Just from what I've seen, MLW has been moderated pretty well the last while, especially considering all the mania that happens on here during a federal election campaign. So kudos to them for the most part on that. That doesn't mean other people might not have valid criticisms of things I haven't experienced myself.

My only complaint was that the mods were a little overzealous on locking topics, especially ones that seemed to encourage good debate but didn't fit what they saw as fitting the criteria for a good OP. And some topics were locked without them explaining.

But moderation has seen a big improvement from a year or 2 ago when the banhammer was out like crazy LOL.

That does not mean we do not make mistakes.

What are your motives?

The same as his, I suppose.
If he is trolling, then you would be responding to trolling.

Why is this difficult?

We do not have time for a meeting of the flat earth society.

Some don't seems to know what trolling is, even moderation.

Why is this difficult?

If what he is doing is considered acceptable by you, and you have said it is, then my doing the same should also be acceptable - even if you don't like my political views.

Why is this a difficult concept for you?

If what he is doing is considered acceptable by you,

You are confused.

If you want mod staff to delete a post, do not respond to that post. Capice?

Yes, I understand, that was why I didn't respond to it.

--- because you and everybody else who responds to trolling are an enigma.

For the life of me, I can not understand why any sane MLWebber would want me or MH to constantly decide things based on what is acceptable to us, the mod staff.

Why would you want us to define trolling for all of you??

For the umpteenth time: Do not respond to what you perceive to be trolling. Report it, ignore it, move on and do NOT respond it kind.

For the belligerent: Do not respond to whatever you want the moderator to delete.

It is not that difficult.

Why do you guys make this difficult?

I just thought of a great idea!

Please tell me if you have ever encountered this sort of forum feature elsewhere on the web.

We design an algorithm that automates moderation based on member Reports submitted with useful information.

Each post has a Report button which is more elaborate that opens up into a survey. The complainer must enter what the infraction is, his opinion on how severe the infraction is, what he recommends as a mod intervention, what he recommends for a warning, what he recommends for a penalty, duration of supsension, etc. etc. whatever.

Then, based on # of reports and how they all balance out among the complainers, the alleged-troll is sent an automated message. Here are some hypotheticals:

"1 member UNNAMED of the forum has complained about blah blah blah. Please consider this notice in a civil and constructive manner without prejudice."

or

"3 members UNNAMED of the forum have complained about blah blah blah. Please consider this notice in a civil and constructive manner without prejudice."

or

"10 members have complained about this post. All of them recommend that your post be deleted. Your post has been deleted and it is attached at the bottom of this email. Feel free to re-write and re-post."

or

"100 members have complained about 99% of your posts. You have been warned 1000's of times about this same type of infraction. Your posting privileges have been suspended 1 week."

or whatever we want.

We could add more forum facilitators by adding extra weight to the votes of particular members.

Well, first, I didn't respond. Second, you're the one who makes the rules. Third, I don't consider insults to be trolls, though you do. The only reason I report it to you when someone insults me is because of the fear that if I insult him or her back I'll get suspended. Otherwise you'd never hear from me except for spammers.

But clearly, you guys don't much care if people insult others unless it's extremely blatant or the person doing the insulting is conservative.

You have no problem insulting others. What is the problem here?

That still leaves the question of why you take no action, even when I don't respond, but will suspend me if I reply in kind.

-- because there is no action to be taken.

What action do you recommend be taken?

This is not all about you.

Sure, you did not respond. Good. You ignored whatever-you-want-to-be-deleted and so did lots of other folks.

If everybody ignores whatever-they-want-to-be-deleted and moved on, then there is no action that needs to be taken.

Apparently you don't yet understand the role of a moderator. It isn't to sit back like Buddha and nod approvingly when people insult other people, but the subject fails to respond. It's to delete the insulting post and tell the individual who posted it to not do it again. If you fail to do that then people will respond in kind and conversation will deteriorate to back and forth insults. Of course THEN you'll take action, probably suspending everyone, where you could have helped keep the conversation more engaging by taking action earlier.

All you're doing in this back and forth exchange is telling me not to expect you to take any action when someone insults me, which leaves me to respond to them, as I will.

I've taken several breaks from this forum over the years for different reasons, including the moderating.

I really don't understand the purpose of sticking around and complaining incessantly. Seriously, this is not the only political forum out there.

Actually, it pretty much is the only forum.

There are other forums but in comparison they're generally terrible unless echo chambers are your thing. I belong to two other forums where we discuss politics and they fit that description.

I agree with you about not being forced to stay though.

I'm certainly not forced to stay, but I've been here 11 years now. It's become a habit. I like discussing politics. I used to do more of it. Unfortunately, due, in large part, to poor moderating, it's difficult to engage in rational discussion here now since so few people, particularly on the Left, are capable of doing so without engaging in character assassination and insult. A lot of the people who were capable have gone, again, probably because of the childish atmosphere, and been replaced by kooks and political zealots who are allowed to pretty much say whatever they want, poisoning the atmosphere and making it unlikely new people will join who aren't of the same mentality.

When all you read are snarling zealots, you aren't likely to join unless you're a snarling zealot yourself.

I agree with you on the difficulties. It's still probably the best place around, but there are problems.

Yes, that's what makes it frustrating. It could be so much better, and attract a better quality of member if the moderators would just take care of business. But they won't, and they won't take on any more volunteers to help, since no one here, apparently, is up to their high standard.

We'll leave out the frankly quite weird debate about what is or is not a troll. The existing rules are fairly explicit on other subjects. How often do you see the following ignored by moderators?

Do not post inflammatory remarks just to annoy people. If you are not bringing anything new to the argument, then do not say anything at all.

Please respect others using this board by refraining from personal attacks. There is a huge difference between disagreeing with a thought or idea and attacking an individual. We encourage lively debate and intelligent critiques of others viewpoints, not tirades against another poster.

It is okay to criticize a policy, decision, action or comment. Such criticism is part of healthy debate. It is not okay to criticize a person's character or directly insult them, regardless of their position or actions.

The point of this thread is that there is a fear the heavy handed leftist moderation will turn this into an echo chamber.

Charles Anthony is certainly not a leftist, and MH is far from heavy handed.

Let me remind you what you once said to me:

Argus has to be THE most effective poster on this website. If he doesn't make you think and laugh at the same time, your position is probably too unreasonable for an actual discussion.

Sorry, it's hard to take you seriously about echo chambers when you basically said that any position that disagrees Argus is too unreasonable for discussion!
