Despite finally being open about it on Tuesday, Democratic Institutions Minister Maryam Monsef wanted to keep her recent trip to Iran and Afghanistan “hush-hush,” according to an interview she did after returning to Canada in 2014.

In a YouTube interview with Mike Judson, dated December 6, 2014, Judson said “you had just done a visit back to Afghanistan, and it was kind of hush-hush.”

“Yeah,” replied Monsef.

“Do you still want that visit to remain hush-hush?” asked Judson.

“Sort of,” replied Monsef. “Not because of safety,” she said, although she didn’t explain why she wanted the trip to remain “hush-hush.”

Monsef said she was in Iran and planned to cross into Afghanistan by car. When they arrived at the border, however, the situation seemed unsafe.

When Monsef was appointed into Trudeau’s cabinet in late 2015, she was vetted by the RCMP and CSIS. One of the requirements for security clearance is to disclose all foreign travel within a ten-year period.

Did Monsef disclose her trips to Iran and Afghanistan? Was the Prime Minister’s Office aware of Monsef’s extensive travel history in the region, in 2010, 2013 and 2014? Did they know about her Afghan passport?

Or was the whole thing kept “hush-hush”? More.....

Something is very fishing here. This lady needs to stepped down now. And the government needs to answer some questions about her and her trips. Other have been deported by the liberals for the same or less..

Why would travel to these places automatically disqualify someone from being a Minister?  What's the insinuation of why she traveled there?  Are you saying she went and fought for the Taliban or something?

I find it funny (odd) that the Toronto Sun is the only media outlet that seems to be reporting about this...  and never really says in their articles why these trips seem to be so troubling to them...

What on earth is so fishy about this?

She has a record of being secretive about her history in Iran/Afghanistan.  First it recently comes out she was born in Iran, not Afghanistan, and now it comes out that she wanted to keep her recent trip to Iran/Afghanistan on the down-low.

Do I believe her and her mother when she claims that she only recently found out about her true birthplace?  No I don't, she doesn't get the benefit of the doubt.  Interesting it comes to light shortly after she wins election and is named cabinet minister in a majority government where she won't have to face re-election in 4-5 years..  This woman is the Democratic Institutions Minister and yet she's seems about as transparent as a brick wall.  I am not naive.

Why does she not get the benefit of the doubt?  It was confirmed at the time that such occurrences are quite common.

Why should she?  It's also quite common for people to fudge the truth on their immigration applications.  Everyone is investigated and have to produce documents for IRCC/CIC before becoming a permanent resident. They have to produce police certificates, medical checks, birth certificates, passports etc. "Oh sorry I'm a refugee I lost my daughter's birth certificate" or "she's from Afghanistan and our village didn't produce certificates" or whatever excuse her mom likely made when applying.

She's also a politician, and none of them deserve the benefit of the doubt.  Ever.  Especially one who now has 2 cases of something looking a bit suspicious.  This woman was a proud Afghan refugee and sold herself as such publicly, and her mother never corrected her?  Her mother lied to her all this time?  Why?

She said her mother, Soriya Basir, never felt it was important to tell Ms. Monsef and her sisters Mehrangiz and Mina that they were not born in Afghanistan.

“For her, it didn’t matter because in our culture, it’s who your parents are who determine your nationality, and by law, legally, even though I was born in Iran, that doesn’t change my Afghan citizenship. So for her, it wasn’t relevant,” Ms. Monsef said.

For years, Ms. Monsef’s mother allowed her daughter to misrepresent her birthplace as she built a political base in Peterborough, including a failed run for mayor in 2014 and her successful win in last year’s general election. Her mother was in the House of Commons in January when Ms. Monsef delivered her maiden speech in which she spoke about being born in “a place at war, where human rights were not respected, where educating women was not allowed.”

Ms. Monsef said her mother is “now sorry” that she never told her three daughters the truth.

Her mom is clearly a liar.  Maybe her daughter doesn't fall far from the tree?  I want to see proof of everything.

Worse than that: blame Monsef for something that she may have had no control over.

I believe my mother when she tells me where I was born. I am fortunate enough to have a birth certificate and a father to "prove" it.

Not all of us are this lucky.

My gawd though.

To think we're in a society where if one's mother has lied then let's blame the child and, hey, she's probably a liar too...

Yes.  I'm assuming it's possible her story could all be BS

Maybe she 100% had no idea about her birth.  We don't know.  But now she's saying she wanted to keep her trip to Iran and Afghanistan a secret.  She's clearly an innocent victim here and I'm just crazy to be suspicious about the whole thing!  Shame on me.

We  Don't know.

I also doubt it's a crime to keep on the low that she visited her former refugee homelands. Especially if she disclosed the trip as was necessary in any filings she was required to make.

We live in a country where we have too many people like you: quick to judgement and damn the facts.

Thats a far bigger issue for me than whether or not she was in a country or two.

She is a minister in our government and we have the right to know everything about that minster. The liberals have deported people this yr for the same offence, she needs to step down now until we know all the facts. Just imagine if this was a Harper minster.

What offence?  Did she join ISIS while she was there?

We dont know, nobody seems to know anything about this girl. But if you want a conspiracy, then how about she happens to be in on changing the election process , to a process that will allow any party a chance to get power in this country. I do not doubt if this change goes thru ,we will have a Islamic party pop up, and then the country is screwed. All the l;iberal are doing is playing with fire. 150 yrs of stable government which made this country the greatest in the world ,will be gone. And we will never get it back.

And what started this whole story squid, it was her birth certificate. Quit trying to change the channel. This is a serious affair going on and I want her to step down until she is fully and properly vetted.

But but but a new born/child/kid should know their birthplace.

They should just feel it!

What I have been reading she knew before she said she did. That is why she needs to stepped down until a investigation is done. And if it is just a mistake and she did not lie, she gets her job back.

that should be the way things are done in an open democratic society.  but it appears that special privilege is being granted to certain members of parliament based on ethnic, aboriginal, (or maybe even gender), status.  is that really what we want?
