The dashcam only shows the initial part of the confrontation, including her refusal to put out the cigarette and her refusal to get out of the car. After that they moved off camera, where we don't really know for sure what happened. The next we saw she was already on the ground with the two cops over her. According to police she kicked him in the shin and resisted arrest. I can't say one way or another, but logically, why would he put her on the ground if there weren't some further point of confrontation between them?

And yes, I agree that he should have de-escelated. There is a woeful lack of that effort in many of these incidents on the part of police, unfortunately.

That does not make her any less an idiot, though.

Apparently you didn't watch the dashcam. He is the idiot who escalated this beyond reason, and we have seen lot's of examples of it before. But go drink the koolaid, just leave your rights at the door.

My wife got a speeding ticket last week....no big deal. No tears....no drama....paid the $226 fine online. Easy breezy.....

She is alleged to have kicked the officer while resisting arrest. She could have beat the rap, but chose suicide instead. Dumb

Well if the Canadian hug-a-thug criminal justice system can take 8 years, I am sure that a city in Texas can take a few months.

Maybe you should (well of course you would't) but your police forces should take a look at what you so stupidly refer to as "hug a thug", and they could see how much more effective, as well as lest costly than that fill the cells at all costs nonsense you have down there. Of course the likes of Haliburton won't like it.

My son is a police officer so I am very much pro police. What really bothers me is police officers who's actions negate the good work the great majority of them do. I can't blindly support officers who make my kid look bad and he doesn't either. Top of my list would be guys like Monty Robinson who are not only screw ups but manipulators.

Maybe I am being hard on this guy in Texas. Policing is a stressful job and who knows what else is going on in his life that might have made him behave this way. All I can think of when I watch that video is, WTF are you doing, turning a warning for a minor traffic violation into a world wide news event. All you had to do was say, I was only going to give you a warning but if you are going to be difficult, I'm giving you a ticket instead. License and registration please. Case closed. Point made.

Unlike BC, I'm afraid I can't look at this woman's suicide as just being "dumb". In the past two months, two of our long serving police members have committed suicide. One was found by his 15 year old son and the other used to board her horse in our barn, was a mentor of our son when he was trying to become an officer and a great help to my wife when I was away working on the other side of the world. My son was so upset he could barely speak when he called to tell me. These weren't weak people, they were strong people who were very good at their jobs but seemed incapable of helping themselves or letting others help them while they were helping everyone else.

Since then I have done a lot of thinking about what could bring someone like that to the point where they would take their own lives, but never having felt that way myself, all I know is that it must be a very dark place.

Well, gee, I guess you're not expecting much polite discussion, then.

I think Bland acted like an idiot. People should try not to act like idiots when dealing with police.

If most of the time people didn't routinely and more or less without question obey police there'd be a serious societal disorder problem. And the police didn't kill her; she offed herself.

I think police in Canada in general are much better trained than in the states. For one thing the racism seems less prevalent, and for another I think they do a much better job at de-escalating situations they are called to. And yes, calling this woman's suicide ( if that's what it was) dumb, is of course, dumb. But consider the source.

You know, the few interactions I have had with American police officers have been very reasonable and civil so perhaps race is a real issue. I don't know.

It's a stupid and pointless escalation of force that started with her refusal to put out a cigarette in her own car.

But I don't know why she chose to kill herself in custody or how that is the fault of the cops.

That's my view as well.

There's no need for the cop to order her out of the car, and there's no need for him to order her to put out the cigarette. He made a big deal about the cigarette because he felt like being an asshole. That's it.

I think basically you just need to be careful around cops for the same reason you need to be careful around pit-bulls. You have no way of telling whether he's well trained or he's a stupid vicious animal, but it's better to be safe than sorry.

Oh. It was a polite request? She had the option to decline the request?

If declining a request results in you getting cuffed and jailed for 3 days, it's not actually a request.

There are so many things wrong with this. Why is there no discussion on the questionnaires regarding her suicidal tendencies. Why did they not check up on her within the regulated times. They didn't check on her for over 2 hours. And also, she missed her first day on the job that she was clearly excited about. This bozo destroyed her life.

She did not comply with his lawful order to exit the car. Dumb #2.

It's in no way clear the request was lawful. Nothing I can see shows the cop had reason to fear her, or that there was a clear indication that a crime was being committed. Outside of that he has no authority to order her out of her car.

I would suggest Big Guy your last comment once again is not on topic but a personal passive aggressive insult at Bush showing once again you won't debate the issue, but will turn this thread into a name calling episode. Knock it off. Discuss the thread issue just once.

For all you arm chair experts watching the video-you clearly have preconceived ideas about the role of police, then watch the video, confirming your biases that police are bullies, then allow your emotions to dictate the rest.

Its precisely why I would argue none of you using this video to advance your own biases about the role of the police have the impartiality to assess what went down.

Your blaming the police for her suicide is nonsensical. If as I am to believe this individual has no role in her suicide or her altercation with the police, I would live in a world of make believe where any of you can do whatever you want without consequence because its someone else's fault.

This theory of entitlement some of you have that you can act like a jack ass and you are not responsible, is a crock.

You also have zero proof of racism but some of you throw out the race card with zero proof the altercation could have occurred identically with any human not just this one.

The point may of you miss and now Big Guy wants to get in Bush's personal space about is this-we all get stopped by police. Driving is a privilege not a right. If you run into a rude police officer and we all do, no your fighting with them is not a right. No their being rude does not give you the right to be equally as rude.

The police officer being rude is one legal issue. You being rude is another. One is not automatically erased by the other and the officer's rudeness does not confer the right on you to break the law and interfere with or obstruct a police officer.

Take their badge no. down, write down what happened, and consult a lawyer as to how to file a complaint.

Hold your tongue. Behave like an adult not some entitled brat.

Those of you who want to justify being angry and having tantrums are engaging in passive aggressive behavior. You are not victims. You have choices on how to react and empower yourself in situations of abuse-the question is do you want to empower yourself or lower yourself to having a tantrum? We all have been there and lost it. We all know losing it won't help matters. So why engage in some half assed whining session suggesting we can blame it away? How does that help this woman? How does it help this woman using her death as an excuse for someone of you to feel brave to piss on police and make unfounded and unproven allegations of racism? How will that help genuine victims of racism? It won't.

This use of this video to smeer all police is a crock.

This reflects as to what this police officer did no one else. How many tapes were shown on this thread of police officers where they were polite and spit on and abused by people they stopped? Will those of you now pissing on cops admit let alone show such videos? Of course not. You won't discuss all the issues, just the ones that suit your anti police biases.]]

Will your threads show how police are shot dead on routine stops of cars? Of course not. But some of you with zero proof will yell out racism!

Who are we kidding. This is a piss on cops session using this video as pretext to incite a cluster phack on cops and the usual jup on the bandwagon.

The woman probably had what is called a border line personality disorder-a phenomena where the individual cann easily be pushed or triggered into destructive behavior.

Its sad what happened. Exploiting her death for some of you to be able to piss on cops won't help.

As some said finding new and better ways to defuse conflict is the lesson to be learned not stereotyping police with stereotypes. That is no more helpful that ridiculing this woman. It won't help.

So we should give cops a cookie for doing their job correctly?

They're usually very well compensated for what they do. And with crime on the decline I predict they'll need to justify their existence by harassing people like this more and more.

This is a major problem in Canada, where emergency services compensation is out of control.

Yes...we also give them a big funeral procession when they are killed on the job.
