  1. What does "equity pushers" mean, and what is your problem with it?
  2. It's certainly hateful to smear a whole cultural group. (See my examples above. Are they hateful?) I think the question is ... Is it acceptable behaviour for a Senator? She immediately got kicked off the Senate Aboriginal committee. She still refused to remove the racist letters. Scheer read part of a letter, called it "racist" and booted her out of the Conservative Party. She still refused to remove the racist letters. So now she's finally lost her job. I recall several incidents in the last year or so in Ontario where people lost their jobs for racist behaviour, usually because they got caught on video - flying a confederate flag on his truck at his worksite in Hamilton (fired) - ranting hateful racist words at a family in a parking lot, in a company truck (fired) - Cop posts hateful screed on Facebook along with his pic in uniform ('retired') Etc. Employers generally don't want the bad publicity of being associated with blatant racist behaviour, and they are free to fire them. Lynn Beyak was an employee of the people of Canada. Most of us do not want to be associated with the racism persistently displayed on the government-funded website we pay for. So now she's fired. No biggie. Happens all the time. What's surprising is that it took this long, but that's government.
  3. It's quite apparent that she doesn't represent all of the people in her region, only the 'good Indians' who praise the residential schools, give up their status, treaty entitlements and Aboriginal rights and become 'just Canadians'. She posts letters from Canadians full of racist stereotypes. She thus dismisses, disparages and degrades a significant portion of the population in her region. I wonder what would happen if other Senators likewise persistently attacked and disparaged one cultural group in their region and posted racist letters against them, and refused to remove them? 'All the ragheads are drunk and lazy welfare bums', etc. 'All the chinks are thieves' Stuff like that. (You know you've beard it from some Canadians.) Seems to me that Senators who would persistently support such racial slurs wouldn't be people we want representing our country in the Senate. She validated such racial slurs by refusing to remove the letters.Seems to me that rises to the level of 'inciting and promoting hatred against a whole group of people', and that is a crime in Canada.
  4. You have provided no evidence of that. Ban the predatory developers and realtors. But what I do with my own rooms is not your business.
  5. That concern arises from the thousands of developers and realtors abusing Airbnb by purchasing or building many units or condos to use as Airbnb STR's. Cities are trying to regulate that by e.g. limiting STR's to e.g. 20% of condo units in a development. Just because developers and realtors are abusing Airbnb is no reason to "ban" Airbnb! Many people, including seniors, Airbnb a few rooms in their house because it helps them afford to stay in their house, and make use of extra rooms when not needed for family or personal guests. They shouldn't be punished because developers and realtors are abusing the Airbnb system.
  6. Awwwwwwww ... lol New cheaper ways of doing things always piss off the more expensive old ways. That's just progress that allows more people more affordable options. I think hotel workers and cab drivers are pretty exploited too. It's up to municipalities to regulate short term rentals. The creepy developers with many listings taking advantage of Airbnb are the problem, and are being addressed in some cities. If you provide meals to guests - ie, bed and BREAKFAST - you have to have kitchen inspections, etc. Most homeowners just renting a couple of rooms now and then don't want to bother with that. They do provide a welcome and affordable option.
  7. PEI Conservatives seem to be of the (ironically) old fashioned 'progressive' type - ie red Tories. They are tolerable. Scheer and his gang of fundamentalists, corporate welfare oil promoters and white supremacists are not progressive in any way, and not tolerable. IMO. Unfortunately, we have a lot of voters who think their job is to bet on a winner. That's why we keep getting dumb majority governments with puppet MP's jumping up and down to vote the way their leader tells them and caving to corporate (donor) pressure. I say ... break the cycle of stupidity and waste: Don't vote Liberal or Conservative. Make political parties work together in our interests.
  8. White supremacists are just racist white supremacists. They don't want non-white people in Canada. They don't speak for all white people. You don't speak for me.
  9. Another host abusing Airbnb: https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/ottawa/condo-owner-violated-airbnb-ghost-hotel-1.5122219
  10. Oh sure, throw in another layer of bigoted paranoia.
  11. I can't find where he said that. Can you? I just find this: “incidents like this cannot be tolerated.” Mistaken perhaps, but seems pretty benign nonetheless. I'm not sure why the bigots got so riled about it. Do you really think this needs to be made public to appease the hysterical bigots? Such a tempest in a teapot.
