I don’t think you understand that NATO membership requires unanimous NATO member support AND it obligated all NATO members to come to the military aid of any other member who is attacked… meaning that bringing Ukraine into NATO would immediately put the US and Western Europe into war with Russia.  That simply will not happen unless another NATO member is attacked.  Putin is trying to make the West culpable by annexing eastern Ukraine.
