How many of us as boys (or adult men) have discretely relieved ourselves outside when nature called by peeing on a tree, behind a car etc?  It’s practically a male right of passage. But in one of the Republicans’ southern shithole states it’s just the latest pretext for authorities to arrest and prosecute a 10-yr old boy, continuing their long tradition of arresting and jailing young Black children who would not even be old enough for arrest in most other western countries.

A 10-year-old Black child who urinated in a parking lot must serve three months' probation and write a two-page book report on the late NBA star Kobe Bryant, a Mississippi judge has ordered.

Tate County Youth Court Judge Rusty Harlow handed down the sentence Tuesday after the child's lawyer reached an agreement with a special prosecutor. The prosecution threatened to upgrade the charge of "child in need of supervision" to a more serious charge of disorderly conduct if the boy's family took the case to trial, said Carlos Moore, the child's attorney.

"I thought any sensible judge would dismiss the charge completely. It's just asinine," Moore said. "There were failures in the criminal justice system all the way around."

The child's mother has said her son urinated behind her vehicle while she was visiting a lawyer's office in Senatobia, Mississippi, on Aug. 10. Police officers in the town of about 8,100 residents, 40 miles (64 kilometers) south of Memphis, Tennessee, saw the child urinating and arrested him. Officers put him in a squad car and took him to the police station.

Senatobia Police Chief Richard Chandler said the child was not handcuffed, but his mother said he was put in a jail cell, according to NBCNews.com.

It was initially unclear whether prosecutors would take up the case. Moore said he had planned on going to trial, but shifted strategy after prosecutors threatened to upgrade the charges and the child's family chose to accept the probation sentence because it would not appear on the boy's criminal record. The 10-year-old is required to check in with a probation officer once per month.

Moore said he doesn't believe a white child would have been arrested under similar circumstances.

"I don't think there is a male in America who has not discreetly urinated in public," Moore said.

Marie Ndiaye, deputy director of the Justice Project at the Advancement Project, a racial justice organization, said the arrest is emblematic of broader issues in the criminal justice system.

"Sentencing anyone, let alone a young child, to probation under these facts is sure to add to the trauma and denigration this child has suffered since their arrest," Ndiaye said. "This is all the more proof that we need to severely limit police interactions with civilians, from petty retail theft to traffic stops and even so-called 'quality of life' offenses. For Black people in America, it is a matter of life and death."

And also in this week’s news if you think being a 10 year old black child in the not-so-great state of Mississhitty is tough just wait until you turn 11. 

Only in red state shithole is this kind of crap considered ok and people who don’t like to see police shooting innocent black kids for no reason are considered the real racists.

A grand jury in Mississippi determined that there was no criminal conduct on behalf of the officer who shot and wounded an 11-year-old boy in his home who had called authorities for help.

Mississippi Attorney General Lynn Fitch says her office will take no further action against Sgt. Greg Capers, the officer who shot Aderrien Murry.

The move from the Mississippi Attorney General's Office comes nearly seven months after Murry was left seriously injured after Capers shot him in the chest responding to a 911 call that Murry had made.

Nakala Murry said she told her son to call the police after the father of one of her other children came to their home in the early hours of May 20 in an "irate" mood. 

After arriving at the Murry family home, police instructed everyone inside to come out with their hands up. Nakala Murry says that's when the 11-year-old emerged from around a corner, running toward the door. Capers then opened fire, according to the family.

Following the incident, Murry suffered a collapsed lung, fractured rib and lacerated liver.

In May, his family filed a $5 million federal lawsuit, which argues that the police officers who responded to the domestic disturbance call acted in a way that was "so outrageous that it shocks the moral and legal conscience of the community."

Let's see. You do not like the idea of police disciplining an animal for urinating in public, but you have no problem with THOUSANDS of animals in San Francisco TAKING A DUMP ON THE SIDEWALKS. You have no problem with a police officer doing the job of a negligent mother, but you have no problem with gangs ruling the streets of LA.

This is not a commentary on should. You know that it happens on a daily basis in every town and city. There are a lot of things that folks should not do but they do it anyways. The OP shows his racism by only pointing out when blacks do these less than civilized acts. Conveniently forgetting that whites, hispanics, and every one else are equally guilty.

To me the whole 'black' thing is a red herring.  A 10 year old kid got taken for a police ride and has to write a book report.

Now - some would say that's over the top for the horrible 'crime' of peeing.  Others would say that if you punish that kind of behavior young there's research that shows you tend to nip even worse behavior in the bud later (a practice then mayor of new york guliani made use of very successfully before he got old and went bonkers).

So that's a reasonable debate to have.

Yes, people are stupid. They are equally stupid in San Francisco and Gabbs, NV. You do not magically get smarter because you move from Seattle, WA to McCammon, Idaho. Big cities rightfully so get a bad reputation for drugs. However, go to isolated small town America and open your eyes.. lots of meth, opioids, and the derivatives of those. I have never seen meth out in the open as much as I did in Kellogg, Idaho.

Ok, I stand corrected. The OP that i am referring to is R10. He is not the OP.

Went to a beer festival in Southern California once. You would have thought that the bathrooms were out of commission. It was both comical and sad that grown adults could not figure out that they were urinating next to the porta potty.

1. Yes, pretty much the whole point of being male

2. In younger days I urinated outdoors many times--discretely and otherwise--behind trees, on trees, behind cars, on cars, in alleyways and off balconies, etc. Good times!

3. I'd do it today if the right opportunity presented itself!

4. I've never urinated in a parking garage, which is more sketchy, but it's a lawyer's office, so I'd give it a pass.

5. Utterly ridiculous to arrest a 10-year old for any of the above, and  doubly so to charge them. Grown-ups know better, but sometimes a kid has just got to go.

Sigh...I don't know about this kid but, I was in San Francisco a year ago and urine is the least of their problems. We left Macy's after a nice shopping spree and dinner, only to have to watch our step leaving as some lovely person had left a pile of feces right at the door.

San Francisco... a lesson in priorities. Basically, it is NIMBYism at its best. Downtown is full of very wealthy, young, affluent types who really want nothing to do with the homeless. As a result.. there are few public bathrooms, no shelters, and they have no plan on how to deal with them. Why do they come to SF and not somewhere else? Money.. These rich folks in SF have more money than what they would encounter in Sacramento, Vacaville, etc. As for the police.. they are simply inundated and so focusing on someone defecating in public is of lower priority than traffic accidents, robberies, assaults, and so on. In Reno, we tried being relaxed and understanding but that proved to be a faulty strategy. The homeless camps started encroaching upon parks and private residences. All in all.. the city learned that you have to prioritize keeping this in check.
