F*cking dummy strikes again. N&L as of yesterday was only boosting fines for open fires.
It's NS & NB smartass.

How does that make what I said last true?

LOL you didn't think that through did you :)

Sounds like denying people's rights and supporting gov't overreach is really paying off fighting those fires.  Good job!

You think a fire ban in response to our provincial crisis is government overreach?

I think you responded to my comments involving bans for the entire province, and my specific comment that if the entire province burns down you won't have to worry about banning things next year, and I think it's pretty obvious that your fireban didn't seem to save them there from a fire.

So pointing out that speaking up for gov't overreach or bans didn't stop you guys suffering seems pretty appropriate and defensible

Not all fire bands are instantly going to be government overreach but it's pretty obvious that when you have a total activity band covering an entire province before fires ever start you've gone over that line. Somewhere in between you go from reasonable to unreasonable.

And at the end of the day these bans never seem to help much.

The government solution to almost everything seems to be to simply take away the right to do anything. We're not going to look for some solution that allows people to go into the woods and enjoy it safely, we're just going to say the entire province that you own and are part of as citizens of this country is now off limits to you because we say so because we think you're too stupid.

That's not okay. That is government overreach

In Newfoundland we are in mortal fear of the next wildfire. I would support virtually any measures the government deems necessary to prevent them. The Avalon peninsula, usually a damp, cold and foggy place, has one that is 52 square kms.

So you're admitting to some of these dorks that you'll cave to these conspiracies against freedumbs strictly out of fear of being burned alive or losing everything you've worked for?
Stand against that 52 km2 fire with your garden hose like a real man!
Or bellow like some US Governor how we're "letting" the fire smoke cross the border.

Hard to believe that both coasts are threatened. Port Alnerni is at risk from forest fire too! Both normally damp and rainy places!

They say that freedoms die in fear.

I find it interesting that the reaction isn't that the government should do more to prevent wildfires, or be able to address wildfires when they happen, or manage for us better or the light. Your first thought is to immediately run out and surrender freedoms in the hope that it'll grant safety

Science is neither progressive nor conservative.  People who deny evidence-based conclusions in favour of what some talking fool said on Youtube deserves their fate.

The thing with the Trump admin is that those guys aren't the smartest knives in the drawer, like RFK, but a guy like RFK, even if he's wrong, at least has the public interests in mind and isn't just working to enrich their corporate donors like the establishment.  Populism is good, because the interests of The People should be most important, but you need populists who know WTF they're doing instead of throwing darts at the wall with a blindfold on.   Good intentions aren't enough.

I have an uncle who always comes back from roadtrips to the US with a bunch of lawncare products that he can't get in Canada because they're banned here.   I always tell him that there's probably a good reason they're banned in Canada LOL.

Anyways, the US needs to start taking real action with climate change, because things are starting to get worrisome.

We're in an atmospheric river on the westcoast. I guess we're probably all going to DIIIEEEEE!

It sounds like it's dampening fires here on the Island though so that's good.

I KNOW! Oh if only i'd paid my carbon tax HARDER......  :P

We needed the rain.  And this is just right, not too hard so that it just runs off but enough so that it'll give everything a good soaking.  Win win.

Jeez, I was about to gripe on the local Facebook group that it would be nice if it ever stopped raining and gave us a sunny summer.
Then I remembered the rest of the country is on f*cking fire and decided not to.

I remember heading out one day with a boat full of passengers mostly dressed in shorts and tee-shirts under a warm sunny sky. They must have wondered why the crew were putting sweaters on and doing up their hoodies...until we hit the wall of fog waiting outside the harbour.

I asked a couple who'd broken out in goosebumps if they'd like a blanket but they just laughed and said 'no thanks, we're from New Mexico, this is great'!

After growing up around Vancouver the first time I visited Prince Rupert in a light rain, tourists were asking my son and I for directions as we were wearing just light windbreaker jackets... a few days later there was a washout on the highway and we were stuck in Rupert for four days until the road opened.
A few years ago we went there again and passed through fire zone after fire zone until we passed Terrace.

I also remember trip after trip in the 1970s to Long Beach and it being as soggy as Rupert all the way 90% of the time. Same with the "Sunshine Coast". Now Port Alberni's under evac alert and Sechelt is years into drought....
