Onatrio Gr.6 Math Scores Dismal

Recommended Posts

It has been recently reported that only half of Ontario grade 6 students meet provincial math standards. Are teachers to blame? The government mandated curriculum? Parents? Technology distraction? This seems like a serious issue, but I wonder how many people actually pay attention. I doubt this is just an Ontario issue. Kudos for Ontario for actually having some statistics. I guess I understand why teacher unions and teachers dislike standardized tests. Here are a number of links with many following comments.

Right wingers refuse to do anything about the way the left is constantly ruining the world, especially for the children.

This isn't a political issue. Public education is in trouble in 9 of 10 provinces with Quebec being the exception. Liberals, Conservatives, and the NDP are equally to blame.....or those who run the provincial departments of education, who keep their jobs regardless of party in power.

Public education is in trouble because of the incredibly stupid ways we have been teaching children for hundreds of years. Pretty much everything taught about the English language is a lie, which adults repeat and the lies continue for centuries.

Math isn't taught to be useful, children aren't shown how to take their rote learning and use it in the real world.

French is taught in the worst way imaginable so instead of having highly bilingual people we produce totally incompetent people. "Teaching" French is a total waste of time, not because it's not valuable, as learning any 2nd, 3rd or fourth language is a very good thing, but because the manner in which it is taught is a total waste of time, because few become truly competent in French.

History is one huge lie, meant only to put a shine of a pile of shit.

For most of school and schooling there is almost no connection to reality.

Can you clarify what you mean?

Canadian students do well on international assessments, better in language than Math but still very good.

https://www.cmec.ca/580/Programs-and-Initiatives/Assessment/Trends-in-International-Mathematics-and-Science-Study-(TIMSS)/Canadian-Results-—-Grade-8/index.html

Ontario students did better than the national average on Pan-Canadian assessments:

Canadian adults have among the highest average education levels of any country.

So I find your blanket statement quite odd. What are you basing that on?

What blanket statement? Latest grade 6 math tests show half of Ontario's grade 6 students aren't meeting standards. That is a fact.

Over the years, the test results that you have linked have been declining.

That statement.

What is your evidence for that?

MY Op is about math. Let's compare the PISA results of Quebec and Ontario in mathematics going back to 2003. These are the scores on the PISA tests for mathematics by 15 year olds. The higher the number, the better the score.

2003 Ontario 530 Quebec 537

2006 Ontario 526 Quebec 540

2009 Ontario - 526 Quebec 543

2012 Ontario - 514  Quebec 536

2015 Ontario - 509    Quebec - 544

As you can see, Ontario's performance in math is in steady decline. These are the PISA results that you cited. Why is Ontario struggling in math?

What is your evidence for saying this?

If you really are 'Cum laude' you'll back up what you say.

Otherwise you're just 'sum loude'. :P

Take a look at the PISA results you cited. Quebec #1, all the other in decline. You ignore the facts I provided. What's your opinion on why Ontario's math scores have consistently dropped? That is what this thread is about, which you haven't addressed. Stay focused, jacee, stay focused.

Also, anyone who pays even minimal attention realizes that public education is becoming a joke.

Ya so we should have more private 'free market' education so we can score in the 400's like the US, instead of the top 10 where we are now.

Here's a graphic for PISA Math (dots are countries):

.........CA............................US............................

I don't mind having an intelligent discussion on this topic, but your blanket propaganda statements smearing public education just don't make the grade in that respect.

I guess that's one way of avoiding the stats that I produced showing that math education in Ontario is in decline. The latest grade 6 math test results prove my  point. Yet, you decide to dodge the issue.

So, in your opinion, jacee, why is the performance of Ontario students in math in a state of steady decline. That's the question. Enough with your immature dodging of the math results. The steady use of Emojis don't make you right.

Oh, you're getting defensive. You must be a teacher or have family members who are teachers.

Ontario to review school curriculum as student math scores decline

TORONTO -- Ontario is looking to overhaul its school curriculum with a focus on math, an announcement that comes one week after standardized test results showed flat or falling math scores among public elementary students.

Premier Kathleen Wynne announced Wednesday that the government will start public consultations to modernize the curriculum.

"There's a lot of work that has to be done in the math curriculum," she said. "We know there are challenges with the math curriculum. Even though we've got great staff and we've put lots of money into the teaching of math, still there's something going on there that we're just not feeling like we're seeing the results that we should."

Discovery Method is to blame.

Read the comments after the article I cite below. People are paying a lot of money to have their kids tutored after school. This is a travesty, and further adds to the fact that public education needs to end.
