Boges Posted September 20, 2016 Report Posted September 20, 2016 (edited) Yeah this type of stuff routinely happens to white people. Unarmed black man with his hands up, 4 cops with guns raised. Must have been a mortal threat! http://www.nytimes.com/2016/09/20/us/video-released-in-terence-crutchers-killing-by-tulsa-police.html?_r=0 During the encounter, which took place around 7:40 p.m. Friday, Terence Crutcher, 40, was shot once and killed by Betty Shelby, a Tulsa police officer since 2011, after the police received reports of an abandoned vehicle blocking a road, the department said. Video recorded by a police helicopter and a patrol car’s dashboard camera shows Mr. Crutcher raising his hands, walking toward a car and leaning against it. He was then Tasered by one officer, Tyler Turnbough, and fatally shot by Officer Shelby, the department said, though the view from both cameras is obstructed in the moments before those actions. Tulsa’s police chief, Chuck Jordan, said at a news conference Monday that Mr. Crutcher was unarmed and did not have a weapon in his vehicle. Shane Tuell, a police spokesman, said Officer Shelby gave a statement to homicide detectives on Monday morning. She is on paid administrative leave, the department said. As long as this shit keeps happening, BLM is going to have a point. What a disgrace! Edited September 20, 2016 by Boges Quote

Argus Posted September 20, 2016 Report Posted September 20, 2016 (edited) Yeah this type of stuff routinely happens to white people. Probably not, because the white guy would have cooperated with police, not told them to FO and then walked back to his car while ignoring orders to stop. That being said it looks unjustified to me. It might be another example of what happened in Miami, where a cop pointing a gun at a guy was startled when another cop fired his tazer and shot the guy himself, killing him. cybercoma Posted September 20, 2016 Report Posted September 20, 2016 Probably not, because the white guy would have cooperated with police....Except for those examples we've seen with black people complying and still getting shot. But let's ignore that and pretend it's the victim's fault and pretend that how the cops react to a white person is exactly the same. It's not like people haven't posts studies showing how police are quick to escalate violence against black men even when it's not deadly. It's pretty easy to ignore it when you have the white privilege to do so. When complying with the cops typically doesn't get your head smashed into the concrete or a bullet put in your chest. For black people, they don't have that "luxury" because the colour of their skin instantly makes them a bigger threat to coward pigs with badges and guns. Quote

WestCoastRunner Posted September 20, 2016 Report Posted September 20, 2016 (edited) It does. We just don't hear about it because it is not 'newsworthy'. In 2015, Washington Post created a real-time database to track fatal police shootings: "As of Sunday, 1,502 people have been shot and killed by on-duty police officers since Jan. 1, 2015. Of them, 732 were white, and 381 were black (and 382 were of another or unknown race)." "But as data scientists and policing experts often note, comparing how many or how often white people are killed by police to how many or how often black people are killed by the police is statistically dubious unless you first adjust for population." "According to the most recent census data, there are nearly 160 million more white people in America than there are black people. White people make up roughly 62 percent of the U.S. population but only about 49 percent of those who are killed by police officers. African Americans, however, account for 24 percent of those fatally shot and killed by the police despite being just 13 percent of the U.S. population. As The Post noted in a new analysis published last week, that means black Americans are 2.5 times as likely as white Americans to be shot and killed by police officers." "U.S. police officers have shot and killed the exact same number of unarmed white people as they have unarmed black people: 50 each. But because the white population is approximately five times larger than the black population, that means unarmed black Americans were five times as likely as unarmed white Americans to be shot and killed by a police officer." "The study also sought to answer whether officers were more likely to shoot and kill someone who is unarmed if the shooting happened to occur in a high-crime area. They concluded that is not the case." “The only thing that was significant in predicting whether someone shot and killed by police was unarmed was whether or not they were black,” said Justin Nix, a criminal-justice researcher at the University of Louisville and one of the report’s authors, said in April. “Crime variables did not matter in terms of predicting whether the person killed was unarmed.” “This just bolsters our confidence that there is some sort of implicit bias going on,” Nix said. “Officers are perceiving a greater threat when encountered by unarmed black citizens.” https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/post-nation/wp/2016/07/11/arent-more-white-people-than-black-people-killed-by-police-yes-but-no/?utm_term=.ad6c463bbf53 Edited September 20, 2016 by WestCoastRunner Quote I love to see a young girl go out and grab the world by the lapels. TimG Posted September 20, 2016 Report Posted September 20, 2016 (edited) But as data scientists and policing experts often note, comparing how many or how often white people are killed by police to how many or how often black people are killed by the police is statistically dubious unless you first adjust for population. It is not enough to correct for percentage of population. You have to correct for the likelyhood of being involved in a crime. Once you correct for that the disproportionality disappears in the national stats but there are some areas where problems exist. Officers are perceiving a greater threat when encountered by unarmed black citizens. According to FBI stats, 40% of cop killers are black. So cops have a valid reason to perceive a greater threat. None of this should excuse trigger happy cops who don't seem to understand how to deescalate situation. But trying to make this into a race issue will only lead to counter productive solutions (such as cops refusing to enforce the law in place where they are likely to have to confront armed black men). THAT's the issue about police-brutality which you fail to acknowledge and continue to blame the victim for. I haven't ever denied that police brutality occurs. I haven't ever said that such shootings are justified. I've posted repeatedly about my opposition to the militarization of policing and spoke approvingly of the British policing style of doing their best to defuse situations. I've also spoken in favour of policecams. But all of that still doesn't change the fact that if you do as you're told and obey the law - as Chris Rock says - you probably won't have to worry about getting shot. WestCoastRunner Posted September 20, 2016 Report Posted September 20, 2016 This link will help to explain the myth that: (if anyone wants to bother to read it) “The police often say that the police are where the crime is as a way to suggest that the reason that they are more violent in certain communities is because they have to be there because the communities are more violent,” DeRay Mckesson, a member of Campaign Zero’s planning team and one of the most prominent voices in the Black Lives Matter movement, told The Huffington Post. “We wanted to see how the data matched to that suggestion, and what we saw is that it doesn’t.” “It just reminds us that the police are choosing to be violent in communities,” he added." “This myth that people have created that community violence is the cause of police violence is absolutely false,” said Brittany Packnett, another member of Campaign Zero’s planning team, who also sat on Missouri Gov. Jay Nixon’s (D) Ferguson Commission. “This is an issue of policy, of accountability and of culture inside of departments.” Quote I love to see a young girl go out and grab the world by the lapels. TimG Posted September 20, 2016 Report Posted September 20, 2016 The police often say that the police are where the crime is as a way to suggest that the reason that they are more violent in certain communities is because they have to be there because the communities are more violent,A strawman. That is not the argument being offered. The argument is that police interact with people in the course of their duties and they interact with a larger percentage of black people because black people are disproportionately involved in criminal activity (largely because they are disproportionately poorer but the reasons for that are separate issue). BC_chick Posted September 20, 2016 Report Posted September 20, 2016 (edited) I think what TimG is trying to say is innocent black people get killed regardless of where they are or what they're doing because somewhere out there some other black people are committing crime.
