Alberta has had a major intake of people in that time period and a large increase in population, of course they need more teachers.

Science too hard for you? Try religion!

Yeah, you can't really use this chart without considering population growth and decline.

It's funny that the BCTF sends out these idiotic charts without context with tags saying "The numbers tell the story" - Very amateur!

The number of teachers in other provinces (and how much they make) is completely irrelevant to ANYTHING. They are meaningless numbers. Every province's situation is different.

A question for you; how many student on average are in each classroom and what number should it get down to?

This day and age with so many needy learners, I would say 15.

Thankful to have become a free thinker.

You live in MB where they have class limits up to grade 3. Be thankful you have a government that properly funds and values public education. I hear great things about Manitoba's public school system.

Even when you take the territories out, it's quite a bit more than a couple of hundred bucks compared to the top four. It depends on how the territories are factored into the equation. Because they have so few students. Compared to the provinces, they shouldn't influence a nationwide average that much. Neither should PEI. It would be interesting to see this from an independent. Non political source.

Wilber, for once I agree with you. The exact number when you give weighting to the number of students is $740 less than the national average. Now, two things are interesting about this number. First, as you can see, the always honest BCTF takes $740 and promotes it as $1,000. Now on the radio ads that they are running, they are stating that $740 is over $1,000 difference than the national average. Which leads one to believe that either teachers and their beloved union are inherently stupid or just plain dishonest.

The other thing that is interesting about the fact that BC spends $740 less per student than the national average is when asked how spending more would be of benefit to students, teachers kind of shuffle around uncomfortably and kick some gravel with downcast eyes. But, you may ask, if it was used to reduce class sizes, naturally that would lead to better academic outcomes for students, would it not. Well, the dirty little secret that BC teachers do hot want to discuss is that BC students already top pretty much all of their provincial peers academically. But, it would lead to lower drop out rates without a doubt, you assume. Well, again BC's graduation rates have been on the steady increase all through the tenure of the Liberal government. So, there must be some metric that will show that increased funding will be of benefit to students, because the teachers want more funding and their mantra is always " It is for the students". Well, I have asked this question on many forums, and all I ever get is the above mentioned displacement of gravel in response.

I mean, if it makes sense to you to spend more of the taxpayers money to solve a problem that does not exist, then you and I have differing opinions of what we should expect of a government to whom we entrust our provincial finances.

Wow! are you sure? by my math , and I could be out by a million or 2, but you want to increase the amount of teachers by 40%! That's another 16,000 teaching jobs. OK, so that equals a whopping $1.3 Billion per year (6.4b for a 5 year deal)- just for those new teachers! Add in the raise that the current teachers want and that's another $300m (1.5b for a 5 year deal) add in the $3billion per year that we already pay them (15b for 5 year deal) .

That's a $23 billion dollar deal up from $15b that we currently pay. That's about a 50% increase into schooling! Of course, my math is a little rough.

Oh, let's not forget about benefits.

You know, your posts are just so delusional that I'm starting to think maybe you are a teacher.

Our education system is an absolute joke. The NDP have lit piles of money on fire without any regard for results. Our kids' education has fallen very far behind. But hey, at least the teachers can afford their lake houses and boats and things to enjoy while they have the summers off, and everyone else works their asses off to pay for it.

Manitoba is top notch and from what I hear they putting money to good use by building 21st century classrooms in schools. You don 't know how lucky you have it. Come to BC and see what happens when education is underfunded.

Yeah, we're a regular third world country over here! Why don't you give it a rest. You looked at that money per child graph and decided that Manitoba has it made - that's all you know!

You have no idea what you're talking about, come here and see it for yourself. The system has declined drastically. It USED TO be pretty good but it's gotten progressively worse over the past 15 years.

I have many colleagues in Manitoba. if things were so bad, you would hear about it in the Winnipeg newspapers. I hear crickets. Manitoba is top notch even though it has a high rate of child poverty.

This reveals that you don't know what you're talking about, unfortunately. I suggest getting a proper education so you can afford some of the things you're so bitter about not having. 70 or 80 grand doesn't get you a lake house, etc. so you better aim higher.

In all fairness, I know many teachers with cabins bu the lake. They deserve them too.

You absolutely DO read about it in the local papers, regularly. The education is bottom of the barrel, and getting worse year by year.

In Manitoba, it absolutely does.

It does in most of Canada, other than maybe Southern Ontario and BC.
