The problem with the US's empire building, was that it was done under the guise of "freedom and democracy",when it was really about propping up Fascist autocrats who wouls do the State Department's anti-Communist bidding. This,in almost all cases, meant almost no freedom and virtually no democracy.Only the enriching of the home of the empire...
When the U.S.'s "empire building" in the Republic of China (circa 1949) and Iran stopped, the result was "freedom and democracy" right?

Just checking.

And what do these "laborers" (spelling fixed) produce?

You spelled "labourers" wrong.

I'm talking about actual organized labour in Egypt. So, they produce lots of stuff.

And clean streets, which should keep a LOT of them busy for a while after all this, eh... :D

Oh no? China "lectures" mightily about Dalai Lama visits to other nations. I wonder why?

Not the same thing, really! However one sees Tibet issue (BTW I'm firmly on the side of Tibet's right for freedom) by it's nature it's China's immediate concern (like Tibet's). It's much more challenging to see the connection between abstract "democracy" and the immediate interest of its great proponents (in the word if less so in the act).

Tis so I'm afraid... Even an Alien must play the hand one is dealt...

They finally figured out I was an illegal Alien. All my time on earth I was under the radar - I was free...and now I am captured...took them almost 60 years to figure out who I was...but like all prisoners of the cosmic war...it is my duty to plan my escape and I will escape....perhaps I will disguise myself as and old man and go to China...or actually New Zealand...it seems untouched by evil and stupidity.

Rather have the army rule through the barrel of a gun than be ruled by rats that are highly dependent on deception and instituted conspiracy...at least the army is honest...I can live with that...the other is tedious - irritating and slowly wears you down...congrats to Egypt and f off to America - Russia - China or other interlopers who are ready to take advantage of people bathed in joy.

Also - Harper is going on about fair and democratic elections in Egypt...what makes his so sure they want democracy? What makes him so sure that there is such a thing...If I vote for a person to represent me..and that person loses the election - then I live under a dictatorship at that point.... Now OBAMA - is already taking on the role of ass hole as per usual for the United States...he acts as if he now suddenly own Egypt...he should also - f off and leave the place alone.

You spelled "labourers" wrong.

According to my version of Microsoft it's spelled without the "u". We say "lay-boor", not "lay-bower".

I'm talking about actual organized labour in Egypt. So, they produce lots of stuff.

And again what stuff do they produce? I don't see many "made in Egypt" tags or labels.

????

You made the initial joke...I simply made the same one.

Besides, look at how you spell "version." (We do too, don't get me wrong.) How come you don't say "ver-sy-on"?

And again what stuff do they produce? I don't see many "made in Egypt" tags or labels.

Do you not know what "labour" means? Or do you genuinely believe that "labour" doesn't occur in Egypt?

Your questions are nonsensical..but then, you're trying to be a dick; you're trying emulate the style of bush_cheney2004.

Well, for one, Egypt exports a variety of cotten textiles, some amongst the best in the world. Check your bed linens and towels next time you travel to a five star hotel.

Nevermind Hotels, it's the BEST and I've got Egyptian Cotton bedding right at home... :D

A little-reported fact is that labour movements have been central; there have been thousands of labour strikes in the past few years (often quashed violently by authorities); and tens of thousands (at least) of the current protesters are affilated with the labour movement.

And they're organized.

This is potentially a good sign as well.

The Left, socialists etc, were a big part of the movement to oust the Shah. They didn't get long to enjoy their victory before the Mullahs started executing them.

Ummm, did I miss the attacks on Embassies, the violence, etc., etc.?

Or are you maybe trying to make a comparison that doesn't exist to inflame things on here much like the media is doing to up their ratings...

No. My point is that the Egyptian government has 6,000,000 people that "work" for them. I don't think much gets done.

Please do not put me in the same sentence as BC2004.

Much of the media was fatuously describing the mullahs in Iran as a "progressive" force.

The attacks on embassies didn't happen until after the Ayatollahs were in charge.

Hey Scotty, you missed one, or is it you've got no answer?

Answered.

BTW, Laurence Solomon makes the point in his column today that the urban people involved in the demonstrations in Cairo etc are a far cry from the rural people who make up the great bulk of Egypt's population. Few of the latter seem terribly interested in western democratic values, instead preferring an Islamic "caliphate" with Sharia law.
