also reportedly as handsomely compensated along with other states. According to the NEA, about 1% of teachers are paid that well." http://bit.ly/TTg2pq Average teacher salaries are worse. In many areas, you don't need a degree, and that brings the average pay way, way down. Teachers in the states are also often PAID to coach teams and run after school programs. Just saying. -

The Employer standards act mandates that they should get overtime pay, thanks to unions Mike Harris changed it to 44 hours though, instead of 40 I believe. But still that's a solid 6 hours of overtime they are entitled to by law that they are missing out on. They just need to suck it up and tell their employer. The electrician specialist could easily make over 90k a year if he had a drive to do so. GOOD people are in demand with those quals. Supervisor, not so much. But, the job is pretty easy. -
Rethinking Delivery of Education
MiddleClassCentrist replied to CPCFTW's topic in Provincial Politics in Canada
This particular issue irks me. The public board bends to the will of a few old farts who remember going to that school. Meanwhile, the Catholic board doesn't have as many schools and keeps putting up new ones to attract non-catholic students to their shiny new building. By the time the public board finally gets to close a school, there can be two catholic schools servicing a neighbourhood and no need for a public school anymore. What irks me the most about this, is that Catholic boards run huge deficits to get these schools built and then McGuinty government just keeps forgiving their debt. Public school parents are paying for Catholic education, make no mistake about it. -
