  1. Ignorant people are taking over and the country is going downhill because of it. The lunatics are running the asylum. Expect education to be denigrated, incompetent people to be extolled for superficial reasons, and taxpayers to throw more money at many people for whom handouts are a way of life. What a sad state of affairs. People react to sound bytes emotionally without questioning or getting details. Canada is canceled. https://apple.news/AsFaRZ0u_QdWOjwo3gnZczA

  2. Rather than trying to find answers over the causes of death and identities of children buried at residential schools, most of whom likely died of the same illnesses and diseases that took the lives of many children and adults during a time without antibiotics or other modern medical treatments, radical voices are using residential schools as the reason to cancel Canada Day and erase the figures who founded this great country. While Alberta Premier Jason Kenny bravely stood up in defence of Canada, his is a very lone voice. Who will stand up for Canada and protect the workers who continue to fight to improve it? https://apple.news/AnxmelO-ORM-FKGeLhmLxcg

  3. That's nice. But whatever he said to someone it wasn't his policy. He did not require mandatory attendance at these schools. The policy was implemented in 1894 after his death, by a Liberal government.

  5. Trudeau whines endlessly about how Canada supposedly committed genocide against natives but at the same time is eager to do business with China, which is ACTUALLY committing genocide. And which Trudeau does not seem to place much importance in. Chinese birth-control policies could reduce the ethnic minority population in southern Xinjiang by up to a third over the next 20 years, according to new analysis by a German researcher. The analysis concluded that regional policies could cut between 2.6 and 4.5 million minority births in that time. China has been accused by some Western nations of genocide in Xinjiang, partly through forced birth-control measures. https://www.bbc.com/news/world-asia-china-57383548

  7. That can be a factually verifiable statement 1) the sequence in question exists in the Covid-19 (examples, and a complete database of the genome is available) and 2) it has never been recorded in the known natural viruses. If there's an example if the "double CGG" sequence (as a nucleotide sequence) it shouldn't be too hard/long to check p.1. This isn't my area but the second part should also be verifiable by specialists. Though if spelt literally ("CGGCGG") my hunch would be it's too short to make such a statement in confidence.

  9. So if in Canada there was zero intervention with Indigenous and mothers were about to die in childbirth or an elder needed an operation to remove a cancerous tumour, you’d suggest leaving them alone and not getting involved. That’s the problem. The missing major argument that most people think but don’t necessarily express is that very few people in their right mind would reject modern science and conveniences and the education that would provide access to the high skilled jobs that allow people to participate in advanced modern western civilization. What we try to preserve now is a way of life that in fact very few people live or would ever choose to live. It’s one thing to make art, go to pow wows, and enjoy a sea doo or snowmobile on the res where few taxes are paid and services are provided by Canada. It’s another to live an ancient way of life completely segregated from mainstream non-Indigenous society. How many Indigenous would choose the latter? Why pretend that the old ways were pure and harmonious when it was clearly a more dangerous and desperate life that almost no one would choose? Residential schools, for all their problems, were an attempt to bring Indigenous into the modern world. The resolution has been to keep the reserves, federal benefits and funding, and enhance cultural preservation, but it’s artificial, because almost no one actually lives the old way of life or wants that. The far North is more authentically independent and keeping the old ways alive, but that happened mainly because few non-Indigenous tried to settle up there. It would be great to have your cake and eat it too, except that no one who works and pays towards the services government provides has been able to achieve that. Why should Indigenous get extra? Residential schools had problems, but let’s not pretend that they are the sole cause of Indigenous problems today. Blaming historic mistreatment for today’s problems is too simplistic. Some people who come from hardship achieve great things Some who come from privilege squander it In the end we have to do the best we can with what we have and move on from the blame game, or else there’s an abdication of personal responsibility that gives far too much power to forces outside the individual.

  10. You've asked us to put ourselves into the shoes of someone living in that time. things were a lot different , That much we know already, you asked if the abuse was planned at the top... the Answer is yes thats where it started, here we have a government that refers to them as "Savages" not a term of endearment that much is true, but rather a term used to describe someone inferior, yada yada yada... the tone is set right from the start, the church and the government and all agencies involved would would treat them accordingly. slightly better than a stray dog.. and the facts bare that out. Where the main objective was to suppress their culture, how is that not abuse... Next they the government wanted to educate them so they may fit into their white world, and yet they were not allowed in salons or hotels any where that white people hung out in townships, No one hired a Indian for work, so where would they use this education ? you paint a picture where these poor bastards where lost up until the government found them living like animals and yet they have history that dates back hundreds of years before white men came to North America...They seemed to survive just fine. How would this education be used in the north or place that was isolated, where contact with white people was rare or infrequent. You mentioned all the new inventions of the times, and yet how many were allowed to ride on a train, or or afford to own a car , or use a radio.... I'm thinking not many...

  11. What? You think abuse was planned from the top? Get real. There was no policy of abuse. Different educators treated children in different ways. The standards for discipline were much harsher for children of all backgrounds then. The matter of being separated from parents was unavoidable if students from remote areas attended school. Yes there was a suppression of “Indian” culture and by our standards today that was wrong. Then it was considered progress because the living standards of most Indigenous were substantially lower. Would it have been better not to provide free education? Perhaps it shouldn’t have been mandatory, though I’m not sure that would’ve been a better scenario. This idea of people living a thousands year old way of life as trains and automobiles and decent housing with modern conveniences became widespread is a bit unrealistic, and that’s putting it mildly.

  12. Somewhere a while ago I read about Canada’s involvement, in the wihan Coronavirus research. So I found a linky-dink. Canadian scientist sent deadly viruses to Wuhan lab months before CBC, June 15 2020
