Yes. The prime minister of the country represents the people of the country. His successes specifically within that position are the successes of the people of the country, and his failures are the failures of the people of the country. You could think of him as being Canada's lawyer, if your lawyer loses a court case then you lose the court case, and vice versa.

Carney lost. He completely caved and that has implications for us immediately but also puts us in a very bad position with trump moving forward because trump always seeks to exploit weakness.

Therefore, Canadians lost. As a country, we caved and now we will pay a price.

Are you saying you're not Canadian and what carney does doesn't affect you?

Why is it that once again I'm forced to explain to you how our political system works? I realize you may not have finished high school yet but surely to Christ you've at least reached an age where they go over this kind of thing in social studies. Maybe pay attention in class and I won't have to waste my time going over the basics with you

I never said otherwise. It was prime minister before he even went to an election.

But he's not king. And he has a minority government.

I think the problem is you don't understand what a prime minister actually is. Prime minister is not like the president of the united states. It just means he's first among equals.

But he is our representative, even if he can't do anything without the help of other parties he is still the first minister in parliament and our representative to the world.

And for the third time today I'm forced to explain how our parliamentary system works to you

Every time you open your mouth you reinforce the idea that you are actually a teen living in their parents' basement.

He did not need to put up a fight. He just said he was not goign to collect the tax...now. He never rescinded the law nor did he say it would not be enacted later.

We, Canada, cannot wish and hope other countries are goign to hep or go hand in hand with Canadian needs. They have their own issue. We do not hear them unless you read or watch their news feeds.

Trump has caused chaos all over the world and es=ach country has to do their own thing to combat it.

I guess it's the optics of giving Trump what he wanted right now while Canadians are presumably putting more fervour into celebrating our patriotism not too mention the efforts we've put into combating Trump.  Whatever message or signal Carney was trying to communicate seems misplaced and garbled if not outright lost.

Do you think it was a bad thing that the world saw how Zelensky was treated in a manner usually reserved for closed doors?

Correct, hence my comment hat some on this forum use conjecture. They have no basis for their comments or assumptions.

What happened to Zelensky was not behind closed doors. Carney was also in the oval office and he knew what happened, hence his tact while in the oval office.

Behind closed doors is going on without Trump or Carney present. What Trumps negotiators tell Trump is one thing and what Carney hears is another. Thing is, Trump likes the publicity and plays it while Carney sits quietly and plays his hand cautiously.

None of us knows what is goign on behind those doors and for anyone to claim that Canada is "caving" or anything else is totally uninformed..as we all are. Some folks here seem to think they know or assume they know what is going on but they are completely in the dark, like we all are.

We know Trump likes little victories, so we give him some and do what we want after the fact.

He never once claimed to be or acted like a king. That is you trying to make sh1t up again LOL

I know exactly what a Prime Minister is. He is the one leading the Country and directing his staff in the biggest economic trade crisis in Canadian history....thank goodness it is him and not PP.

Get over yourself,  you do not know what is going on and will never know what went on. You, like me and the rest of Canada will only know the end result. Whining about it before it is done is useless.... like most of your posts. :)

Carney should've countered with "You drop Softwood Lumber Duties, we'll drop the DST".

Tit for Tat goes on behind closed doors, not in public or else you play into Trumps hand and behave like Trump and Carney does not want to be compared to Trump.

Yeah, as much as I'm tempted to make fun about this it is actually a serious matter. Like I said, we can all agree that it was a mistake and that he should have handled it better, but for better or worse he is our prime minister currently and we all need to really hope that he learns from this and is able to recover the situation for the next issue. Because sure as crap if trump smells blood in the water he's going to come twice as hard with his next thing.

Carney effed up... fine, nobody's perfect so dust yourself off, review, and then get serious about figuring out how you're going to deal with this next time because there is GOING to be a next time and we all need you to handle it well.

And that's as it should be? I've heard from people who've been in closed door meetings at negotiations with fishery sectors and managers between Canada and the US. Even 40 years ago people leaning across the table and asking 'just how many gunships do you people have again' weren't unheard of...just never seen by the public.

Btw Canada got rid of its fishermen and Americans catch Canadian fish in Alaska.

Good deal eh?

Let me guess, i've beaten you up so many times so badly that now you are inventing things I never said so you can have a chance of winning against them :)

Dude that is really pathetic :)  I said he was prime minister before he was even elected prime minister and I've never pretended otherwise :)

Would your mother approve of you lying about what i said? It's not very nice you know.  :)

Trump just blew carney out in public.  Carney looks like he went on his knees and gave trump whatever he wanted in public.

This is public big guy :)  And carney did what he was told and everyone knows it.

Closing your eyes, sticking your finger in your ear and humming won't change that. The question now is where do we go from here.

Yup, what goes on behind closed doors is confidential.

If your fisheries buddies found something out it was a purposeful leak. Purposeful leaks happen all the time and are often false.

No sovereignty... It's spot on topic.

Meanwhile it's heartening to see Canadian First Nations crews out filling their boats with US bound fish and telling DFO to go fùck themselves when they ask what they think they're doing.

It's called assertiveness and standing up to a bully.

What will be interesting is when the Americans start breathing down Ottawa's neck to get serious about putting Canada's Indians back in their place. I'd sure like to be a fly on the wall at the closed door meetings that causes.

Unfortunately for him everybody knows what's going on. He screwed up and trump owns him like a little bítch. And the whole country is a little pissed off about it.

Like I say, hopefully he will learn from this and do better next time because he just cost our country 7 billion dollars and now trump thinks he's a wimp and will cave whenever pushed. Which means trump is going to keep pushing.

UK was a little harder with trump and they got to keep their tax Albeit at a slightly reduced rate. They got their tariffs lower too.

We got nothing and had to give up 7-10  billion dollars in taxes. We're sure as hell not going to win this trade war giving away tens of billions every time trump makes a threat.

Carney was just the wrong choice. But he's who we've got right at the moment so we have to hope and pray he can learn and do better before he winds up turning us into the 51st state

He could have, but for all we know it was in the negotiation strategy.

I had/have no faith in someone like PP who has been a career politician and no experience in the real world.  Voters had no faith either....

Voters were stampeded to the protection of Mr. Economy who was going to be 'elbows up' and put that nasty orange man in his place! And he did, standing in front of Carney with his dick out while Carney drops to his knees.

Not the kind of thing I suspect most Canadians had expected.

Well most people know you 'negotiate' at a table behind closed doors. But the Orange Oaf has to do it on live media and tweets, so he can claim any concession whatsoever is the other guy 'caving in' to his demands. Braggart must massage his own ego.
