Ontario Teachers Strike
MiddleClassCentrist replied to socialist's topic in Provincial Politics in Canada
Almost everyone with a degree + professional certification is doing better than most. Many bitch about it. Let's claw back everyone down to the median wage that includes high school drop outs and delinquents of various sorts. Let's be fascist about it. -

Teacher's are being harassed in their daily life. This is ridiculous. I don't envy them. Why would anyone want to become a teacher just to be hated because you chose the profession? Funny, how a Toronto Sun article actually talks about it. I wouldn't have expected it. But, the Toronto Star has been borderline slanderous in their reporting. So... strange indeed. http://www.torontosun.com/2012/08/18/fighting-anti-teacher-blowback -

IF it's a small business, then yes. If it's a big business in a market of diminishing competitors as they are bought up (majority of markets) then the consumer pays (read: tax payer). In the end, we end up paying. Regardless of whether it is for profit of rich people(private sector), or to provide a service to regular people(Public sector). Companies that should fail receive government funding (GM), healthy companies receive government subsidies and breaks and then just leave the country(Caterpillar). Don't give us that silly "private sector" utopia that doesn't exist bull crap. -
Your child is supposed to be in some sort of programming. All you need to do is notify that you are home schooling. You can follow the curriculum on your own... or teach crazy myths like the how world was created only 6000 years ago. It's entirely up to you. I wouldn't pull a high school student out for a year though. IMO That's a disservice because the options available in Ontario High Schools are much wider and taught by specialists. Computer Engineering, Physics, etc.

They have a massive tunnel through the core of the planet in Total Recal. Wasn't that film fairly realistic? -

It's actually a mixed blessing for young teachers. Retirees went from 20 days to 50 days after 3 years of retirement. They were 90 days for 3 years, then 20 days for eternity. So they might get an LTO position... but, their supply days are going to be fewer. -
Hey Toronto has made International News.

Maybe just a spike in it. Toronto made news again recently for the urination assault that was filmed. Some guy pissed on a homeless boy who had passed out with people laughing in front of the Eaton Centre. -

It's going to be smoke and mirrors, or colour me surprised. The king of closed government and lack of accountability will ensure that this is just a facade with no teeth. I'd like to thank Thomas Mulcair for having the guts to bring this issue to light so that Harper actually took some time to give it lip service. I hope most of the sheeple realize that. -

I've met entire families of well rounded gifted children now that I think about it. Even their "black sheep" was just being a bit rebellious by choosing a career as a trademen but, that one was really bright too. Home life/habit building is many times more important than school. Teachers can only work with what they get. But, that isn't to say our system is good. Ontario focuses way too much on the students who will be on long term disability for a lifetime... with few resources going to the students who could accomplish something novel... -

I have. One who was taught to learn for himself and not wait for others to hold his hand. One who didn't get lazy and just stop working because it was easy, who asked for more material. Gifted doesn't mean they aren't lazy This guy was writing algorithms in High School that made my university work look bad! All because he learned how to learn for himself and to ask for/seek out more information on his own using school resources. That being said, most of the gifted people I knew wasted their lives (so far) for one reason or another. I always thought they'd be doctors or contribute something to society... Funny things that you think of as a kid. -

or maybe(hopefully) he's realizing that the extreme corporatist, anti consumer, anti labour, anti general citizen agenda is why Canadians have swung to the left? Corporations can only buy you votes when the population remains ignorant of how your policies are for corporations, not people. -

Everyone has a right to demand more but, TNT was just pointing out that there are better ways of doing it. I believe teachers would be happy to get what they currently have but, that is not what McGuinty is doing. He is clawing back previous agreements at the expense of younger teachers who have a higher amount of student debt thanks to Mike Harris increasing tuition... -
Human Kinetics and other associated degrees are a joke. It's where the athletes go who can't actually maintain grades in real programs. They get credits for showing up and playing volleyball... wtf? It's like me showing up and getting Information Technology credits for playing video games lol. You overestimate the skill required. Human kinetics/Kinesiology is to the Medical profession as Security Officers are to the RCMP. I'm not saying they are not important, when the internet/electronics die from a solar flare we'll need someone to run letters around but, I would want someone who is proven to be skilled in Mathematical thinking teaching my children Math... Just saying

There had been a good article about how teacher unions have a public relations problem. What they should be doing is showing what they actually do. Majority of teachers do other things than teach, a select few who make them look bad don't. They coach mutiple teams or run multiple clubs (Depending of whether they are an athletic teacher or not), all optional and completely ignored when looking at compensation. Also, Ontario ranks among the highest in the world for quality of education. "The education we provide is among the best in the World. Why is McGuinty trying to target people who are doing their job well?" -
Yeah, I Think you missed the complete an utter lack of demonstration fo deeper mathematical understanding and only having a phys ed degree (which is a joke to begin with)

