Martin and chretien downloaded some costs onto the provinces but very little actually got cut. If anything there's been more and more spending per capita. Chretien and Martin massively cut budgets and downloaded to provinces, and provinces did the same and downloaded to municipalities. Many provincial leaders like Mike Harris and Ralph Klein were even worse. Canada’s crumbling infrastructure, healthcare, mushrooming class room sizes etc have been constant news stories for decades. Most services have been severely underfunded for long periods Trudeaus spending increases have been largely on new programs not shoring up the critically underfunded ones which will take decades and multiple prime ministers to fix Edited December 9, 2023 by BeaverFever Quote

That's not austerity. That's just downloading to the provinces. They also took 70 billion dollars out of the UI fund, but that's not austerity either. Gov't services were still pretty strong during those periods. 34 minutes ago, BeaverFever said: Most services have been severely underfunded for long periods That's not even a little bit true. It's what people on the left tell themeslves to justify feeling miserable and their self pity. If anything we've done fairly well. But - what we have done for sure is drive business and investment away from canada and that severely impacts our quality of life - we need to attract it back and be more competative, which leads to things like higher wages, and more tax dollars, and more homes being built etc etc. You don't get there by gov't spending primarily.
