How do people living today know how hard those things were 30 years ago?

I'll tell you how.

They were raised by parents who made much less than 100K or even 70K per year, and had a house.

In the 60's my own father made 25K per year and bought his first house...which cost him 25K.

I think when people say this, they are referring to short term measurable factors like unemployment (currently 4%), the stock market (S&P 500 earnings at all time high), inflation (currently 3.27%), and generally whether there is a recession or fear of one on the horizon (neither at the moment).

But in terms of longer-term systemic traits like poverty (around 40 million americans for decades), housing shortage (short by 6 million homes), health care costs (premiums avg about $450/mo for a 30 year old), etc I suspect people who currently profit from the system largely work to prevent these kinds of things from being fixed, which they otherwise could be.

Nationalist answered it, but the answer isn't important. What is important is the perception that all that above is true. Who do you think they'll blame?

Don't you think that if I were wrong that I would know it?

Regardless... "generations" is the timeframe here.   By the definition, this means we're talking about 1964-1984.

And it's CBS, so if you are trying to pin this on Presidents you have:

Lyndon Johnson
Richard Nixon
Gerald Ford
Jimmy Carter
Ronald Reagan
GW Bush
Bill Clinton
George Bush
Barack Obama
Donald Trump
Joe Biden

32 years of Republicans and 32 years of Democrats.

Looks like someone has a new patronizing catch phrase !

You misunderstand a few fundamental things.

1 - a generation is 20-30 years. So people are looking even at the 2000-2010 years and saying it was better for people then.

2.  It's not the president in power when times were good that they'll blame it on. they'll blame it on the guy who's in power now that things are bad. And that would be biden.  Fair or not that's who's going to wear it.

1. Yes - I took past "Generations" to mean at least 2.  And my math was wrong - it was 28 years of Dems.  But I agree with your point even if it's 1 generation.
2. Yes agreed.

But I will add this: it's fair.  The Dems and Republicans have slowly sold working people down the river over decades.  Biden has to own the situation he created, not only his administration but all the others that he participated in.