  12. You think the PM should have publicly humiliated an 11 year old girl? Are you for real? Bigots seeks to dehumanize others, but they really only dehumanize themselves.
  13. Now there's a worn out troll lie. Surely you can do better to earn your troll bucks.
  14. Nonsense. 40% of all adult Canadians effectively pay no income tax. (NOT "the working population" ) https://business.financialpost.com/personal-finance/taxes/trudeau-is-right-40-of-canadians-dont-pay-income-taxes-which-means-someone-else-is-picking-up-the-bill They are young families raising the next generations of taxpayers, working, paying taxes and child care and getting child tax credits. Should they not be having children? They are low income. How would you cope with being a single parent working at McDonald's to survive? Or paying support on that? They are disabled or unemployable. They are students. Duh. They are seniors. We worked. 'Nuff said. And the taxes paid by the wealthiest are a pittance of those they evade. They shouldn't be getting that rich on cheap Labour.
  15. I think the fact you're missing is that we have a temporary pension challenge with the demographic bulge of baby boomers. We very numerous boomers have been a challenge to public services at every stage, most noticeable in education and now in senior health care and pensions. It's a blip for a couple of decades. Immigration does help, and things will level out.
  16. That whole post has a US context. Did you let your camouflage slip?
  17. It is not a political issue anymore. If you don't believe in abortion, don't have one.
  18. It's a personal choice and a medical issue now, not a viable political issue. https://www.ctvnews.ca/politics/scheer-says-he-won-t-reopen-abortion-debate-as-tories-vote-to-uphold-policy-1.4067935
  19. I doubt it very much. Harper avoided discussing it, despite his personal religious fundamentalism and following. https://www.ctvnews.ca/harper-says-he-ll-vote-against-abortion-motion-1.801761 It's just not a viable political issue anymore.
  20. Our Constitution Act states: CANADIAN CHARTER OF RIGHTS AND FREEDOMS Whereas Canada is founded upon principles that recognize the supremacy of God and the rule of law: It's intended to refer to all religions, but leaves some question about whether one is free not to believe in God. It doesn't keep me awake with worry. Lol The Oath of Citizenship contains no such reference: I swear (or affirm) that I will be faithful and bear true allegiance to Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, Queen of Canada, Her Heirs and Successors, and that I will faithfully observe the laws of Canada and fulfil my duties as a Canadian citizen. The references to the Queen are sometimes controversial, particularly in Quebec but also to other Canadians including some immigrants from countries devastated by colonialism. (EG, India that fought for and gained back independence from the Crown.). But it's a reality we live with that has survived court challenges. I don't think that keeps anyone awake with worry much either. Lol
  21. This is where the problem lies with Airbnb misuse: https://www.cbc.ca/news/business/biggest-airbnb-hosts-canada-corporations-1.5116103 Who's behind the smiling faces of some Airbnb hosts? Multimillion-dollar corporations But while Airbnb promotes itself as a darling of the sharing economy, touting stays in real people's homes and relationships with personable hosts, its biggest players in Canada are actually — and sometimes secretly — multimillion-dollar for-profit corporations, a CBC News data analysis found. It's a far cry from co-founder and CEO Brian Chesky's vision of "ordinary people" becoming micro-entrepreneurs and earning a little extra income to help them make their own rent. ... Airbnb did not suggest that anyone CBC News spoke to was violating its terms of service, though some jurisdictions restrict multiple listings under local regulations. ... Aouad said the company has been cutting back on its tourist offerings to focus on longer-term business bookings, and added that his company's image was suffering from the noise complaints and neighbours' gripes associated with many Airbnbs. Communities Personable biographies or even fake photos obscure the operations of big businesses
  22. I don't favour Liberals or Conservatives. But I would expect our government of whatever political party to respect due process for all Canadian citizens, no more no less. Would you not? (And isn't this getting a bit off topic?
  23. 8 votes This is what I'm watching ... https://www.straight.com/news/1233956/paul-manly-nanaimo-ladysmith-election-voters-last-chance-set-stage-change-fall Business matters. Green business.
