Neither is attacking someone who's been there and understands. While it's a sad situation, many of my freinds who were also affected in Fort Mac are happy to make donations to the Red Cross for BC, the entire country supported us and it's nice to be able to give back to the same ones who helped us. 1 Quote "There are two different types of people in the world - those who want to know and those who want to believe." ~~ Friedrich Nietzsche ~~

cannuck Posted August 2, 2017 Report Posted August 2, 2017 I do feel sorry for those who have been displaced, dispossessed or even just inconvenienced, but there is another side to this story. Coniferous forests have been burning forever - and some species require fire to release their seeds. We build houses out of kindling in areas that are heavily forested, and the put out the fires that would naturally make them more stable and then everyone is surprised when a really hot fire consumes their kindling structure. Kind of like those who build homes at ground level on a flood plane, then get flooded out. Couldn't see that one coming. BTW: I would like to see the numbers for contribution of forest fires to the CO2 issue that the climate changers think is due to cars driving to work. Quote

cannuck Posted September 23, 2017 Report Posted September 23, 2017 No time to get a lot of detail, but it looks as if forest fires in Canada average 20-40% of our total emissions. Ft. Mac alone was over 10% at 700,000+ tonnes, but before that Indonesia forest fire spewed out over a billion tonnes. Quote

Traditionally, they conducted controlled burns to rejuvenate mixed forests and to protect their communities. I also think there's another factor: replanting with monoculture - 'industrial forests'. I remember when there was no replanting and environmentalists protested and demanded replanting. We got it ... but forestry companies replanted only one species that they could harvest in ~20 years. I think that's what's burning out of control with no diversity among the trees to slow it down ... the monoculture ... industrial 'forests' that aren't real forests at all, but 'tree farms'. cannuck Posted September 25, 2017 Report Posted September 25, 2017 Most indigenous "controlled burns" I have experienced have been done to relieve 90% unemployment on reserves (they get hired as fire fighters). Your point about monoculture is very appropriate. If we ever thought about actually becoming sustainable in our lifestyle, we would stop building homes from kindling wood. Such structures last only a century at best, if the termites, carpenter ants, rot or fire doesn't get them first. We could easily build permanent structures for residential use (one of my good friends in Morocco lives in a 600 year old home and walks on sidewalks laid before Christ was a baby) if we took our collective head out of our arse. 1 Quote

Happens to be exactly what I am doing (building better buildings, not keeping my ugly mouth shut, of course). It has taken years of research, and fortunately, the changes to the NBC (originally written around stick-built, but not quite inspiring innovation yet) make it possible. Quite a few unpleasant surprises as we transition from thinking about stuff to trying to make the technologies work. Edited September 26, 2017 by cannuck Quote
