Topaz Posted April 24, 2007 Report Posted April 24, 2007 In the voting of tonight on the mission in Afghanistan, I can understand the voting of the Cons, Libs, Bloc but the NDP??? They are against the war from the start and want Canada to withdrawal now, so why would they vote with the Cons NOT to set a date to END the mission?? Did Layton make a deal with Harper to vote with the govt, and in return Harper would put something into the new environment package for Jack??? Quote
scribblet Posted April 24, 2007 Report Posted April 24, 2007 Just a guess but Layton probably didn't want to lock himself into a date which has actually allready been set (2009) I'm betting he voted against it to give himself elbow room in calling for earlier withdraw. There's method in his madness. Quote Hey Ho - Ontario Liberals Have to Go - Fight Wynne - save our province
Michael Bluth Posted April 24, 2007 Report Posted April 24, 2007 No opposition wants an election now. So on every confidence vote one of the opposition parties will have to find a reason to support the Government. It was the NDP's turn... There's method in his madness. Scriblett, it would appear you are giving "Taliban Jack" a free ride. Regardless, the NDP has put forth motions for the early withdrawl of troops from Afghanistan. The CPC and the NDP positions have been at polar opposites. The CPC continued with the Liberal Combat mission, and the NDP disagreed with the whole concept. The CPC/Canadian Government, have committed themselves to 2009. Quote

Quote Almost three thousand people died needlessly and tragically at the World Trade Center on September 11; ten thousand Africans die needlessly and tragically every single day-and have died every single day since September 11-of AIDS, TB, and malaria. We need to keep September 11 in perspective, especially because the ten thousand daily deaths are preventable. - Jeffrey Sachs (from his book "The End of Poverty")
Canadian Blue Posted April 24, 2007 Report Posted April 24, 2007 The NDP wants an immediate withdrawal, that's why they wouldn't support the bill. Quote "Keep your government hands off my medicare!" - GOP activist
geoffrey Posted April 25, 2007 Report Posted April 25, 2007 Was this a confidence vote? Not as far as I know, but it would have been a prime reason to pull the plug on the government. I wouldn't want to run a campaign on Afghanistan though, especially not when trying to win over Quebec. Quote RealRisk.ca - (Latest Post: Prosecutors have no "Skin in the Game") --

madmax Posted April 25, 2007 Report Posted April 25, 2007 This is accurate The NDP wants an immediate withdrawal, that's why they wouldn't support the bill. This was funny. The NDP are against fighting the Taliban and therefore are demanding the immediate surrender of the Army....and that's why they won't support the bill. LOL and the intent of the Liberal motion is to wait till 2009 and then surrender. Quote

IF the NDP want the troops home, wouldn't it be better to at least have a date set rather than not know or have the Cons extended even more?? Quote
myata Posted April 25, 2007 Report Posted April 25, 2007 Beats me (NDP logic that is). We want troops back now so we vote down the only possible motion that will bring them back in any measurable time. Welcome to Laytons dreamworld politics. Quote If it's you or them, the truth is equidistant

It is up to the people to change the systems and the corruption that they see, that is you me, and everyone else. They think we are just a bunch of push-over in society as a whole, and guess what, they are right. Most people tend to forget a problem because it is the flavor of the day, week, or month... TIme washes it away and a new issue comes aboard. Take hold of a thought and an issue hold it there, you too will see that you forget about it until it affects you directly. scribblet Posted April 25, 2007 Report Posted April 25, 2007 Pretty hypocritcal of the Liberals too as they are undermining a mission they chose to get into without a vote, at least the CPC held a vote. Dion supported the mission in Afghanistan. Since the 2006 election, however, he has flip-flopped his position several times: * May 2006: Dion voted against extending the mission; * May 2006: Dion said he has “always been a strong supporter of Canada’s mission in Afghanistan and Kandahar”; [http://stephanedion.ca/?q=en/node/120) * September 2006: Dion said that Canada would “dishonour” itself by withdrawing its troops from Afghanistan; [Vancouver Sun, September 19, 2006] * November 2006: Dion said Canada should withdraw its troops “with honour” before 2009; [Edmonton Journal, November 22, 2006] * December 2006: Dion said: “we can’t give up on the mission until we have deployed everything to ensure it works.” [Montreal Gazette, December 19, 2006] Quote Hey Ho - Ontario Liberals Have to Go - Fight Wynne - save our province
