...and Nunavut. They are consensus governments, though, which work well for them.

It works for Nebraska because 48% of Omaha, 50% of Lincoln, and everywhere else is strongly conservative/Republican. It probably would work for, say, Alberta. It probably would not work on a federal level.
-
The problem with nonpartisan representation is that it will always default to partisan representation... it's human nature. You can make political parties illegal, but then they would just call themselves "caucuses" in the legislature. The Nebraska State Legislature is the only nonpartisan unicameral legislature in the US. The unicameral is great... and the nonpartisan is a great idea, however, the political parties always announce "recommendations" for who people should vote for, so in effect, it cancels it out. One good thing about going that far though is that it forces voters to educate themselves on the candidates before they vote.

Federal Elections 2011: Seat Predictions
nittanylionstorm07 replied to August1991's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
A terribly written part with respect to Quebec. There is no way the Liberals are "in" that many ridings with respect to the BQ. It's BQ vs. NDP not BQ vs. Liberals in this election. -
How are the Libs and NDP Selling out the West?

Avg population per riding from most underrepresented province to most overrepresented province: Alberta 133,030 British Columbia 125,302 Ontario 124,225 Quebec 105,148 Manitoba 88,047 Nova Scotia 85,498 New Brunswick 75,127 Saskatchewan 74,409 Newfoundland and Labrador 72,985 Northwest Territories 43,429 Prince Edward Island 35,388 Yukon 34,246 Nunavut 32,900 To me, it doesn't seem like Quebec is your problem... although it's typical for Tories/Westerners to bash on Quebec if they breathe wrong. -
Soooo less choice is better than more choice? Isn't that the opposite of what Conservatives supposedly believe about the economy? (I tend to think they don't, they'd rather have monopolistic corporations or a system that leads to them without understanding the consequences)

Diuceppe recruits Parizeau!

Looks like Helene Laverdiere will be the next MP from the riding of Laurier--Sainte-Marie -
IRV is where you rank your electoral choices on the ballot like this: Ballot ------ Candidate A 2 Candidate B 4 Candidate C 1 Candidate D 3 Then when results come through, the following is similar to what occurs: Round 1: Candidate A 22% Candidate B 31% Candidate C 14% Candidate D 33% Round 2: Candidate A 34% Candidate B 32% Candidate D 34% Round 3: Candidate A 46% Candidate D 54% Elected: Candidate D They can sponsor bills as they wish and sit on committees. They just cannot make important governmental decisions. This safety measure prevents governments who might lose a "bad" cabinet member from adding him/her to the proportional list and later staying in government.

The best system is honestly a combination, with percentages something like this: 450 district/riding seats determined by instant runoff voting. 50 proportional seats by national party vote. For a party to win a seat, they must have 2% of the vote. Members elected based on this method must remain backbenchers unless no one in their party wins a riding seat. This is what I want in the US, Canada could have reduced numbers based on population.

Conservatives like you are the reason why we aren't technologically more advanced by 1000 years. -
Federal Elections 2011: Seat Predictions
nittanylionstorm07 replied to August1991's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
lol delusional Tories. Why do you fail to understand that this is a completely new situation? -
I really think at this point Duceppe is going to lose his own riding. That's going to be the most amazing part of this campaign outside of the destruction of the liberals. Besides, Helene Laverdiere has a pretty impressive resume.

NDP the only party capable of forming a majority
nittanylionstorm07 replied to WWWTT's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
Oh yeah the Tories are about as wiped out in QC as the Libs... not as bad as the Libs though. -

Trudeau is the only Liberal I have winning a seat in Quebec... the NDP are about to take it to them and the Bloc. -
The Lib Dems and NDP are only similar because they are both third parties currently. They do not have similar views. NDP is more similar to Labour.

I love that random 181 number for the Tories in the electionalmanac lol

I just decided to go take a gander at Mr. Duceppe's riding and his previous electoral results: In Laurier--Sainte-Marie: Duceppe: 2004- 60.1% 2006- 54.7% 2008- 50.2% In 2008: Duceppe- 50.2% Liberal (Caron)- 18.33% NDP (Gregoire)- 17.11% Apply the following % swing to the riding: (NDP 12.2 to 36 (+23.8) BQ 38.1 to 31 (-7.1) Lib 21.7 to 16 (-5.7) Duceppe- 43.1% NDP (Laverdiere)- 42.13% Lib (Allard)- 12.11% Starts looking very interesting....

Could you imagine if Gilles Duceppe was upset in his riding by an NDP candidate? They should really just be discounted at this point. A better way to go would be to average the seat projections produced by all of the polling firms at this point.
