  1. The point is - almost all of us know that the Mafia is but a tiny subset of Italians. Likewise, regardless of your drum-beating - almost all of us know that extremists are but a small subset of Muslims. Sure - there are some lunkheads who paint with a broad brush - just like there's some puddin-heads who equate all Italians with the Mafia. To blow it all up into "islamaphobia" and hatred is just fear mongering where very little genuine hatred exists - a wooly-headed attempt to sew political divisions. Jews have had to "suck it up" for millenia - but no one has called for Jew-phobia legislation.

  2. If you can cleanse your mind of the rigidity of your thinking - look at Italians.......they have the Mafia within their "culture" - yet almost all Italians will have nothing to do with them and are absolutely OK with the whole of society vilifying them. And they all happen to be Catholic. That's pretty much what I expect of Muslims - to openly and constantly vilify extremism, jihad and all the trappings - and to accept that it's OK for society as a whole - including Muslims of course - to vilify it. And our politicians have to be brave and bold enough to support that position - all for one and one for all - and together we marginalize those who would perpetrate these acts and foment violence. All that said, I'm not completely sure how Muslims can so clearly express their rejection/disgust with extremism and all it represents. There is no central mechanism. That's where our media and politicians come in - stop pussy-footing around. Get buy-in from Muslim groups and give them voice - a loud and clear voice. If there's a reluctance to buy-in, then we've actually got a problem.

  4. Really? You don't think maybe Muslims are in some way responsible for that too? I mean, there doesn't seem to be the same antipathy to Hindus or Buddhists. Why do you suppose that is? How come we're not seeing tons of hate crimes against Chinese, given the rise in their numbers? Why Muslims in particular?

  5. All i got from that article is that trump started a trade war to boost his ego. That's as much fake news as it gets. China certainly has some tools to fight back at the US but again those methods are just as destructive as tariffs. Doubt they will use it. Also if they devalue their currency too much to the tune of 200 billion dollar or 25 percent they will see a flight of their currency toward inflation. Also, we didnt start this trade war, china did. We were at war for 25 years. China will lose unless they reform. You will see a collapse of their industrial base overnight if tariff hold. Companies are already leaving china for other less tariffed countries. Look even the Chinese government's ministry of propaganda news admit it...https://www.scmp.com/business/china-business/article/2067470/why-foreign-companies-are-shutting-shop-china

  6. In 2015, hate crimes against Catholics rose by a similar percentage - from 35 to 55. Crimes against Jews actually dropped from 213 to 178. In 2016 - crimes against Muslims went down - and crimes against Jews went up. One thing is clear - with a population of only 400,000 Jews as opposed to one million Muslims - hate crimes against Jews are still much more prevalent than those against Muslims. I would also speculate that Jews are even less likely to report a hate crime because they have become so used to it - sadly. Yet the media and politicians zero in on Muslim "hate crimes" - as so shamefully demonstrated with the Hijab hoax fiasco that had politicians tripping over each other with apologies and outrage.

  10. It's a nothing burger. They agreed to the status quo and to talk about stuff. Juncker can negotiate but he can't ratify, the member countries have to do that and Macron said right away that France would continue to support its agriculture and he is just the first. Some things will change but don't have high expectations. The EU had already started buying soy from the US because it is now the cheapest available due to Chinese demand driving up prices elsewhere. They were also looking into LNG imports to offset their Russian dependence. Those were business decisions not political. European automakers would love to have no tariffs (so would Asia) but it ain't going to happen and the US is the reason why. US manufacturers have basically abandoned cars and gone all in on trucks and SUV's. They have enjoyed a 25% tariff on imported light trucks since 1963 and getting rid of it would be a big win for Europe and a kick in the nuts to the US industry. Not going to happen. How to sink the US auto industry Trump's shtick requires everything to be a win, even if it is a turd. This makes him easy to play by the likes of Kim, Xi and Putin. As Juncker said to Trump, "we can also do stupid".

  13. I wish we would start keeping stats for hate crimes BY Muslims against Westerners. I'm absolutely positive that is rising in Canada. Earlier this week, a lady I work with was followed through a London Drugs by a Muslim man and his burka'ed wife - he was angry, shouting at her in whatever language, apparently didn't like the length of the skirt she was wearing. Twice she told him to Stop and leave her alone. She finally just left the store, no one did anything to help her. But of course, unless it's a white person shouting at a Muslim, it's not going to make the news. A white guy yelling at a Muslim? That makes the news as a hate crime. A Muslim yelling at a Western woman? Who cares. At least we're keeping track of what's happening with our Jewish population. Anti-semitism IS rising in Canada: https://torontosun.com/news/national/anti-semitism-on-the-rise-in-canada-statistics-canada While some of that stat may include white supremicists, I doubt it's completely white supremicists increasing the Jew-hating in Canada. I'm not sure why so many think that followers of one of the most intolerant, misogynistic religions are not also perpetrators of hate crimes. It's like there are 2 sets of standards - oh yes, we'll say "Musllims committing hate crimes is also bad" but in reality - we're not allowed to acknowledge that it happens because it doesn't fit the current narrative of Muslims always being the victims, not the perpetrators.

  14. Where's your proof that anti-Muslim hate crimes are rising? If they weren't, would you alter your opinion? Try this source for starters - I've also included a link to the supporting news story......... 15. Americans heard the same things about George W. Bush's re-election in 2004. Because you're not in the U.S., I think it unlikely that you or others outside America understand just how much less Americans care about such international approvals. That's more of a Canadian value..."please love us". However, we are very much aware of such things....Pew polling routinely measures and reports on same: http://www.pewresearch.org/fact-tank/2017/07/17/9-charts-on-how-the-world-sees-trump/ America's reputation waxes and wanes depending on many factors, and people from around the world keep trying to vote with their feet to get into the USA.

  17. Agreed...as China faces several practical barriers to displacing the U.S. as global hegemon (language, culture, government, military power projection, immigration, reserve currency, etc.) China built a Great Wall long before Trump had the idea.

  19. https://torontosun.com/opinion/columnists/fatah-mentally-ill-the-media-or-the-murderer?video_autoplay=true We should all be troubled that the state broadcaster has inserted itself into this specific case. The CBC has turned into a propaganda machine. It was the CBC that aimed the spotlight on the mental illness issue and gun crime to divert from the aspect of a potential Muslim hate crime against average Canadians.
