The LA Times did the same.

Is this their way of saying that they know Trump is going to win and they are trying not to tick him off more than usual.

Anything's possible. While it appears that trump has the best advantage it could still go either way. I doubt they're not worried about a backlash from trump over an endorsement. If anything the backlash would probably sell more papers.
