Does the Sandra Bland story outrage you?

Recommended Posts

I don't understand the outrage, she was put in jail and decided to kill herself. She looked pretty unstable at the arrest site and proved it by hanging herself. Maybe society could've helped her earlier, but the cop pegged her as unstable...and guess what? She was.

The outrage is she should never have been put in jail.

Many people shouldn't be put in jail, and they get their day in court to prove it. If you decide not to follow the orders given to by a cop, should he just send you on your way?

Hmmm, this might be a good strategy, act like a hysterical lunatic and the cop must let you go.

Should you not be entitled to question if the order the cop is giving you is lawful?

police

a. A body of government employees trained in methods of law enforcement and crime prevention and detection and authorized to maintain the peace, safety, and order of the community.

"authorized to maintain the peace, safety, and order of the community". The cop was doing what he is required to do, police.

It is totally applicable.

It would have been applicable if he had stopped her, written her a ticket, then tried to get her to stay while he searched the car or brought in a dog to smell it. And even then it would only be applicable in denying the fruits of the search. But none of that happened.

Since most people have no idea what is or is not a lawful order, for the most part, no. Nor can you tell him to stand there and wait while you call your lawyer.

This is not rocket science. When you're told to get out of the damn car, you get out of the damn car.

Nope. It would be applicable in that the cop extended the detainment for no apparent reason. None shows in the video, and none was discussed by the cop.

Well that's up to you. I don't know why the righties seem to think that because you hang a tin badge and a blue shirt on someone that you should surrender your lawful rights to them. But go ahead.

Really, you don't think she was a little unreasonable? I can tell you first hand, if she was a man, she wouldn't have been given so many chances.

Her activities were completely within her rights, including continuing to smoke. His were in excess of his authority. I see the family has launched a suit and the dashcam video will help insure they win.

Disorderly conduct, obstruction and harassment are arrestable offences - you choose. Then she followed up with resisting arrest. I think she even kicked and spit on him, but i'm not really sure. He could've thought (and why not) that she on drugs. No, she deserved to go to jail.
