What is Canada's foreign affair minister, Melanie Joly, doing trying to make up with China?

What were the specific criticisms against Minister Joly?  Go back to the article and post it here.  🙄

Why?  Can't you read the article yourself?  Apparently you never read it or never understood it.

Apparently you didn't understand the article is a criticism of Minister Joly and the Liberal government's trying to suck up to Communist China.   The first paragraph tells you that.

"On the one hand, there’s the spectacle of Foreign Affairs Minister Mélanie Joly happily abasing herself at the feet of Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi in Beijing on Friday after being summoned to China to take instruction on how Canada should behave itself as Xi Jinping persists in flouting international trade rules, accelerates his encirclement of Taiwan and pours ever greater resources into Russia’s invasion of Ukraine."

Do you understand that Melanie Joly with Canada is trying to cozy up with a prolific human rights violator.  Chinese leaders just responded by telling Joly that Canada must stop interfering and criticizing China's internal affairs.

"

Members of the minority Uyghur ethnic group reported systematic torture and other degrading treatment by law enforcement officers and officials working within the penal system and internment camps.

The treatment and abuse of detainees under the liuzhi detention system, which operated outside the judicial system as a legal tool for the government and the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) to investigate corruption and other offenses by officials, featured extended solitary confinement, sleep deprivation, beatings, and forced standing or sitting in uncomfortable positions for hours and sometimes days, according to press reports.

The law stated psychiatric treatment and hospitalization should be “on a voluntary basis,” but the law failed to provide meaningful legal protections for persons who could be involuntarily committed, such as access to a lawyer or other advocate or the right to communicate with those outside the psychiatric institution.

Official media reported the Ministry of Public Security directly administered 23 psychiatric hospitals for the criminally insane. While many of those committed to mental health facilities were convicted of murder and other violent crimes, there were also reports of activists, religious or spiritual adherents, and petitioners being involuntarily subjected to psychiatric treatment for political reasons. Public security officials could commit individuals to psychiatric facilities and force treatment for “conditions” that had no basis in psychiatry.

On February 28, media reported church leaders Lian Changnian, Lian Xuliang, and Fu Juan were under RSDL throughout 2022 and were finally transferred to a detention center in February. While in RSDL, interrogators beat them, deprived them of food, blew smoke in their eyes, and denied them the use of toilets."

You still seem to be oblivious to the fact Canada has been cozying up to prolific human rights violators with multiple foreign affairs ministers for decades.

Only because it's written by partisan hack like you only you seem to think Canada just started cozying up to China a couple of days ago.

Terry Glavin should know better than to pander to this impression but you...just how old are you anyway?

Oblivious.... Do you mean because it's been pointed out several times in the thread, and the poster hasn't acknowledged it?

Because if that was happening it would seem oblivious to me. 🤔

She's trying to normalize relations. That's her job.

If you want diplomats to go about poking them with a stick, keep in mind how that woke up the Russian bear.

We should we be normalizing any kinds of relations with a communist country. Canada should be ignoring and staying away from any and every communist country. As one Stalinist stooge once said "we will sell them the rope that will be used to hang themselves with". Communists are not Canada's friend. Communism is our enemy and communists are out to destroy our rights and freedoms. We have a Marxist dictator in Ottawa that keeps showing us all that he is a communist at heart. Well over a hundred million people have been murdered by the communists in the last one hundred years.

Normalize relations my arse. 🤡

America and Nazi Zelensky woke up the Russian bear. America has been trying to start a war with Russia for decades now. A war that America will never win with Russia. A nuclear war between America and Russia will surely kill us all. Our enemy is not Russia, it is China. Believe it or not. 😇

Canada needs to stop trying to appease Communist China.  We need to stop supporting human rights violators.  Wake up and grow up!

So would you prefer someone like Giorgia Meloni, Italy's new prime minister, to Justin Trudeau?

Giorgia Meloni (Italian: [ˈdʒordʒa meˈloːni]; born 15 January 1977) is an Italian politician who has been serving as the prime minister of Italy since October 2022, the first woman to hold this position. A member of the Chamber of Deputies since 2006, she has led the right-wing Brothers of Italy (FdI) political party since 2014 and has been the president of the European Conservatives and Reformists Party since 2020. Forbes ranked Meloni as the fourth most powerful woman in the world in 2023. In 2024 she was listed among the most influential people in the world by Time magazine.
