Not my part ship (as they say) but since there are some AI fans here, this is  what the bot thinks about farming vs the automobile sector:

SECTOR CONTRIBUTION TO GDP EMPLOYMENT (% OF TOTAL) KEY HIGHLIGHTS
Farming 1.6% to 1.8% 1% Major employer in agri-food sectors.
Automotive ~6.3% Industry Directly: 0.6% Contributes ~$19.2 billion in GDP.
Mining 5.2% to 7.8% ~1% Supports ~694,000 jobs directly and indirectly.
Fisheries ~2% ~90,000 jobs Over $9 billion contribution to GDP.

Only fisheries indicates how many workers.

But it looks like the auto sector is lagging ..

Which would be entirely relevant if the deal benefited all farmers. But it doesn't even come remotely close4

For canola:

  • Direct/Indirect Contribution: While some estimates place the direct GDP contribution around $5 billion, the overall economic footprint (including processing, crushing, and exporting) is much higher, with $25 billion originating specifically from growing and developing canola.

For automotive

The Canadian automotive industry is a cornerstone of the national economy, directly contributing over $16 billion (CAD) to the GDP in 2024, with total economic activity, including related sectors and suppliers, reaching higher figures. It is one of Canada's largest manufacturing sectors, supporting over 125,000 direct jobs and roughly 427,000 in total.

So  comparing direct to direct it's 5 billion for canola vs 16 billion for automotive. Both generate substantial additional money in shipping, supplies etc.

Even if we toss in lobsters it's not like canola and fish are a bigger deal.

both are important. Both generate a lot of economic activity.

But the number seem to indicate that we can't really afford to give up one for the other, no matter how you slice it that's a loss

And it ain't China;s fault is it? Just a scapegoat to blame for what's already happening.

BTW: CM just announced Chevt's dropping production of the Bolt. Again. Trump's anti-EV push has sent the domestics running away at full speed. So now he threatens us with 100%tariffs unless HE totally decides what cars Canadians can buy.

Adopt a GST tax writeoff for buyers of Cdn built vehicles.

Nope, it's carney's for letting them in

So it is weeks after the China deal and .....

Ahh yes...lets save the Canadian (Ontario) auto sector. Boycott everything LOL

So, doing that will save Ontario jobs NOT!!!

GM just slows down more plants in Oshawa laying off 1200 people.

Or just don't give china open access to the market unless they're willing to invest in auto production in Canada. I know, crazy thought

Which proves that what carney did was bad. Investment will continue to flee and the auto sector will wind down and die and there's nothing to replace it. The deal carney did hurts us more than it helps us and at best if you are truly optimistic it'll be a break even. So if we break even and the Chinese benefit substantially how is it a win for us?

HA HA HA...Carney did not cry boycott... that was Ford and then he realized better things to come and backed off.

GM is closing and moving to the US because it cannot afford the wages and benefits so it is moving back to t the US. Canada no longer produces much because of wages and benefits being to high.

And Carney announced potential deals with Hyundai so.. out goes the US and GM and in comes Korea LOL

There's nothing whatsoever in your article that indicates China had anything to do with this layoff from GMs perspective. It's entirely due to Trump.

I didn't say there was anything in the article that said that. But the fact of the matter is that the auto sector is removing investment and Carney's deal supports that.

Are you trying to claim that Carney's deal to bring Chinese vehicles to Canada is improving investment in our auto sector?

Why didn't GM cite that as a reason for laying people off like you did then?

No. I'm claiming the article you posted reported that GM is holding Trump entirely responsible for its decision to lay people off.

So you do agree then that automotive investment is fleeing Canada as a result of this.

No, I agree with GM that it's because of Trump.
