Canadians are very proud of their country, which was never a melting pot. That’s the point. I’ll explain it at a more grass roots level. There’s an American way of doing things and there are more social pressures to be the American way, which in a way is limiting. The US is more about its sports teams, which is at the centre of its education system; and more about its military, because there’s usually some foreign war and there’s an associated super power mentality that expounds assertions of power. There’s a relationship between these activities that relates to empire and its circuses. Canada has a proud military heritage, but it’s more related to peacekeeping and protecting allies and people. Immigrants are freer to be themselves, and make no mistake, multiculturalism can impact national cohesion if people stay in cultural ghettos, but that isn’t actually what happens. By the second generation immigrants’ kids are playing hockey, hanging out with people from all different backgrounds, sharing music, etc. That doesn’t make Canadians commie snowflakes or whatever derogatory term you want to call us. Don’t get me wrong, the differences from Americans aren’t dramatic and we all enjoy much of the same music, films, professional sports, etc. Just stop characterizing us as lesser or weak because we’re not exactly like you and don’t have identical views. Do I know Canadians who would fit in with Republicans? Yes. Do I know Americans who would be at home with the Liberals or NDP? Yes. Everyone just relax.
