This brings up many interesting question, should America have defended Europe from Russia? What is in it for America to do so? Russia would have gladly paid America handsomely to step aside. Russia and America are not natural enemies.

IOW, Zelenskiyy must go - and western Ukraine must become like Belorus. (Zelenskiy is a Russian actor but that's another story... )

Do not dismiss the question, this is the heart of American Isolationism. Why should we defend Europe? What do we get in exchange for our blood and treasure? Russia poses no real threat to America. Their nukes do not need to face Washington , but Beijing.

The best Putin can hope for is time. To get Trump to delay further secondary sanctions on India and China that would eviscerate the Russian oil export.
 

This is also bad for the world as the Siberian oil contain water as a byproduct. This will go offline permanently if the pipe freezes from a pause in production. Skyrocketing oil prices world wide unless more production comes online elsewhere to offset.

Regardless of what Putin says, the facts stand on their own. 

Putin did not invade on Trumps watch. Trump outright threatened him not to while he was President. Trump also authorized more lethal anti-tank weapons... the very weapons that helped stop the initial invasion from completely taking Ukraine on week 1.
