There's absolutely no reason to believe this would have been any different. You also completely exempt the citizens of Iran from what developed, as if they were all just a bunch of animals with no say in how their society was ordered. You prefer to deal with ancient history because modern history is far less clear-cut. Afghanistan was an invasion condoned by the United Nations, of a nation run by one of the world's most brutal regimes which itself had seized power through the barrel of a gun and had no legitimacy. It was no more representative of the people's will than Iraq. Why do you believe people who seize and then hold power through mass murder have any legitimacy? At least the ones there now have a sort of legitimacy from being elected, however imperfect those elections.

So many people died or tortured or disappeared for decades after until Pinochet stepped aside (even though for years after he was still deciding as he had the army officers behind him) and still Chile is not a complete democracy. But plenty of recent examples too. Iraq invasion and devastation, Afghanistan killings of defenseless women and children ........and the list goes on.

It was as recently as the 70's when we in Finland had an extra-tax for unmarried people and that tax caught on very young, something like 24-25 years of age. The worrying thing is that as the birth-rate is plummetting, which is a worrying thing, some people have proposed that such an unfair tax should be brought back. There are so many what-ifs attached to such a tax that even though the plummetting birth-rate is a genuinen problem the way to approach that problem should be with a carrot rather than a stick which such a tax was.