Windows Phone or Android

You can when it is entirely the "fault" of the user. I mean, products aren't meant to be dropped. Apple is really good at moving the blame to the consumer, since the average consumer understands very little about HOW the tech works, they buy it. "You aren't holding the phone correctly." (Lies, Apple implemented an antenna poorly) "The heat is within specifications and is only uncomfortable when playing games for a long time: (Or maybe they didn't implment proper cooling in their product? maybe?) "Your phone is running slower because newer apps take more power" (Mostly lies, phones run slower because patches increase the overhead required for the phone to run, refresh it back to the original and it will run just as fast as it did the day you bought it) It's all part of planned obsolesence. Apple has always been a subtle pusher of it. Attempted to take out replaceable batteries, inability to fix the tech on your own, inability to upgrade your hardware, inability to install new software on older hardware, etc, etc. It's why my wife's iBook couldn't access the internet when it was 3-4 years old... It's why iCloud doesn't work on any Mac with Snow leopard (which is only a few years old!) even while the competition (Dropbox) Works on anything, including linux. Any other company takes heat for their failures and often admits they are working on a solution. Apple could sell 200sq ft condo's and tell everyone that it's not that they made the condo's small, it's that you don't know how to efficiently use space. iZombies would buy them. The Lightbulb Conspiracy is an interesting film about planned and forced obsolescence. Discussing how lightbulbs used to have 2000hour lives and were shortend to 1000hours to sell more. The scary part is for modern technology. Companies have designed their printers to shutdown and fail after a certain number of prints with a simple counter chip. Unless you are the engineer of the product, you have no clue what is purposefully going wrong with your tech and will have 0 chance of ever finding it. Slowly increase drain on the processing power, poor reception, etc. -
I'd teach them how to use an android device and save the school system millions. ... Or how about just using CHART PAPER?

There is something to be said for moving processes from "Deep thought" to "instinctive". Children rely WAAAAAAAAAAAY too much on calculators because their elementary teachers don't understand the math themselves and get caught up in these strange teaching methods. If you can't do 12 x 7 in your head, you might not fail elementary math, but you'll get your arse handed to you in High school relying on the calculator for all of the answers. The Chinese whoop Canadian students at math, and they use the traditional method. All of these other methods are just garbage introduced so that someone could climb the totem poll and get a better job... nothing more. Note: If the person teaching your seminar does not have an advanced degree in math, it is useless. Just FYI. Wife has been on one lead by someone with a PHYS ED DEGREE (LOLOLOLOL)

You start off being dishonest, so I guess it's a good setup for the rest of your comments. lol, unless I was a teacher then all of a sudden you'd care. I just happened to like my teachers and know quite a few to know that their job is not all sunshine and rainbows like some people paint it. 1 - Ok, but how would you implement a system where teachers worked up to 6 weeks a year based on a static school year? I'd like to hear that one.2 - You are being dishonest here, PD days included into time off? Only in conservatopia. Bay street banksters get like the entire year off if PD days, where teachers have to sit through meetings, seminars, presentations and workshops all day, counts as vacation. Most people DON'T... until it's too late. I'm not painting the teacher pension as a bad thing. Just that it's easy to criticize when you spend your money on big screen TV's and new cars and living close to downtown instead of saving for retirement(most of the people my age do). They then look to what someone else has later in life and completely disregard the fact that the individual did infact contribute a large portion of income overtime, starting from their date of hire (23-25yrs old if it is their first career). MSM is not reporting the facts. IT is reporting McGuinty's claims. You just happen to like the claims. -

Some designers like to put the glass right up to the edges so that the screen is more likely to crack. They claim it is for looks but it is designed to break. -> buffer from glass to edge -> edge that sticks up above the glass to absorb shock/prevent contact a bit. Noticeably missing in some products that I notice smashed everywhere I go. -
Windows Phone or Android

IT always makes me wonder why Nintendo and Sony haven't caught on to the imminent (IMO) death of their portables. The mass market doesn't want quality games with developed story. They want dinky games that monkeys can play. I haven't found a game on any portable device that wasn't anything other than a time waster. Alas, I am someone who enjoys story line and character building, and strategic games that require some thought and planning. Not just point and "flick". (I do find angry birds mildly entertaining though) -
Windows Phone or Android

All that tells me is that iPhone is for old people who have more money and have aged enough to have a degree. But being the caddy of phones (for old people) will work against it in the future. And that corporations prefer locked down devices (o big surprise there). When my wife supply teaches, the teachers have iPhones but the students are obviously more Android based. Good on Apple for getting the largest and most able to spend money group locked in. Long-term, they will have to mitigate the stigma of being "mom's phone".
