Fossil fuels have made things in our economy cheaper and our way of life better. 

Having some inconveniences when the world market is distorted by war or other events doesn't even come close to outweighing their benefit.

And this is the problem with replacing it. 

In terms of practical usage fossil fuels are affordable, effective, versatile, extremely easy to use and highly adaptable.

And until other Technologies appear which have those same characteristics it's going to be very difficult to convince people to move away from them. Solar, for example, is extremely affordable but it's not very adaptable. It can't be used at night, it requires large panels that have to be fairly stationary, etc etc. 

It is because fossil fuels are so good at making our society successful that it is difficult to move away from them.
