I was against it based on the principle that an adult has the right to wear it if they wish, and to keep the nanny state out of people's closets. (I know it sounds weird... nanny state, get back in the closet!) However I came to realize that if they're brought up in that culture from birth they won't willingly let go of it, and they would pass this tradition on to their children. I do not want this to be a Canadian tradition.

So you agree something should be done at least. Implementation would have to ensure that she is fully protected. People who find that unacceptable should not immigrate to Canada. I imagine it is never easy for first generation immigrants to deal with a big cultural change when moving to a foreign country. A law banning the Burka and unwanted female circumcision would be accepted much more easily by the second generation, girls who are born here.

Kind of like saying "I want to create a law to protect the innocent, but probably shouldn't because criminals might break that law."

I can see why but if you believe victory is all that matters in politics, Trump has his result. Hard to say if he did it intentionally, but I wouldn't be surprised if he did. Too many of those occurrences worked in his favour. When he was stomping around, he took the attention right off of her. Everybody's watching him, and not listening to what she's saying. Food for the people who like him, a distraction for those who don't. I mean the man's either a genius or... haha Not that I am highly interested in US politics but the drama is fun to watch, and says some interesting things about politics, media manipulation and social attitudes. Sociologists are writing many papers these days, no doubt.

Constitutional rights in the Canadian Forces
OftenWrong replied to blackbird's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
It's no different. And civilians are equally held accountable by employers if they do something extremely stupid that gets attention. -
Off topic again. I never said I accepted any such thing and what I write here is what I actually believe, not fake. I suggest you cease the attack or you will be reported.

I imagine there are some who really are that mean and extreme. But I believe that problem could be dealt with some how. Counselling would be a good idea for Muslim families who have that kind of difficulty adopting to life in Canada. Not allowing someone to leave the house is criminal, so there is a basis for doing something about it. Problem with counselling is it really should best be done by other Muslims who already live here. Westernized Muslims. The Imam would be the right person to talk to everyone in the family. Transitions are quite difficult for people to make and first generation immigrants who are raised to accept Burka, circumcision as normal might be quite unhappy. If that's the case let them leave Canada. Or stay and put up with it. It's the second generation, their children, who will be given a better life here.

Off topic. It's not about you or me.

Sure, because Obama managed to reach out across the political spectrum. He managed to garner more support from those regions of the EC than Hillary. Why this is can b another topic for discussion. The EC worked out fine for Obama, and this even despite him being a "black" man. Some of the more extreme types on the right were utterly horrified, I'm sure. But since he won it twice it proves that they are in fact in the minority. Right wingers voted for Obama. But that election was far more dignified, on both sides.
-
I have no fears. I don't see the two issues as identical, but perhaps tied to the root cause of a barbarous culture that is becoming increasing more oppressive and fundamental in its teachings.
-
The EC did not affect Obama.

Hockey players are people from all walks of life. Doctors, teachers, crane operators. Not just smart or whatever, some of the nicest people you'll ever meet.

Yeah the mistakes and incendiary talk is now part of mainstream accepted pop culture, which only makes matters worse for everyone. How we got to the point that reality TV became real is another topic for discussion. What Trump said was attractive to millions of disenfranchised voters, many of whom I agree have a low education and don't know how to clearly voice their concerns. Not many Muslim voters, so no big loss there. Same goes for Mexicans. Not all Mexicans were to be deported by the way. The payout on the "white people" side for what he did was yuge... Meanwhile Hillary's "deplorables" was probably her worst mistake and her enemies jumped right on it. Made her look like an arrogant self-justified liberal, the exact persona that conservative voters most despise. Why? Because she did not speak very exactly, she made a sweeping general statement that could be easily taken out of context. What Trump said, he meant intentionally. What Hillary said was a gaff that she ultimately paid for. Perhaps thread title should be Dumb Dems.
-
What I said was not even about terrorism. Your point about Amish etc. is not a bad one, since they also dress very modestly but that is not my concern either. If the cultural examples you give believe they have a god-given right to beat their women then they are included in my criticism.

Xenophobia and racism does exist, but does not reign supreme among a very large crowd. Most conservatives are not saying exactly what you just pointed out, they're saying what I pointed out. But there is some common ground here, as your last sentence indicates we need to route out and be very specific about who our enemies are and who they ain't. And the more we accuse one another of holding extreme simple minded views, the further we are from understanding that. To bring this on topic, Dems were accused of this very act, not listening to/ disregarding entirely the views of vast numbers of people on the right, along with a few ill timed, dumb mistakes ("deplorables"), resulting in the presidency you see now. Lesson: be specific, very specific.
-
I think it more depends on what things are done "in the name of". If there's a group of people committing murder in the name of something, then that something acquires a life of its own beyond the specific actions of the shooter. Doesn't matter the skin colour... white Muslim terrorists shall be equally held accountable.

He's never even invited the Maple Leafs. Trudeau knows nothing about hockey, a game that is practically at the very heart of Canadian culture. He's no hockey playing PM, that's for sure. But Canadian hockey does know about Trudeau it seems- Prime Minister Justin Trudeau Booed At Edmonton Oilers Hockey Game "... and while Bettman is usually the target of the loudest heckling and jeers at NHL events, the prime minister bore the brunt of the boos that night. In fact, the noise made by the crowd completely drowned out his remarks."

And I would say that you have abandoned her. Everyone wants a piece of her, family, public. The problem goes away on both sides if the family stops forcing their women to dress that way, or more importantly stops treating them as if they have no right to their own self determination. The only way to make that happen is to change their culture. I used to think they had the right to wear whatever and didn't care either, but my opinion changed over time. I support the idea of banning this symbol of oppression.
-
Good points, I find it rather ironic that some of these leftists openly defend a culture that gives a Muslim man the right to treat women as if they are mere chattle, to be controlled, covered, beaten when necessary, and even give support to the opinion that women are simple-minded passive creatures having no strong views on politics or human rights. The inconsistency of these views baffles me.
-
I'm sure if I said what eyeball said here about women, I'd be called a chauvenist by someone like you.
-
Interesting that you get "likes" for your stereotyping. I guess as long as the stereotype works for you, it's fine.
-
Right, because that is all women really want to talk about.

"No Schedule" on Cannabis Legalization
OftenWrong replied to Boges's topic in Federal Politics in Canada
Just heard that the legal age for pot in Alberta and Quebec will be 18 years old. Meanwhile I recall hearing that Ontario has set its legal age at 19. I find that rather strange... are Ontarians not mature enough to smoke their weed at 18? Whacky. -
Always finding a way to bring in Trump, eh fella? Hint, the thread title.

Ok, but this is our El Guapo.
