I've already explained back on page 1 how kids can be stigmatized and it has nothing to do with that nonsense you just posted.

I already explained how to avoid stigmatizing poor kids.

You don't stop all school events because some may not be able to participate. You find ways that they could participate.

You know what, let's ban Valentine's Day too. No Valentine's to be given out because the fat ugly kids don't get many! No Thanksgiving or Christmas/New Years holidays off either because other cultures don't get ie: Chinese New Years or Hannukah off or whatever. Let's take out "all our sons command" out of Oh Canada because it's not gender neutral. Let's just take a dump on every tradition we know and appeal to every sensitivity humanly possible. RAGE!!!!

Valentines can be given to everyone, or no one, for the reason you mentioned.

People do take whatever religious holidays they need.

The whole anthem is irrelevant nowadays ... but they could start with "Our home on native land".

Hallowe'en is overdone with school costumes and candy, then trickortreating costumes and candy ... ridiculous. Forget the school shindig!

"traditions"? Pretty paltry stuff.

"Rage"? Save it for something important.

While we're at it maybe dog could keep our land glorious and free.

Works for me, but how bout ""WE" keep our land ... ?

Ya that's better!

'Dog' is too busy instigating wars anyway.

That's what I said earlier. I don't even know what we're disagreeing about here.

LOL How in hell did the rest of us survive. This is another PC dumb idea. Time for people to adjust to our way and for us to quit changing everything to accomodate a bunch of people. This is getting pathtic.

Toronto, like a roach motel in the middle of a pretty living room.

Considering it was our Principals who mandated it, and none of them were the complainers......pretty much a moot post. Consistent and hardly surprising I suppose.

Fine by me !

The point was it has been changed, numerous times, but changing it now is paramount to an attack on CDN values.

How about all our comms command

or all our seats command

or all our gods command

or

"without any command"

there is that whole power trip aspect that can be put to sleep.. it is so pretentious to actually say "please stand" come on you have to ask...

lots of people equate this as a staple but much like god save the queen, it is cult practice and a sorry nationalistic travesty it is one of those attempts to forge a nation by cult practice.

I think 2 minutes of thanking people around you would be more of a team building enterprise. can you beleive people wern't even allowed education unless they took part in this cult practice. it is horrendous.

the cult must end and rationality be returned.. for society not the cult.

it is one of them absurd things that should be left to fancy not politics or the law.

they did away with god save the queen and the maple leaf forever.. oh canada is in that same boat of .. you kept people from school over this thing. it is horrible.

Lets stop worshiping flags and songs, and start spending time thinking about respecting other humans.

I have this sense people feel naked without cult practice... universals are a way to go then this sort of nonsense can be put to sleep.

who cares sing whatever words you want. its not a criminal offence.

O morning song

I would prefer yoga

stretch and stretch for

flexibility

etc..

Isn't multiculturalism supposed to embrace diversity? By making Halloween a "more inclusive Spirit Day," seems to me it's doing the exact opposite.

You did see the quote in the OP from the catholic who opposes Halloween based on its pagan roots? This issue is not about multiculturalism.

If it was Scarborough, maybe, but not Port Colborne. It's a small town with next to zero percent visible minorities. (Yes I've been to port colborne... It's a farm town with strong catholic roots).

It's kind of the worst thing that any humans could be doing at this time in human history. Other than that, it's fine." Bill Nye on Alberta Oil Sands

The OP and the news article sited aren't exclusively about Port Colborne, but the quote I was responding to about the "more inclusive Spirit Day" is regarding Port Colborne, which certainly suggests it is about "multiculturalism" since Halloween wasn't simply cancelled, but replaced with a "more inclusive" celebration.

I dunno....maybe because of the link to satan/withccraft?

It was another Pagan ritual if I recall correctly. Nothing to do with Satan/witchcraft. Not sure if I call if a custom because it has no real connection anymore to the original concept.

On the upside, my wife and I indulge in a feast of horror movies, good, bad and ugly, at this time every year. Stay tuned for Bleeding Heart's insightful horror movies reviews on the Arts and Culture thread!

“There is a limit to how much we can constantly say no to the political masters in Washington. All we had was Afghanistan to wave. On every other file we were offside. Eventually we came onside on Haiti, so we got another arrow in our quiver."

My daughters and I always ended trick-or-treating at my sister's house where we watched 'classic' Halloween horror movies. I'm not a horror movie fan by any means, yet it was always a good time on Halloween.

Halloween, to this day, remains my older daughter's favorite holiday; she still anticipates it like a little kid.

Talk about stigmatizing kids!

http://www.ctvnews.ca/canada/toronto-school-bans-junk-food-from-students-lunch-bags-1.1500394

A Toronto elementary school is trying to encourage its students to live a healthy lifestyle by clamping down on the contents of their lunch bags.

James S. Bell Middle School, located in the city’s southwest end, has implemented a food policy that bans students from eating chocolate, candy and pop while at school. Instead, students are asked to bring only fresh, healthy foods in their packed lunches.

There are some exceptions around the holidays, and food items like potato chips and granola bars are allowed, but not as an everyday snack.

Is that an non-approved snack in your lunch bag? SHAME!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Certain parents, I'm pretty sure it wasn't a consensus. Likely the same type of parents that would also think canceling Halloween is a good idea.
