Those of us with standards have a different opinion. Especially those who pay taxes.

Our government sets standards for Canada - you set standards for yourself. Speak for yourself and your standards - especially when you choose to hide who you are. Lots of far right wing "heritage" organizations who agree with you - they are considered racist.

Now we are getting somewhere, you aren't just kissing it off anymore.

I never was - I simply said that you need to show me evidence before I'd think changes were necessary.

I guess it's only when you evolve into an Earthling that you realize just how picayune all this citizenship stuff sounds, especially in a global economy.

How does trashing the earth make you an evolved earthling?

These assaults on anchor babies are incredibly racist.

These assaults on people who are already Canadians are racist. If they weren't racist, then they would stay in their own countries. Why are these Chinese so racist that they consider their country not good enough to have their children be citizens there? Racists.

A good portion of houses bought in Vancouver...and by people of Chinese decent are listed as students or housewives. A child can own a house - one of these toddlers can actually have their name on a million dollar house in Vancouver - or Toronto (as is also a problem). If anyone can't connect the dots , they're obviously pretty thick.

Are the Japanese racist for not letting in immigrants?

How many immigrants are permitted Chinese citizenship?

It's completely ridiculous. The angst about all this. Watch out. The Asians are coming!!!

Was it ridiculous that the Natives were appalled when the Europeans come? Was it ridiculous when the Greeks were appalled that the Persians were pouring in? It is not ridiculous to defend your country. There are 1.3 billion Chinese if they hadn't completely ruined their own environment, they wouldn't need to overrun our country.

AFAIK Chinese couples are not allowed to have more than 2 children. Could it be possible that couples expecting a 3rd child come to Canada to have the child in order to NOT register the birth in China. The 3rd child would defacto not exist in China but would hold Canadian citizenship. That child with Canadian citizenship would then be in a position to set up residency, sponsor mom, dad and 2 siblings under family reunification at a later date.

Or...anyone eligible could immigrate here and do the exact same thing. But they wouldn't have to wait nearly as long. There is an assumption that the child holding canadian citizenship will actually do that in 20 years time. They could very well have no interest in doing so. And if they do have the interest Big Effin Deal because without the granted citizenship they could do they exact same thing.

That would require them to hide the child away while in China. Difficult to do if flying in to Hong Kong and going through customs with a new born in tow.

Since when did plugging a loophole become "an overhaul of the system"?

Its not a loophole. It is what the system allows. Anyone born here gets Canadian citizenship. There is no loophole.

So, do you think anyone who can get across the border to a poling booth should be allowed to vote in Canadian elections or should we just let them do it online from anywhere?

As opposed to multinational corporations telling our politicians what to do, sure.

Not according to Chinese law as I read it. Children of Chinese nationals born offshore are automatically Chinese citizens. The only way around it is if at least one of the parents is a permanent resident of another country that grants citizenship at birth.

Of course, China could conveniently overlook its own laws for the right people. It's been known to happen.

Any law that is used for an unintended purpose is a loophole. That is why it is called a loophole.

And what is the unintended purpose? Has this granting of citizenship been used for unintended purpose?

The granting of citizenships of convenience. We want people who want to be Canadians, not those who want to use us as an out if things go sour where they really live. Why do you care so much about people who would just use and abuse our generosity?

Lordy, I'm retired on a government pension, I use and abuse your generosity every day by merely continuing to exist. Who the hell doesn't use and abuse your generosity? An immigrant no matter the source is a user and abuser of your generosity?

ETA: sorry, didn't address your first sentence. "The granting of citizenships of convenience"

Is that a special class of citizenship? Do the documents say "Canadian Citizen of Convenience"? or do the documents say "Canadian Citizen."?

Don't you find it convenient to be a Canadian? I do. Makes my life sooo much easier. Is it ever inconvenient ?

This citizenship of convenience is meaningless prattle much like the supposed value of Canadian citizenship that increases or diminishes depending on unknowable unpredictable factors.

This is not a new issue.

If people are worried about anchor babies leading to them and their families draining Canadan tax payer of funds must say two things.

1. It is because of a crappy multitiered social safety net that would be better served by a social credit system and guarenteed employment for benefits where the person is able to perform social functions.

2. These chinese people have put millions and millions of dollars into Canada in real estate investments.Making a whole lot of money for government in form of property taxes and other levies.

Why does you being retired on a government pension make you an abuser of Canada or my generosity?

So give Canadian citizenship to anyone who asks for it. Why make them go to the inconvenience of coming to Canada just long enough to have a child?
